As far as I know, all of EVE's game data is stored on the computer and the server only manages the net between the PCs, right? So, why not have a multi-console network for EVE Online? Of course there would be control problems, because EVE is originally a mouse based game. But we could use joysticks to control the cursor or have a grid based UI. And also most of the consoles can be connected to the internet, such as PS2 or PSP, especially next-gen consoles for instance PS3. (Yes, I like PlayStation. ;) I know CCP is not planning even a Mac release, so I am just thinking about the (maybe not so) distant future. I'm just trying to survive both the real and the fictional world. Although, the real world is much tougher. |

I do like the idea of having a specialised console for a game. I've always thought that if a game was to developer there own console (Optional of course) That you can hook up to your TV and Wireless (Or Wired) internet specialised at running JUST that game. It could be marketed at existing players or new players.
Problems:
- Graphics; Will greatly increase the cost as it will require a higher graphics than is currently in consoles on the market today.
- Upgradeable; Hard to upgrade, it might as well just be a special computer not a console.
- Input devices; If you keep it just a keyboard and mouse (Wired or not) it will feel just like a computer.
- Development; Creating such a console would be extremely expensive and it would and should not be made a needed component to play
Making a version for consoles available now is not possible (And a waste of money). It's a great idea and would be a first. It just has issues that make it not possible. (Would involve coding there own OS). Love the idea and if anyone thinks of any ideas of way to get around the problems I see with it, post it!
Nice idea.. I just can't see it working

Consoles can't deal with too much text, television is just not geared towards displaying it. Once HD tv's are more common we might see MMO's popping over to consoles.
Still, it would probably need a keyboard/mouse (not a problem with the USB ports these days) so it would be just like a pc.

I can see an EVE flight simulator on a console, that would rock, I love flight simulators, and this kinda just nics the surface of one, so its good to me. The idea of having this game on console, is like having an RTS on a console, the controls would....well suck. But an EVE flight sim like SW: Rogue Squadron type thing, but with fleet battles and control over large ships, one word: leet.

Edited by: Dargas Tornel on 23/06/2007 10:42:56 The graphics don't need to be very good. Take the PSP for example. The UI could be grid based, the ships and other stuff could consist of a little bit less poligons. It would just look like that you put in the UMD, turn on the WLAN switch on the side of the PSP, and stay close to a WLAN source.
Oh, and I see you misunderstood me... Sorry. I meant that EVE could be sold on other, already existing platforms, not a specific EVE console. And the updates can be managed, they could be downloaded to the memory cards of the console, and the game data could be constucted to use these extra files. I'm just trying to survive both the real and the fictional world. Although, the real world is much tougher. |

No. MMO's should never ever EVER be put on consoles, NEVER!
Mainly cause it'd take much more programming that could be better spent reducing lag or ner...errr boosting Amarr or working on the future graphics update..
and Secondly because Consoles suck. ---------- -Rilder Visit my blog =) http://rilderslog.blogspot.com/ |

For the love of... Why can't people have a discussion normally? Some think consoles suck, some think not. But this is not the topic for argueing about that! I'm just trying to survive both the real and the fictional world. Although, the real world is much tougher. |

Its not worth the effort for CCP.
Whats the point of porting for 360 and PS3 which are PowerPC and CELL chips respectively as opposed to x86/x64 architectures which potentially means a hell of alot of work depending on how portable their code is for little gain?
Or they could carry on devoting programming resources to the platform they already have which is already maturely established, roll out patches and generally not have to care if their upgrades are gonna screw up on a console.
Plus PS3 is a big no no - EVE uses DirectX, PS3 uses OpenGL iirc. PSP doesnt have the processing power.
So that means writing a new graphics engine, the sound engine is portable sure enough though.

EvE's a good IP, and more should be done with it (CCGs blow harder than consoles), but the game itself is not suited to porting to consoles. I totally different video game, on the Xbox or something, with shooting and a story and exotic dancers and cameos from famous player characters in the EvE universe (perhaps the hero is captured as an infant and raised by Veto before returning to claim his birthright as the King of the ancient Fountain Alliance) could be a really fun spin-off.
