Was thinking last night.. is pirating dead.. so here are my reasons for thinking so.
Pirating in eve as i have thought about it so far is about being a combat pilot and picking on those who dont wish to fight you, so gate camping, mission/ratter hunting.. noobie pvpers etc.. just griefing in general.
So as far as eve goes now.. since Relevations I and all the changes i think pirating is quite dead since going into 0.0 counts as consentual pvp since you go into 0.0 on purpose and it isnt like on any routes etc.
But with low sec space they put it in the way of areas like Rancer and Criel.. so 0.1-0.4 is now far more secure than it used to be. Due to changes in how people make isk there are no longer miners in 0.1-0.4 and ratters are rare since missions are easier ways of making money, there are also the changes to 0.0 ratting which is effectivly mining.. with guns.
There is also the factor of 0m warps to gates which imo ruined the whole adventure of going into low sec space.
So now in Eve it seems to me like they really have seperated the carebears from the combat pilots.. carebears stay in 0.5-1.0 and combat pilots stay in 0.0.. mainly. This leaves the huge gap of 0.1-0.4 with no one in it effectivly giving a barrier between carebears and non carebears.
you do get mission runners and such but to hunt them down you need probes.. and probes ruin ship setups and u cant go out strolling through low sec looking for targets if you have probes cus they gimp ur ship.
So with pirates not having miners and ratters to shoot and the main issue being RISK/REWARD, i ask my question which is.. is pirating dead? Has CCP given carebears their right to move through low sec space with nearly no threat of loss?
blockade runners.. worthless since 0m warps.. why use a 10k cargo space super quick mwd ship when u can just insta warp anywhere?
I do miss the old Eve-Online back last year.. Eve had so much more flavour to it.. flying around ganking everyone i could.. the occasional merc/bounty hunter after me.. but now i just dont have anything to shoot.
And with 0.0 being completley off limits to solo pilots due to 30-50man blobs dominating the space meaning you dont find lone targets to prey on.. why bother playing really.
I as a pirate.. feel eve has cut me out of the picture.

There is no more fun in low sec space.. no feeling of fear as you enter a system thinking "oh there could be 5 pirates in here tryna kill me!".. all u get is.. either HUGE blobs.. or dribbles of people floating in and out doing 0m warps.
i want excitment and adventure not pointless wastes of time.. knowing that there is always a bigger blob.

its very true.. but i didnt do the ganking.. so i didnt get the fun, and the potential of 30000 players who want to do the ganking.. and only 10 or so threads a day on it.. that leaves VERY big margin of people potentialy not ganking.
CCP.. i really want my right to gank carebears back.. make them come into low sec.. give them a reason to that they cant resist!

Eve Online has evolved alot since when i began playing.. maybe it's through experience.. or actual changes that have drawn me to the conclusion that it has evolved into something very ugly.
I began playing this game because it was like no other.. the ability to actualy go out there and ruin someones lovley workings.. all by myself.. and the occasional person doing it back to me, it was great fun.
Eve has changed consistantly since Beta.. each time moving away from what most vetran players remember. If the world perminantly evolves around you and you dont want it to.. then you're stuck with it.. but if the world evolves around you and it isnt as fun.. isnt the logic to put it back the way it was?

Why don't you just venture all the way out in 0.0?
New term: Low-sec carebears
If you want to PVP, then join an alliance and start trying claim some realestate in 0.0 - other than that get off my carebearing a..
--- Semi usefull comment --- About the probes ruining the ship setup. I would guess you would have to run with a scanning ship and a combat ship. Just like those of us who are using probes to find exploration sites.

When preditors out-number their prey they eventually starve. Natural selection and all that jazz. Go gank some unsuspecting pirates if you can't find carebears, I hear they dont worry too much about tank :P

that isnt what eve has been for me.. it's not about me joining a huge multi-thousand corperation/alliance.. it was about me being a lone hunter.. just me and the elements.. something about this game used to make me feel like a real hunter.. but now eve is dominated by the farmers... people in mass doing things in mass.
nothing left for the solo pilots.

Population density. Triple the systems. Leave empire and 0.0 with the same number they have now. As the population continues to expand we'll move more and more into lowsec. Problem solved. |

veldspar is worth the same as jaspet. pyrox is worth more than hemorphite. plagio, scordite, omber, and kernite are better than hedbergite.
even when low-ends were cheap and lowsec mining was theoretically more profitable than highsec, the ~20% higher income wasn't enough to justify the risk and increased hauling time for most people.

