Unfortunately, I have since read that dx9l is a Vista-only optimized dx9 client for running dx9 games. Really, MS would be shooting itself in the foot if they allowed/developed dx10 for XP... they'd lose a big proportion of the potential Vista upgrades. For this reason, I doubt DX10 will ever be present for XP. Pity. I don't want Vista, even though my system was built to fully support it.

This man is correct, 9.0L is also vista only and is just to reduce compatibility issues for older games. ---------

On a related note, I stumbled across a vista-api to non-vista OS's reverse engineering firm.

interesting, though I'm sure MS will do it's best to bury it in lawyer's briefs...
I like how it's called Alky

Is DirectX fully patented and copyrighted so that no one is illegally allowed to hack it, copy it or abuse it? If not, then Microsoft can't stop anyone from converting DX10 to be used on Vista.

i think the alky project involves writing new wrappers for dx10, which don't affect the freely distributable files, making it legal.
then again, Microsoft have lots of lawyers and all the money in the world, so if they do decide to sue it'll either leak all over the web a la DeCSS, or sink without a trace.

As long as it is verifiably clean room reverse engineered then it is legal.
