Hey folks,
Are blue screen (Windows XP) crashes in ATI drivers (Catalyst 3.10) a known problem? Is there a workaround? The hardware is a Radeon 9600 Pro.
I seem to crash pretty dependably after 10 minutes or so in space. I'm not yet sure if there's one identificable graphical effect or object that's to blame -- but it does often happen after undocking or gating.
Note, this is NOT a CTD, but a full system crash. The minidump generated (in \WINDOWS, not in Eve's directory) contains the lines:
*** STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000090,0xBFA3615D,0xB1755614,0x00000000) *** ati3duag.dll - Address BFA3615D base at BFA17000, DateStamp 3fcd5040
and they're the reason I am blaming ATI's drivers.
Anybody know anything?

The 0x0000008E stop code is 'KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED' and results when a kernel mode program (e.g. an ATI display driver) generates an uncaught exception.
The specific exception, 0xC00000090, is 'STATUS_FLOAT_INVALID_OPERATION'. Sure sounds like in the middle of the vast complexity that is a modern 3D driver, something very unfortunate happens to some floating point calculation.
I see Catalyst 4.1 was just released. I will sacrifice a goat, try it and pray...

Catalyst 4.10 was just released. You might want to try those.

Not the best one as it seems, game minimizes to tray when i try other resolutions than 1024x768 and stays there, maxing not possible ... any known workaround?

Alas, I get precisely the same error with 4.1.
However, downgrading to 3.4 looks promising -- two hours of play without a crash, which is definitely a record.
There's occasional rendering artifacts, but that's a lot easier to live with than blue screen crashes.
I guess I'll give 4.2 a shot in a month or so.

I run a Radeon 9600 Pro and have yet to have a single blue screen, I do occasionally get CTD's when switching between windowed and fullscreen modes though that may have been fixed with the 4.1 drivers which seem to be working just fine. What version of DirectX are you running? Nul.

Went back to Catalyst 3.10 and everything is fine again, not CTDs, only problems when alt-tabbing to desktop. Maybe setting the color depth of game and desktop will help ...
