A few weeks ago, the New York Times ran an article concerning a revised Council of Stellar Management with player representation. In the blog was mention of a number of key elements to the revised CSM, including the hiring of an economist. While the announcement was made only recently, this move is something that has been in planning for quite some time. The first reference was made during LeKjart's 'Emergence' presentation at the 2005 Fanfest.
Now that he has been hired, Dr.EyjoG is diving into the economy behind EVE. However, he has taken the time to make an introduction to the EVE community. You can read more about the good Doctor in the new Dev Blog, Move over, Greenspan.

Welcome Dr Eyjo,
Are they going to give you some awesome handle or is Dr Eyjo that handle?
As I just started reading (yes, some of us really do read) Basic Economics by Thomas Sowell, I look forward to hearing your opinion and perhaps a comparison to the real world markets.

As a native Rhode Islander, I imagine that studying at URI was a good learning experience for someone working at CCP based on what I've heard of their drinking habits.

Welcome Dr.EyjoG
The most exciting niche to me in EVE economy is market prediction. Everytime a new patch brings changes to ships, modules, npc's and so on, certain items will have high price fluctuations. Beting on the right horse before the pacth and hoping it runs like hell after is really exciting
The only concern I have about EVE economy is when things like THIS happen. It is important to regulate better npc buy and sell orders. I would say remove them all but I know they are important for new players that start trading.

Edited by: Deren Thaldrel on 27/06/2007 16:02:00 Welcome and a request :)
As one of your early projects would you be able to do some wealth or income distribution measurements of the EVE population? I would be very interested in seeing EVE's Gini coefficient, income or wealth distribution by quintiles, and income or wealth distribution by age of character or skillpoint groupings.
The reason for this request does have to do with design and general gameplay concerns as my expectation is that there is a very high Gini coefficient in EVE and that, perhaps, as much as 70% of the wealth in EVE is concentrated in the top 2 quintiles. This wealth distribution could have some interesting implications for the type of isk sinks that I've seen under discussion as I believe some of them impact the majority, and much poorer, players more than the smaller, but wealthier, group of players.
Thanks :)

Great!!
I always said that Eve has lots of potential and I mean that not only shooting at ships makes Eve interesting. Actually Eve is the ONLY good object to study, the single cluster approach pays of well here.
There are tens of thousands individual participants, all trying to make their best. There are producers and traders, rich people who doesn't want to do 5 jumps to get an item 30% cheaper and there are small people who will do those jumps. There are resellers and and and...
Well done CCP and welcome Dr. EyjoG!
Oh yes, I am most curious about the further blogs also

Edited by: Serenity Steele on 27/06/2007 16:06:19 Welcome to EvE.
You may find a little less enthusiasm from the players of EvE for the application of Broad Economics KPIs than could possible be expected by commercial and research entities interesting in using the EvE Sandbox. Please don't let this discourage you.
IMO, It's not macro/micro economics that will get the playerbase excited, it's applied statistics. Luckily this is probably something as easy as adding 1+1 for you
For the self-driven EvE organisation, what is interesting from an economics perspective is the GDP of the alliance, it's economic capability and war reserves. What makes this an interesting calculation is that not all alliance members are cloned equal. Translation of the economic capability to sustainable territorial growth and/or (war) campaign duration is dependent upon the kill ratios.
I Look forward to hearing your opinion on these issues.
Edit: PS Can what's your position on the need for the game system to support share trading?

Glad to see you on the Dev Team! As for my impressions of the in game economy-
It's a great, mysterious sandbox, but you already knew that. I never realized the full potential of the free market's power until the introduction of the invention system shattered the T2 BPO cartels. Watching the market prices dive on T2 items was a hoot. And then there was the drone region inroduction destroying my gigantic mineral investment... *sigh*
It's a great untamed beast. My biggest concern with it is isk inflation, but it appears that the devs are already well on their way to creating new, bigger isk sinks with the addition of the LP store. I wonder, have we been given the ability to purchase GTCs with isk simply because isk inflation is that bad? So bad that in a sense "buying isk" from the players for $15 will save CCP more trouble than the repercussions of allowing all that isk to sit in wallets around the galaxy?
One thing's for sure. You've got your work cut out for you. I look forward to your economy report!

Will Dr.Eyj=G have any kind of tools available to you to help regulate the economy of EVE? Greenspan has semi-control over the prime lending rate and all that. What kind of control will Dr.Eyj=G have or it will be more of an observation perspective to put figures to the EVE economy, inflation, value of isk, preferences, 'standard of living' etc...? ----

I'm personally very curious about your take on inflation in EVE, the balance of currency supply vs. the supply of goods, and the impact of no trade barriers between the NPC factions.

Friedman all the way ! Actually im interested on Dr Eyj=G thoughts on the Hotelling Lemma concerning the emergence of central trade hubs in game and whether he thinks it supports the theory. Also another interesting area that i would like to see commented on is the blind vs open auction system and how he thinks the newly implemented system of auctioning might affect outcomes in multistage games.

In my personal opinion it's the weakest point of otherwise great EVE economy - lack of financial markets. It's not only case of share trading, but all kinds of financial activity. I'm talking about bonds, and most importantly, bank loans. I would be happy to hear about your thoughts on the matter.
Cheers

I'm glad that we've got a good balance between the two, especially with the low-end minerals being Fiat through the fixed price of shuttles <3