Edited by: Undercover Palmtree on 30/06/2007 06:12:08 There are many ways to kill carebears, you just need to stop flying around in low sec and start thinking a little outside the box. War dec, suicide ganking, ore thieving, etc. There are tons of things you can do and you will make a lot more profit than you can make in low sec.

k.. im guna explain this only once for the entire thread.
This thread is about the fact that Solo pirating does not happen in Eve online anymore because of CCP's influence to make more and more fleet warfare happen, and that is not what i signed up for 3 years ago.

No, pirates were too effective hence players won't go there.
Mission rewards are noticeably better, Roids might not be worth more but they are actually decent sized (most roids in Empire pop in 2-3 cycles of a strip miner), rats are better (nothing higher than a frig spawns in Empire belts), exploration sites are considerably better.
But the shear number of pirates have skewed the risk/reward for those you think are targets, hence NO reward is going to entice them into your sights.
Like mentioned above, too many predators and they starve. There are too many predators in LowSec and the Carebears know it. CCP isn't going to make them fight you, its bad for their real life business. <-----------> Factional Warfare:

you tell that to all the people who have been pirates since Beta.. and still want to do the same thing now. CCP not only doesn't make them go into low sec they influence them to stay away from low sec by not giving any reason to go there.
To put it bluntly.. eve online has too many pilots now.. and it has changed for the worse.

If used to mine jaspet when I was a noob. That was until I took the time to do some math. If there were some worthy low sec ore, I would go there again.

i can asure you.. with the prices of minerals and the risk>reward being so high you're hulk with t2 miners will earn you alot more by grinding away at those scord/veld rocks than anything you can get in low sec.

CCP has given plenty of reasons to go, including the new Level 5 missions. Incentives are NOT going to entice players that don't want to PvP into going into LowSec. They aren't interested regardless of the reward.
I find it semi-humorous that you say that there are "too many pilots in EvE" and at the same time gripe about no targets. How did you come to this twisted concept?
Maybe the difference is that now people are playing intelligently and have learned how NOT to get ganked? Maybe those same players are teaching new players in true Multi-player fashion? Maybe their concept of "fun" doesn't include shooting at you or being shot at?
Maybe those "been around since Beta" pirates have just forgotten what it was like previously? Maybe they are getting old and set in their ways? Maybe with years of experience they have lost the thrill when they spent hours planning their first kill?
Maybe they have even forgotten how to use the map. You know, the map that shows hundreds of ships blown up every hour in LowSec? Maybe they are just sitting in their (previously) favorite systems and wondering why the universe has passed them by?
Pirates like the OP need to adapt, quit whining and find new ways of doing things or they will go the way of the real life pirates on earth did; extinction. Other pirates seem to be able to find targets without too many issues, why can't the OP? <-----------> Factional Warfare:

because i don't find any of that stuff fun tbh.. the fear of being insta blobbed around every 0.0 corner and having a full officer armed vindicator just waiting to be blobbed really well, what is the point?
I have spent years working my way through skills.. working my way up in this game and for nothing.. 10 noobies with 2 months playing experience in half decent ships like nos domis and anything else are capable of bringing down 3 years worth of SP.. with pretty much no hastle.
there used to be the odd few good pilots in good ships.. now everyone seems to have them.

Although I think there are elements in your OP that ring true, there's a lot of things that reveal your lack of experience in the area.
* Gate-camping for instance is still quite possible, however, now you have to either use smartbombs (to catch those who come to a gate from another) or lock & web them fast enough when they jump through the gate you're currently at. Requires a bit of work, but it's still very doable.
* Scanning missions is still quite doable, the problem isn't so much how something gimps your setup, very few use the same ship to fight a target as they use to probe it down. You use an alt, or one guy who's task is to probe the target, then everyone warps to him when he got the target. However, the changes to scanprobing makes it a pretty darn boring job.
* Blockade runners are still very viable... gatecamping drakes & myrmidons with sensor boosters still can lock most haulers quick enough when they come through a gate to pose a direct threat to a non-stabbed hauler. Haulers actually are the most common victims of gatecamps.
* Belt hunting however seem pointless, anyone with enough clue of the game will not go to kill rats at belts in low-sec. There is no profit to it whatsoever. 72,000 isk, wohoo! No, instead anti-pirates and other people who want to fight bait pirates at belts, and then it becomes consensual PvP (which really wasn't the point). Low-sec belt-piracy is dead I would say. The economy of EVE has changed so much since the old days, people just don't see ratting in low-sec viable anymore. And those who do fit crap on their ships, and aren't usually worth the ammo. (But I guess still can provide some fun for a bored pirate)
What needs to be addressed is to create a FUN (but challenging) scan-probe system (I dunno, but I think the old old one (triangulation) was rather good), enough reason to rat in low-sec (at least make high-end loot drop more often), and possibly make it so there's a chance for targets to bounce off of the gates, making it viable to select warp to 5000m for instance.
