OK, my XP PC has suddenly developed a fairly strange bug. About 1/3rd of the time when I left click with my mouse, it registers as a double click.
I've tried updating the drivers and changing the sensitivity settings, but it hasn't made any difference. I'm pretty sure it's not a physical problem with the mouse either. Since I've never had a problem like this before, I'm a bit clueless as where to even start. Any ideas? --------

Try this.
Start->Control Panel->Printers and Other Hardware->Mouse.
Under the Button's tab, move the double click slider to the right to increase the speed at which I need to double click.
Are you using a laptop?

Have you got a spare mouse you can try?
I also had this problem and changing mouse fixed it.

Hmmm, I'll give it a go. I think I have an identical one (but newer) somewhere around here. I'll dig it out. --------

Edited by: defiler on 19/06/2007 15:38:47 Might still be a hardware problem... They wear out, you know... Buttons always tend to flicker a bit when you press them which the hardware might interpret as well over 10 clicks before the signal goes stable. This is easily remedied by simply limiting how often the button is allowed to change state, 1ms ought to be enough without limiting usability in the slightest, but this might change if the components make poor contact.
But I digress.
If it is a hardware problem you'll likely see strange behaviour when releasing the button as well. Say, hold down the button to drag something or whatever and release, does that sometimes register as release+single click? If so - definitely a hardware glitch...
edit: duh, also try press+hold ofc (I'm not entirely awake yet). 'Twould be interesting to know if these two actions I've mentioned are also affected or if it's just normal clicks...

I've had this happen. It happens only with your left click right? You need a new mouse, the little switch under the left mouse button is wearing out. I recommend a Logitech 518 or G5.

Seems like it were a hardware problem. It's been temporarily usurped with a cheap mouse I had in a draw, until I can buy a decent replacement.
Might take the opportunity to by a Logitech G5. Had my eye on that for a while. Any other good mouse recommendations? --------
