To be brutally honest, EVE is just not a game we can expect a lot of people to like and play.
CCP has said it oodles of times in the past, and I hope they still chant it as their mantra when the devs work on it and the producers produce it and the big wigs wig out over it.
This ideal was/is:
EVE is a niche game, it's longevity and success relies on exploiting a smaller but altogether untapped niche.
We the average EVE lover, love EVE because it's the best thing going that does what it does.
In my opinion, I think it's like comparing apples to oranges when you compare the success of WOW to EVE.
Of COURSE one game will have more or less subscribers because plainly, the games deal with not only two completely different game styles, but universe concepts.
Now comparing games like DDO, LOTRO and WOW makes sense... Compairing EVE and Earth and Beyawnd made sense in the past... Even compairing EVE to SWG, and SWG to WOW makes sense in some ways.
But WOW and EVE have nothing in common except both are called MMO's.
I think CCP IS a success, on a par with blizzard because of it's success at monopolizing and catering to a niche in the market that has no competition and despite this still puts out a game that IMHO outshines those that DO have competition.
EVE is a game the gaming world NEEDS.
WOW isn't a game the world needs, as there will always be an EQ, or LOTRO, or DDO.
TBH my only hope for the fantasy setting MMO is in the Conan MMO due out sooner or later.
I may take time off to play that one if it delivers.
But I'm not expecting much.
Lastly, EVE DOES appeal mostly to people in their late 20's and over. People with more refined and more mature tastes and interests.
People in my age group (30 somethings) have more interest in MMO's that can be real escapes, places we can lead alternate lives.
TBh, I also consider EVE to be the CLOSEST thing to true virtual reality that we have...
All it's missing is a pair of VR gloves and VR goggles and a pod filled with goo that makes us feel weightless.
And that could be made if you had the bucks to burn on such a custom crafted peripheral.
What other game actually has real consequences? Real world effecting goals and events? What other game allows a person to metagame their way to power and wealth as well as someone who grinds missions?
Not many...
EVE is a success... End of story. ********************************************* "Stars Die... Empires fall... We are dust..." ********************************************* |
