Hello !
Heard of this game for years but never gave it a try, decided recently to see what it's all about. So far it's very interesting and seems incredibly deep, which is a refreshing change.
The other night I figured out that you can check the market for prices on ships from anywhere, then fly over and pick it up. Found a very low priced Condor and it was only a couple hops from my location, so I went over. The area was 0.4, which I'm aware is dangerous, but I thought I could just get the ship and come right back. Flew there without a problem, picked up the ship, and exited the station to head home. When I came out, there were a number of ships around, some of them were pulsing and such, within about 5 seconds rockets and lasers started hitting me, and after two hits the ship was annhilated.
Granted it was a Condor, and later even got one for free from a mission, was kind of a bummer to get destroyed like that. I've played PVP MMOs before, so it's not a new concept, but it still kind of surprised me. Usually the higher level players don't bother picking on people who are obviously total newbs, unless it's just griefing.
Is this typical of EVE ? Do people just go after anyone and everyone, even when it's totally obvious they've been playing for a day ? If anything it was educational about what can be expected, as often you only learn those lessons the hard way. |

Welcome to EVE. That behavior is driven by alliance killboards and just plain grief lovers. Pirates inhabit most systems below 0.5 status and well they kill you just for the fun of it. A condor is a cheap ship to learn the lesson from. Soon as you exit a station in 0.4 or less and see others try to warp to an object straight ahead of you. A condor should warp fairly quickly. In all likely hood they wont waste a lot of time chasing you. Vice Admiral Universal Agencies |

Going below 0.5 space and you've just signed the "Death waiver"
Yes it's harsh, but thats the breaks in this game, you go low sec, you take a chane , You make a profit/You Lose your ship
and welcome to Eve :) _______________________________________________

Next to killboard monkeys that just camp n' gank everything they can comfortably overpower all day long, there are also just cautious players, as a "noob' character migh as well be a spy, my guess is that about half of the npccorpers are alts of experienced players.
Lesson is, dont go to lowsec unless you know how to stay out of trouble, or ae prepared to learn the hard way.

Edited by: Hannobaal on 22/06/2007 19:47:37 If you undock in low-sec in a frigate (and a light one at that), there are ships outside and it takes you more than 2 seconds to warp off, you're pretty much asking to be killed.
A Condor would be out of there so fast, very few things would actually have time to lock you. Why did you wait for 5 seconds? ------------------ "If you ever need anything please don't Hesitate to ask someone else first." |

Well, I've been playing the game for a day, and it's really confusing ! Still getting used to the interface and the game in general, I was actually kind of thrilled to see a whole bunch of big ships flying around me. At least until alarms started going off and it became clear they were locking on to me. I was actually right clicking to jump to the gate when they started hitting me.
Lesson learned, and as others have pointed out, it was a low cost lesson, so no biggie. It's clear what is to be expected now and what is necessary to make sure you don't get caught in lowsec areas. All the tips and advice are appreciated !
That's what's tough about this game, there's so much to figure out, you either have to find someone to explain or figure it out after you're ship is rubble. I've read through some of the guides, but as with all MMOs, experience is the best teacher.

QFT. A few weeks ago went down into syndicate, to help a friend, while warping at a gate a myrmidon locked me down, pulled out his tech 2 ogres and fried my Vexor. I thought he was quite newbish, but everyone of course told me that I could "possibly" be an alt-spy trying to infiltrate something or another. Even though I was in territory owned by no one, bothering no one. I think the chances he killed me just for the heck of it, is alot higher than him suspecting me of infiltrating territory owned by no one. (Thats like randomly punching some guy in the crowd, because there's a minute chance the guy who was your childhood bully is actually close by) Ah well, hoped he made good use of my medium armor repair I, hammerhead I's, and not to mention the 125mm railgun I's.

Well like I said, I've played PVP MMOs and I know how it works, and sure, high levels kill low levels. Now to me, it's pointless, when the tables are reversed I usually just wave Hi or do a silly emote, it just doesn't thrill me. But I realize it happens. I guess since this game seemed to cater to a more "in-depth" crowd, people would be busier hunting lucrative targets instead of wiping out lowbies. Then again, as you said Splagada, I shouldn't be surprised.
I thought the real danger was out in 0.0, didn't realize that even 0.4 can be lethal !

No one has specified this yet, but a very important rule in eve is to never purchase or fly what you can't afford to lose - undocking anywhere can possibly lead to your ship (and pods) destruction, so do so with the understanding that whatever you're flying is eventually going to die a fiery death. I've learned this and it makes my life in EVE alot better, hehe.
Another good tip is to always pay attention to everything that's going around you. Think if it like taking a stroll to a grocery store in a really bad part of town - you need to watch your back constantly, or bring along friends who can. This is a perfectly viable strategy in eve too.
If you want any more advice, just ask.

Low sec can be even more dangerous, because thats where everybody from empire space goes when they want something to shoot at and dont want to get trapped in a 0.0 gate camp.
About the griefing part... well, people play games for fun. Some people enjoy killing other players. Its just the way it is. They pay for the game to enjoy it, so they do.
Doesnt have anything to do with being a coward in my opinion. Its just a game, and people want to have fun.

