Can I do level 3 missions in a cruiser? Or do I need to have a Battle Ship to stand a chance of succeeding in a level 3 mission?

Yeah you can do them in a cruiser.
Only sometimes you have to watch the combat missions, since they send you straight into 50k enemies. But those are rare. You can choose the corp you work for. If you are not into combat, try a mining corp.
I also advise you to install a Probe frigate at the agents station too. The probe is fast, and has 500+ cargo. That's what you need for the level 3 transport missions.

You can do most missions easily in a cruiser.
The merc missions are harder, 1x 20k & 2x 35k. (I think... correct me if I'm wrong)
If you work for an internal security division, you will probably want one of the best cruisers, and equip it well.

Ive been able to do every kill mission thrown at me in a kestrel with cruise missiles
Including one with 2x 35k rats ("Stop the thief"), and I got out unscratched.

Just be carefull of the slaveunerlord, a 65k curiser that can hit you at 55km, and keeps trying past 60km.

Centurion (arch angel) is at 75k and can easily be taken down in a combat-fitted rupture. Doing these missions in a battleship don't really give you anything, just point-lock-fire and they're dead in the first round of fire...
...and with the light all life vanished... |

And people wonder why cruise missiles on a frig are unbalanced.
in answer to the original question, kill missions are all doable in a cruiser, albeit some are challenging, the 65k and 75k rats tend to give you a good fight.

It takes a lot longer to learn to shoot cruise missiles than it does to learn to fly a cruiser. I think the cruiser requirements are unbalanced ;)
Either way. Yes, kestrel or rifter with cruises works if you're sufficently skilled. Actually, you can do most with just a lot of heavy missiles without too much effort. Otherwise, stick with a cruiser. A cruiser gives you more options too when it comes time to schleep 1100 m3 of seeds around or haul a ton of loot back after your slaughterfest. I suggest an Omen, Vexor, or Stabber

TomB: End the speed-race. 1 propulsion mod allowed, make turrets affect ship attributes like +speed/+ab speed +agil for progressivly smaller/lighter turrets, -speed/-ab speed -agil for long-range. |

I use heavy targetted missles right now and those do crazy damage. I can't wait until they nerf the missles. I saw what cruise missles do but I won't use 'em. (Mainly because I don't feel like training the skill. I want to put a microwarp drive in my stabber, eheheheh.)

My Moa has been more than enough. With the slave lord I did have to warp and recharge shields and return after taking out his escort.
