I'm sick to death of 4X turn-based games (I've played way too much Galciv II: Dark Avatar lately). I just spent all of last weekend beating STALKER from beginning to end; that was an awesome game. But now I can't seem to find anything else.
I've been looking around for a good game in one of two categories, but anything that is good and I haven't played would do also. The two main categories are:
Deus Ex/System Shock/Stalker/etc: FPS-RPG hybrid Freelancer/X3/etc: Space combat/trading game
But it seems I've played all the good ones... any PC games, whether in these categories or not, that you folks can recommend?

I'd rather stick to games made in the past 10 years or so. I've played way too much Starcraft anyways.

I don't play console games, generally.
I can count on one hand all the console games I've found enjoyable for more than an hour or two, and almost all of them are available for the PC.
Just going off the top of my head I can think of Rayman 2, Worms, and FF7, and thats about it.
(And please don't make this into a console flamewar, I want names of PC games to play!)

All I can think of for the space trading wotsit games are Dark Star One, Vega Strike, Privateer (Open-source remake using Vega Strike's engine) and... Frontier. But that's about 15, 16 years old now.

Dark Crusade has completely ****ed me off. They've put unit limits on some of the most important elements to an armies composition. What kind of half assed Imperial Guard army only have 2 Leman Russ tanks and 3 Arties? I want to line a ridge with Artillery and rain fiery death on the godless scum I'm fighting against.

Edited by: Micheal Dietrich on 26/06/2007 21:54:06 Personally I keep a little bit of everything on my pc.
Warhammer dark crusade for my latest stragety. Empire Earth was fun but just started getting boring and the skirmish's took forever if you went through every age.
MOH Pacific Assualt for my first person shooter.
San Andreas for when I'm bored. My newest stint is ****ing off the cops up to level 3 or 4 and jumping into the plane you get in the desert and trying to have dogfights with the jets. Or I'll get the remote explosives, throw a ton on a vehicle and drive until I see a barricade and jump and push the button for lots of booms.
Eve for my space faring.
LOTRO for my mediavel self.
I still keep a N64 around with perfect dark and 007. Got all the cheats on both activated and I sometimes just have a field day on certain maps. Also retained a dreamcast (white over black color scheme; rare) with soulcaliber 2 and sega GT. I acquired a 41" tv lately so I'm quite possibly am thinking of going for a Wii because that really looks like fun.

Here's my ranked list of favorite games. You've probably played a good number of them. But they're good, or at least I think they are ...
In order from favorite to 'least favorite':
Deus Ex 1 SW: KOTOR 1 HL 1 Freespace 2 Longest Journey + Dreamfall HL 2/epi.1 Homeworld 1 + Cataclysm System Shock 2 Psychonauts FEAR 1/expansion GTA3 (original) (i only like Italian gangsters) Chronicles of Rid**** Max Payne 1/2 Call of Duty 1 only NWN1 Original Startopia Splinter Cell 1/2/3
---Unranked 'not-complete-waste-of-time' games below--- Hitman Blood Money (others are probably good to, iunno) Alice Doom 3 ROE (only the expansion) Prey

I've played Freespace 2, great game, and a good timewaster.
Its the only game of its type I've found that doesn't critically need a joystick. I tried Independence War 2 but I ended up setting up two sets of 6 keys, one for each hand, to mimic a joystick for each and it still wasn't enough

Cant go wrong with Baldurs Gate II, its probably the best game ive ever played imo. I havent played it in quite a while unfortunatly, its just too epic for me to install and only be able to play a few hours a day.
Some older Deathmatch games prehaps? Quake III and Unreal Tournament the original one for example, they are great games if you want to just unleash some carnage for a few hours. I play some Max Payne and Deus Ex to satisfy my urge to play a more meaningful shooter.

Silent Hunter 3.
Picture yourself stalking a British convoy, taking sightings, plotting its course, identifying targets, planning an approach, sneaking away, hurrying past, positioning yourself, spending a good while doubting the accuracy of your calculations while you nervously wait for the convoy to catch up, lining up your shots when it does, firing all your torpedoes and then making yourself scarce before they hit while you listen to the ticking of your chronometer. Hours of work (if you're meticulous) for a couple of bangs (if you're lucky) or a lot bangs and skull-splitting pings (if you're not so lucky).
If that doesn't sound like fun to you then... errr, then you're just like everyone I know. Never mind then.
(I know SH4 has been out a for while but I want none of it since 1. Ubi abandoned SH3 way too early and 2. Atlantic > Pacific)

Minsc for the win.
I honestly preferred the first Baldur's Gate though. I still haven't completed the second one. Too many dungeons. The original had far more outdoor areas which I enjoy more that claustrophobic dungeons. Minsc was funnier in the first than the second game too, although the party interaction in the second is better. Aerie annoys the hell out of me though.
Anyways, games I recommend are Fallout 1 & 2, Deus Ex, Max Payne 2, Fable (PC Version). Seeing as you're fed up with 4X games I can't recommend Civ IV (I haven't played it nearly as much as I played Civ 3, which I played to death many times over).

Yeah DS, you should definately try BG2 - purely for the party interactions, but it's a good game in it's own right too. It's somewhat dated now, the more modern ones being Neverwinter Nights and Neverwinter Nights 2, though they lack the interactions (or 1 does, haven't tried NWN2) __________________________ Indulge Me Consider Yourself Indulged - Immy ♥ Wow immy scored - Xorus |

Played them, didn't like IW2 because it was nearly impossible to play even with an extremely complicated keyboard control setup, since it didn't have mouse support.
I don't even see how you could play it with one joystick, let alone none!

If not Eve Online, I play Armed Assault (which I described in your other thread about FPS games) and Medieval 2: Total War. Imo the TW series always delivers, I dig the mixture of turn based global strategy and the real time battles on the 3D map. Definitely my favorite rts game/series of games.

What's with everyone only mentioning old games?
Come on people, start mentioning new/newish games and even other MMO's.

I'm old enough to have nostalgia
Seriously though, when a good game comes along, it generally stays a good game forever, however old it gets. And since there are a lot more "old" games than "new" ones, there are a lot more good ones from my back catalogue than there are that are brand spanking new. --------

Most enjoyable newish game I've played and thought was great, though I'm stuck at the first Orcs is Dark Messiah: Might and Magic.
However you NEED to patch it with the downloadable update because out of the box it's the most unstable POS I've ever played.

Crimsonland. It's a game where you have hoards of really dumb enemies, and you're given insanely overpowered weapons. You figure out the rest.
