I think you've missed something - the name of the text. It's a "bio", i.e. a biography, i.e. a text that serves to relate to someone a "list of personal deeds", among other things. It's not meant to function as an introductory conversation.

The reason for this was most likely part of the "Need for Speed" initiative. If a bio of 32k is seriously causing lag, then CCP, your code sucks, it's not the bio length. Most people don't have long bios, they usually have something really lame like "My pewpew pewpew'd PepeLePew for whogivesaratsass." So cutting the bio length didn't have anything to do with how much data that people were actually using, it was some dev's ill-advised attempt at reducing database load.
I spent alot of time writing what I think is a cool bio that inserts my character into EvE lore in some way. It doesn't mean that other players will read it and like it, but at least I get to use my writing skills to differentiate my character, which is fun.
Besides, arbitrarily cutting the size of the bio without a warning is lame lame lame.
_geek talk alert_ The bio supports characters of multiple languages, so it's some variant of UCS, but say the bio field in the database is something relatively small like 32k, using a 16-bit character set that comes out to 16384 (32x1024x8/16) uncompressed characters. Store the bio in compressed form, and uncompress it client side. Simple enough to have a decent sized bio. And in Jita with 600 players, you could load everyone's bio simultaneously and it would only be 9.375 MB (16384x600/1024/1024) of memory. And if you load it on demand, then on the client side it'll only take up as much as however many show info windows the client has loaded. Negligible demand. Need for Speed? More like, need for devs to fix things that didn't need fixing. Look for speed improvements elsewhere guys. Leave my bio alone.
...Of course, I have no idea what your database or code looks like, nor the results of your performance evaluations, so this whole post is just speculation predicated on the belief that my meticulously crafted bio was slashed in the name of performance enhancements, and is therefore in the eyes of the reader either hot air or BS (depending on how charitable the reader is.)
Thanks CCP. I wouldn't moan and groan if I didn't care.

It may have been mentioned already, but the majority of those c&p damage type bios I see are wrong or misleading anyway.
For a quick incoming damage summary, look here: http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=385114
But if you want specific accuracy for both incoming damage and optimal damage type, use an NPC resource like http://eve.grismar.net/rats/index.php

1. Go to your base EVE directory. Start the logserver.exe program. 2. In Logserver: File->New Workspace.
Now, start the main EVE program. You will note that logserver starts filling up with lots of debug info.
3. Log in, go to character. Go to your character sheet, go to your bio. Go back out. Go back to your bio, try to add information. Try to delete some information. Add more information than will now fit (so that it truncates as you describe in the bugreport). 4. Close EVE.
5. Back in Logserver: File->Save Workspace As... (save in findable location with good name). 6. When filing bugreport, attach the created .lbw file.

I'm really happy about the bio changes, and I'm a hardcore roleplayer in the game. Having a lengthy bio actually damages roleplay, it doesn't enhance it. Because if you've got your whole backstory in there (as many roleplayers do), why WOULD someone else know all that stuff without having spoken to your character first? It's meta-knowledge for the most part and is lazy roleplay to just grab all that info from someone's bio rather than have a conversation with them or something to find out the info (or in other words, you know, ROLEPLAY...). By having so much info in there you've actually squandered what could have been a really good roleplay opportunity for someone. For a roleplayer a bio doesn't have to be very much, in fact the less the better... a short professional or personal statement, or some quick lookup stats will do. You don't need everything that happened to your character since she or he was 6 in there...
And for the non-roleplayers, most of them just used their bio for stupid stuff (ASCII beer trucks, etc) or things like damage and resistance tables (which it makes no sense to share with everyone including your enemies ffs - keep that sort of stuff in your sticky notes, not your bio!), or even worse, lame showing off (supposed 'witty' conversations that are always immature and stupid, or "I perfectly wrecked fsdfdsf for 6 million points of damage", things like that) - in other words they wasted the space with crap. No wonder CCP cut most of the length out of the bio, they're probably trying to save storage...

Having a lengthy bio actually damages roleplay, it doesn't enhance it.ö I am also a hardcore roleplayer in game and I strongly disagree it hurts role-playing big time, perhaps not all roleplayers but some. There are many facts you would work out about a person upon meeting them but due to it being a game those facts donÆt transfer over.
A drone or sidekick following you about, a slight limp in your walk. A bunch of body guards and many other things. Those are all details that belong in the bio. It something someone would notice right away when they met you but cannot tell in a static photo. Things like height, weight, long flowing hair, what your wearing are other things that are useful in a bio.
When your in one of the in game bars you donÆt want to be describing your self to every body who walks in. The bio saves you repeating the same facts every 2 minuets.
Think of MSN or other fourms most people have profiles on them. A bunch of pilots in a VR channel remote talking to each other would have a profile just like people in real life chatting on Msm.
I do agree a lot of people use the bio for the wrong thing.

That's actually pretty much what I meant, we don't really disagree.
The bio is definitely useful for RP when it's done right, but the point is that you can describe that you've got a limp, a few bodyguards, a lip that curls up and long waving hair plus a half dozen other things in a concise paragraph or two. You don't need a whole essay for that. If you're just describing character features (i.e what would be seen by an observer but not obvious from a static photo) and STILL exceeding the maximum limit of the bio, that's a good sign that you're probably going over the top with needless flowery descriptions that no-one is going to want to plough through anyway, and some careful editing probably wouldn't hurt your 'readability'...

Or you know, use it like it appears as whatever public information you want to leave in your public file. Because you know, pod pilots, space, having a limp is hardly something you'd expect others to infer.

Edited by: Tassill on 25/06/2007 12:31:17 I spent hours doing a realy great ASCII art of the Australian Boxing kangaroo flag in my bio. Only to find that when i clicked finished it choped of half the text.
Ahh but you ask how did i draw it without hitting the character limit.
It seems to me that the colour code is included in your character count. So once i went back and added a quite a lot of colour code to it i went over the character limit without even knowing it.
I dont think their should be a character limit in our bios. It woudl be great if ccp fixed this part of code.
As for the comments about long bios are for roleplayers. I am a pvp'r and i resent the fact that i am not allowed to display my national pride by way of the boxing kangaroo flag.
Bios arent just for role play.

For some reason, the only RP bios I've ever come across have all been the cringe-worthy fan-fiction variety. Along the lines of "[X] is a Minmatar orphan, who's parent's died fighting for freedom against the Amarr oppressor. [X] has sworn to avenge..." "[Y] is a Caldari orphan, who's parents died fighting for freedom against the Federation oppressor. [Y] has sworn to avenge..." "[Z] is an Amarr orphan, who's parents died protecting the Empire from Minmatar terrorists. [Z] has sworn to avenge...".
Increase the character limit the moment the good RPers teach the bulk of the RPers how to do it properly --------
