Here, I got an idea, everyone is up in arms how EVE is getting easier and easier because CCP *gasp* want to make more money and maybe not be a niche game forever...
So, I propose this: They create a Hardcore Shard where the hardcore types can go Hardcore it up and just arr each other to death all they want. suggestions for "Hardcore Format":

1.) Weapons shouldn't be able to be kept loaded and different weapons should have varying reload times. 2.) There should be no insurance at all really, what insurance company would cover a ships designed for combat? 3.) There should always be an SP loss involved in podkills the amount of which controlled by your choice of clone (Which should be more expensive) NPCs should be more dangerous with roaming packs intended to nuke loners. 4) Boosters should have a chance of braindamage (sp loss) every time you use them, implants a chance of braindamage when installed. 5.) Gates should have flood control. 6.) The bigger ships should have to rely on other smaller ships for non-shooting things like Nos and target painting. 7.) Everything should be more expensive and skills should take longer to train, all learning skills should be removed. 8.) Warp bubble formation should take longer.
9.) When u get podkilled you die perminantly if you dont have a clone contract 10.) Make it so that you have to renew the contract every so often AND make it so there is no default clone - IF you get caught with yer pants down you DIE not just lose skills. 11.) You start out with either 0 or very very few SP
There any more Ideas you can list put em up. This would be something I wouldnt do mind you, but IM not a hardcore player either... IM a mission running carebear for the most part... I have yet to earn a PVP kill... I even have a *Gasp* positive sec status O.o And, yes, this is a serious thread, Im not being sarcastic... Hell, it might help the population problems.

12) remove all aspects of 'fun' from a game then charge money for it.
Hmm...sounds about as much fun as having a large angry man kick you in the nards...

I think having skills train 5 times faster and losing all skillpoints or a substantial amount of your skillpoints each time you die would be better.
No cloning. You die, thats it, game over.
But the penalty for podkilling in should be much higher along with he capsules made so they cant be accidently killed by smartbombs (requiring 10-15 blasts to kill it).
Killing a capsule anywhere would result in a huge sec status decrease. If your sec status becomes low enough people could podkill you without a sec hit.
Basically, make podkilling done only when the person REALLY ****es you off, or they are isk sellers and you want to deal a serious blow.
Podding right now is kinda meaningless.
Hey it'll never happen but we can dream.

yeah and since the amount of people playing there is unlikely to exceed SiSi's online, it doesn't need big investments in hardware. to code all those changes would take some time though.

All this HardCore Shard or SoftCore Shard talk is pointless and clueless. There is only one EVE!
Why not just accept that this is a game which is quite able to cater for both, without destroying the feel we all have come to enjoy about EVE??
I know sometimes EVE can annoy the CareBares I know sometimes EVE can annoy the HardCore players
But EVE no matter what every selective mind feels, this is the best game on the market! And the reason for it is simply this!
It have features that the carebear loves! It have features that the HardCores loves!
It will never be perfect! But by damn! Why not use your energy on promoting and working for EVE as a whole??

I think that Eve Hardcore should require the use of a special mouse, every time you die this mouse chops a finger off.It would be great at fanfests as you could easily tell who has died or not.
And how often while at a social or unrelated party, have you wanted to ask someone if they played eve, well, now you just casually nod at the hand and say : 'Podded?' ,the answer will reaffirm your suspicions. Then the fight stories can begin.

28. When you sign the EULA to Eve Hardcore, you give CCP right of attorney and sign your life away. Upon being podkilled $5000 will be charged to your bank account and hitmen will arrive at your home to dispatch you, completing the immersioneer experience.

Pfft, nooblings. EVE hardcore ?
NO CLONES. When your pod is killed, you die for good.
All assets, all ISK, everything is GONE for good for you. You have to start over from scratch if you weren't careful enough to place "stuff" on alts.
Corpse also yields implants installed (90% chance for L1 cybernetics required, 70% for L2, down to 10% for L5 cyber). Personal assets still owned by the "corpse" are placed on public 1-week auction, 0 ISK start, no buyout, proceeds go to EVE Central Bank (ISK sink).
Everything else is the same as normal though.

Well, a couple rebuttals to this statement.
First off... Back when I started playing 7k was a huge amount of people on the server and today we see nearly 35k people. That is a 5x increase, with no appreciable increase in lag. As the subscriber base increases, so does the revenue needed for server upgrades, and as long as the increase in population continues at a gradual rate, the hardware should be able to keep up. The way the EVE server is set up allows for easy expansion to handle increased clients in the future.
Second, I seem to remember one of the devs stating that CCP is not interested in stealing 1 million subscribers away from WOW. I am sure they would welcome the increased income, but a sudden inflyx could really cause them problems, so they are not pursuing such a situation.
Third... IF they did get an increase to 1 million subscribers, doing some quick calculations using the current numbers.. in 4 years, CCP has managed to upgrade the server from being able to handle 7k people to 35k people, that is a 5x increase. Now at the moment there are something like 200k subscriptions, of those 200k at peak times 35k are on. If you do some simple calculations, you will see that a 5x increase from 200k people would take us to 1 million, and the server peak users to 175k, If CCP has been able to withstand a 5 fold increase over 4 years, IF the mmo last another 4 years at a continual growth rate, and considering that technology does not sit idle as time passes, the 1 million subscriber mark seems very feasible to me.
Not that this is meant as any argument, just pointing out some observations. And please do not crucify me for my math, there was alot of rounding involved ;P But I am confident that more accurate analysis would support my position. -=^=-
