Hey, guys, I am completely new to exploration, and I'm wondering how its changed since the patch.
Mainly I ask because today some mates and I decided to try out exploration for the first time.
After reading both versions of the guide, we thought we were good to go. We dropped a multi-frequency probe in a system near our home, and bamo! An unknown deadspace signal.
After about an hour of hunting, and about 500k in probes later we found our exploration site. A site that I could have found from a planet with my on-board scanner. :-/
I was wondering if there was any possible way to tell from the outset if I'm going to be spending isk on something I can find for free. I.E. is there anything that can't be found with that little on-board scanner?
Anyway, I'm a bit frustrated, hopefully someone here has some info for me.

Well, that kinda sounds funny :) Patch notes specifically said that onboard scanner is the basic tool for exploration. If you've already found something with multifrequency probe, why not try sniffing around the system with onboard scanner?
If you chose expensive probe-way, that looks like your problem, not EVE's.

Unknown Deadspace Signatures have the same chance to be found by ladar, radar, gravimetric or magnetometric probes. They are normaly found by the first scanning atempt with probes, and should be easily found by the onboardscanner too. Furthermore the unknown Deadspace Signatures are only worth doing for beginners.
So whenever you find an unknown Signature you basicly know its crap. When you finde a race specific Signature, you won't know until you have found it and see it signal strength. ------- http://www.stillbruch.ch |

Thanks for confirming what I suspected. Newbie plexes are polluting the Unknown results.
With everyone in Xelas gone from Fountain and the place more or less empty, I took one last swing through to do a Radar plex before I left.
15 systems in a row, ALL with Unknown hits, before I had to leave to go join a gang.
I know most people didn't bother with Unknowns, so there was a lot around, but 15 hits in a row is unprecedented for me.
So while I didn't really got for Unknowns before, I'm most certainly not touching them with a 10 foot barge pole now.
And I was getting tempted there to try a few and maybe trigger some officers in an expedition.

The onboard scanner is not the basic tool for exploration. It is as you know fitted to any ship and is used to find sites called encounters that are pretty much heavy rat spawns. In refrence to the expensive probe way its for finding other signal types other than unknown and (although i havent actualy found one yet but i assume they are still there) better than average unknown sites. While technically you can find these exploration sites with the onboard scanner its like getting 0m result from a gravimetric quest probe with on a radar site with a sig streangth of 0.025. Not very likely. So the probe ways is still they way to go.