Oh I know and expected it, and it doesn't anger me. Just pointing out that the above poster was right in stating that EVE Online is one of those games where griefing is considered reap pvp. I frankly don't see the difference between the above "pvper" and one of those lvl 70 rogues in WoW sitting on your lvl 22 corpse. =)) Different games, same mindset. =P

Again then, define "griefing".
Eve is not a dueling game where two characters of relatively equal skill get together and slug it out. It's not meant to be. If it was, most of the game world and features would be rather pointless and could be done away with without the game losing anything. ------------------ "If you ever need anything please don't Hesitate to ask someone else first." |

welcome to eve.
Dont let it put u off, few months and you could be the one ganking people in low sec
pvp is the best bit about eve and the freedom to kill or be killed pretty much anywhere(although in high sec u have a high level of protection)is what seperated this from other lame halfassed games. By all means mine or do industry but eve is a pvp game. Embrace it and u will get the most from it. --------------------------------------------------------------

the biggest scam from CCP is this, because 0.0 is far safer than anywhere else. depends on the time but if youre careful and able to be on your own (its fast), with a bit of socializing youll be all safe in 0.0 reallly fast
personally im scared in 0.4 and Jita. not in 0.0 ------

I define griefing, as the act of killing a player for no other reason than "You can." Knowing that he can't put up any method of a fight, and is perpetually screwed. You may waste more ISK in the form of ammo killing the guy, than you would gather from the wreck, but ah well. What I find interesting is the plethora of excuses that are put up in defense of the said act. I just wish people would be more truthful, and actually say why they're doing it instead, of the .00000000000001% chance I'm carrying a BPO, or am an alt spy seeking some type of malicious activity against the corporation or alliance.

One thing you need to know. Just about every ship is useful for players at different skill levels. My main is a battleship specialized character with nearly 25 million skill points and I fly a condor in low-sec quite a bit. ItĘs cheap, fast, and it can do a good job carrying valuable datacores I get from low sec research agents.
One other use for the condor is as a tackler. A condor, or other frigate, can stop someone from warping away (warp scramblers) while the big ships to warp in for the kill.
Point is that the guys who shot you had no real way to know that you were a total newbie. They probably thought you were either a pirate scout or were hauling valuable cargo. You also might have been making bookmarks in the system so you could come back later in a sniper ship to kill other people.
Mining companies have to protect their low-sec space somehow and they often do it by shooting strangers first and asking questions later.
Whatever the case, the people in low sec had an actual reason to kill you. It wasnĘt just grief. Welcome to Eve.

you don't know what someone is carrying. The best way to find out is to pop it. I've seen faction mods come off the ferox of a 3 month old player. I know someone who got 2 slave set implants from popping a condor that were worth 400mil. So your belief that this is an excuse comes from your own lack of knowledge.

People often create alt characters in the remaining 2 slots to spy, scout and transport stuff around when their main corp is at war, amongst other things. Chances are you were shot to see if you were carrying anything interesting as you'd be suprised how many expensive skillbooks and bpo's are transported this way.
You were just in the wrong place at the wrong time i'm afraid but don't let it put you off. Get yourself into a good player corp asap. I recomend Eve University unless you already have friends in eve.
There's a big, (and depending on which side of the guns you're on) bad world waiting out there. See you in space

I do know that there is that minute chance, which was posted in probably somewhat exaggerated form above. (Which you somehow forgot to quote) I'm going to go out on a limb here, and say there's an extremely higher chance you're just screwing over a new guy. Thats all. =)

I agree that is probably true but what should you do, only kill .00000000000001% of the people you see and hope that is the one that is carrying the bpo?

Fine, then most of Eve combat (especially in 0.0, but otherwise as well) is "griefing", but if so it's a kind of "griefing" that I, for one, have no problem with. If you think about the game world as actually being real (which it should feel like it, if it's a good RPG, even if it deals with sci-fi aspects that we know are pretty much impossible), and you were flying through a lawless area like the Syndicate, would you not risk being attacked by the locals just for being there? Of course you would, and no other reason is needed. It's no different than when the rats attack you. ------------------ "If you ever need anything please don't Hesitate to ask someone else first." |

First of all Zadnak welcome to EVE. As the rest told you this is a harsh world designed to put you on your toes most of the time and require both effort and thought if you want to proceed in your career here.
Secondly i would like to point out that you should be aware of the game mechanics, if you are willing to travel anywhere in EVE. Wars, timers possible ways to avoid annihilation etc etc.
At your unfortunate instance you should know that when you undock for about 30 sec you are invulnerable and no one can target you or shoot at you. (unless they have smartbombs or you decide to move your ship). At your situation the second you saw the flashing guys you should do 2 things. First look for a warpable object that is straight ahead of your ship direction. Secondly if you could not find that, click on station and dock. The first try to dock most probably would tell you that you have x seconds to be allowed to dock again. Try again after x seconds pass.
Yes you would be confined within the station, but patience would be a key to success there. It would be very rare that they would be so desperate to shoot a condor with a new guy so much to bother waiting for you to undock.
Also as someone said don't fly what you can't afford to lose and that includes cargo. Be always on your toes and with an open eye for suspicious moves towards you (even in Empire yes).
------- Nobody can be exactly like me. Even I have trouble doing it. |
