Edited by: Karlemgne on 20/06/2007 15:00:06 I know that many of the pirates in the eve-verse are smart, articulate people. I've flown with quite a few of them, however we seem to be as of late, attracting the crude, not so bright pilots to our ranks.
Recently, I won't name names here, I've encoutered a number of pirates who like to smack talk upon entering local. What-the-hell, who does that? I mean I suppose if you are going to specifically fight another corp, and you know you're set to negative, so your opponent will see in local as soon as you jump in, you can smack--though smack talk is childish. Having said that, these pirates DO NOT just smack somebody they're at war with, no... they jump into a system filled with carebears and announce in local, "ALRIGHT, WHICH ONE OF YOU NEWBS WANTS TO DIE FIRST?"
At which point, they get drawn into a smacking match with half of the carebear filled local. You know, I always hate it when someone I kill announces my presence in local, or tells their friends in the next system I'm camping a gate, but this nameless pirate does that themselves. Very strange, and I have a really difficult time understanding why someone needs to talk smack SOOO bad, that they are willing to give themselves up immediately whenever they enter local.
Then you have the attention grabbing forum warriors like Klepto. Fine, these guys have a lot of players in their corp, and spend their days sitting on a gate. How come I have to hear them brag about themselves twice a week on the forums?
And what's with the guy who posted a video of himself dishonoring a ransom?
I've only been playing this game a year, and have been a pirate the whole time, but I've never, ever seen the calibur of pirate reach as low as it is today.

Question. Is, Entering - and just before jumping through; Writing " c 0c k? "(take a guess) in local considered smack, or just a question asking if there is a specific item around?

The fun life of piracy has attracted a lot of new ppl in the last 6 months or so and the numbers of pirates seem to be higher than ever. There are a lot more noobie 6 month old pirate small corps about and these are usually the type of ppl you find doing the kinda things you're talking. The well established pirate corps still hold true to their ways of old.

I have been 'pirating / ganking / killing' for almost 3 years... and still love every second of it.
- I like to smack in local
- I like to provoke debate on forums
- I am not modest about my ganking abilitys
- I am honest
- I still enjoy popping a shuttle (with a carrier is even better)
- I speak my mind without fear of what others think
- I don't go out of my way to further the legend that is 'tiller / klepto'
You say Klepto are just some 'forum pirates'.. sure we're here in force. Guess why ?, yup, there is almost 150 active members. Thats 150 guys in game 'shooting' up the place and generally upseting alot of people.
Of course your jealous and feel left out, hence mentioning us.. I understand though, I would be too.
Piracy is alot more common now days as more people get bored with the other content in the game. Either that or the population is so much larger ...which ever, I still love it!

once when I was still using my first toon I jumped into a system and said jokingly something like "okay folks, I'm here for your ISKies - just have them ready for me as I come to your asteroid belt." I was kidding, but I see your point here.
I used to be 100% opposed to smacking in local in general, but I see the tactical value of it at times. These pirates you speak of, however, are not doing it right :P --

Quote: - I like to smack in local
Alright, you like to smack. Fine, but can I ask you, if you are hunting with 3 other corp mates, and you jump into a system with around 20 people, do you instantly type in local "ALRIGHT NEWBS AND STATION HUGGERS, I AM HERE TO KILL YOU! WHO WANTS TO DIE FIRST?"
Better yet, if you're camping a gate, do you jump into the ajoining system and tell everyone, "Klepto is now camping the other side of this gate, newbs!"
No, because you're smarter than that.
Quote: - I like to provoke debate on forums
You call it debate, I call it e-peen stroking.
Quote: - I am not modest about my ganking abilitys
Certainly you aren't. To quote you, "I still enjoy popping a shuttle (with a carrier is even better) ."
Quote: - I am honest
I'll give you that, you don't lie about logging to save your implants.
Quote: - I don't go out of my way to further the legend that is 'tiller / klepto'
Yeah, and I suppose you slipt and fell, and accidentally put two to three threads a week in C&P regarding the uberness of Klepto.
Quote: You say Klepto are just some 'forum pirates'.. sure we're here in force.
Read it again, what I said was Klepto has a lot of members, and likes to camp gates. I suggested I don't need to hear about that from you 3 times a week on the forums.
Quote: Of course your jealous and feel left out, hence mentioning us.. I understand though, I would be too.
I mention you because of your ridiculousness, Ginger, ehhh, I mean Tiller.
Quote: Piracy is alot more common now days as more people get bored with the other content in the game. Either that or the population is so much larger ...which ever, I still love it!
Me too. I just see a lot of BAD or Braggart pirates these days.
Quote: I wish you would remember the above when you go on anti Klepto / Tiller crusades as usual. Maybe, just maybe I know what I'm doing (3 yrs in game) and you are in fact, technically speaking, THE NOOB
I never called anyone a "NOOB." In fact, I refrain from trying to claim superiority because I started playing the game 6 months before someone else. What I am saying is in the year I've been a pirate, the calibur of pirates has gone down, significantly.

You are right in that in the last 3+ years things have changed and solo play has largely been stamped out (thanks CCP for HP changes, you are great) forcing people to blob up...
The forced blobs then tend to be lower skilled and younger players who still perform well in groups but would be squashed solo....

It is unfortunate that this happens a lot of the time. There are still people out there who remain smack-free though. There's nothing wrong with some banter but there's a clear defenition between that and smack. A lot of people still need to realise that this internet spaceship game is just that, a game and as such does not need to be taken seriously to the extent of poisoning local with your bitter frustration and often incapability of taking you on.

First of all, I never claimed that either myself, or my corp never engaged in smack talk. I do think its rather childish, BUT, the example I used was someone jumping into a system, and instantly starting to smack.
In fact, if you bothered to actually read my post, I said even that action (jumping into local and smacking) could have a place, but when pirates who are hunting jump in and announce their presence to a myriad of targets just because they can't restrain themselves from calling everyone a newb, you have bad piracy.
Lastly, I'll say to you:

They haven't made anyone do anything. But with recent game mechanic changes (HP Boost across the board for example) it encourages people to adapt to a new play style, i.e. blobbing up.
Battles last way too long in 1v1 situations due to new game mechanics, so people have time to call in their friends for support, 3-6 jumps away. Rather than risk having this happen, people have started to fly around in larger gangs.

I have no problem with people smack talking in local. As a rule, I don't. I won't tell you good fight or anything either though. That doesn't mean I won't chat in local, or with a victem or whatever. I've seen some good smack, and i've seen some terrible smack. If your smacking just because you think its cool, stay home, log off tbh. But if there is some purpose to it, to bait someone into a fight or to distract them or something, sure, can see its value.
