I think RA is a special case here. First they had a leadership of friends that wanted to go on of course and then they had hundreds of members, who probably couldn't imagine to play anywhere else than in Red Alliance, because there was no real alternative for them.
But from what I've seen, almost no alliance is safe from breaking up, when they are being defeated and losing all their territory. If you have a long war like a pos war, invest a lot of time and effort and it ends with a total defeat anyway, then the morale is down and noone is really in the mood to invest further work, because they think it will be also for nothing. People just don't want anymore at that point, they have enough of the chain of failures. They want to have fun again. So the alliance disbands in the hope that whatever comes next will be better.
Well, take FLA as a good example here (Grim being in FLA). They were the butt of every "carebear" joke going, were told that they were surviving off of D2's back (like a "pet", it was often said) and in other words had a reputation similar to that of Xelas. However, when war broke out, they were on the front lines (in Fountain, miles away from their homes), when YW flipped side, FLA launched a full invasion of YW space (ultimately it was repelled, but FLA put up a darned decent show of it). And when IRON bailed out and D2 crumbled away in to nothingness, FLA stuck in their home and fought BoB's Alliance to the bitter end (look at the map, they were one of the last northerners to fall, aside from the ones that are still around at this moment).
And now, despite having been evicted from it's former 0.0 home in it's entirety, FLA still retains a healthy 500+ member count and is presumably pursuing other avenues.
Xelas- similar reputation before the war, didn't fight particularly well during the war, and have now simply stopped being an alliance at the very hint of having to defend their home from BoB.
It wasn't simply a given that everyone would have reacted that way- thats all Xelas. --------
