In the UK, it's July and I'm wearing a jersey! This has been happening for days/weeks.
The temperature is only 15 degrees Celsius. Normally, it's in the mid twenties and we wear shorts.
The UK has also had torrential rain with flood warnings in 31 regions yesterday!
How can it be global warming?!
Is global warming an excuse to increase taxes on petrol? Do some scientists talk about global warming just to get more research grants?
I find it very hard to believe global warming exists now.

I could go throygh the science here mate but to be honest I can't be bothered. So I'll just suggest that you go away and read around the subject a bit. Extremal weather conditions are a predicted effect of global warming, and if/when the greenland ice sheet melts you can expect UK temperatures to get much much colder.

Yer, yer, I know - it's not cool to go against the hype. It's like a heresy.
I seems those politicians/cranky scientists have thought up all sorts of stupid notions to explain how global warming is making us colder.

there is a great theory that says.. if the earth warms up and melts the Greenland ice sheet, all the fresh water that gets dumped into the ocean will turn off the gulf stream. Once the gulf stream stops bringing warm water past the UK we (ppl in the UK) will freeze.
Also warm air carries more water which can mean heaver rains.

Theres not enough recorded history of our weather to say if this is the effect of global warming. Although i highly doubt we are helping the planet much.
Theres records that in south UK there used to be vineyards, now what does the temp have to be to grow grapes and produce wine? I cant remember how long ago this was, maybe 200 years.

As I understand it the more heat that is trapped in the atmosphere due to extra CO2 means there is more energy in the system. This equals more extreme weather events of all kinds. They have had almost no rain in California this year and floods in Texas. ItĘs getting a bit weird all over.

we have millions of years of evidence with regard to the weather patterns and climate composition, eg from the ice cores. the argument goes that the disturbing change in the last 100 years has been so rapid that it can only be explained by man made global warming. global warming is scientific fact. the naysayers are minimal, (you'll find this out if you read enough) and the arguments you can read trying to debunk global warming are all laughable. however, the internet being what it is, it is very easy to end up reading a lot of crap with minimal personal research that might convince you otherwise. do a bit more research and you'll see these arguments are mostly really old, like the wine 1 you mentioned, and the majority of 'smart' sceptics have conveniently forgotten they were touting these not so long ago. anyway this should be locked like all the other ones. no politics remember

indeed.
an extreme example of that is the movie "The day after tomorrow". strip some of the nonsense, and you have a somewhat viable theory of what global warming can cause. ---

Contrary to popular belief, global warming DOES NOT mean that it is going to be hotter.
You may have noticed that this has been the wettest June ever recorded in the UK. Why? Well one explanation is global warming- global warming means that more water is evaporated off of the sea, which is carried by the gulf stream right over the British Isles.
Indeed, if global warming goes the way that scientists predict, thee UK coul suffer a serious ice age while the rest of the world bakes. You see, the UK is on the same latitude as Moscow; the only reason Britain enjoys the warmth we get is because of the air flow of the gulf stream. Global warming would likely disrupt this gulf stream, giving us Brits a distinctly more Arctic experience. --------

You're completely correct. Global warming means that all contries in the world should have 40 degrees celsius temperatures 365 days a year.
Global warming is an excuse to increase petrol taxes.

You do realise that global warming means that the average temperature around the world, will increase by 1-2 degrees right? And that the effects of it are long-term? it's not something that's going to have any effect that you'll notice at all. Not untill the gulf-stream stops and we enter a new ice-age ofcourse, assuming those scientists are correct.
I'm not saying that global warming is going to have the effect that Al Gore says it will, and I'm not saying that it's a load of crock either. All I'm saying is, that someone (i.e you) should have the the good sense to do some research before you come here and rants like a complete moron.

Plants and animals are generally carbon-neutral. In other words, they don't let off any more CO2 than they absorbed in the first place.
The exception being plants grown through petroleum-based fertilizers, and cattle who eat plants grown through petroleum-based fertilizers.

Global warming isn't myth or hype or a matter of "Believing" it or not. Its there. Check the charts, it doens't take much reaserch to show that CO2 in our atmosphere is at a totally unnatural level. The weather may not be hotter, but it is certainly messed up.

It's likely a feedback cycle, where more CO2 gives a higher temperature, and higher temperature releases more CO2. There's almost certainly a limiting factor, or else the temperature/CO2 levels would have run away to Venus-like conditions millions of years ago.

Global warming, yeah fine, ill try and be more environmental, but this whole thing is starting to get on my nerves...
Its like being told by your parents to do something that you know you have to do,m its just nagging and its starting to **** me off.
And there is evidence to support either argument, and anyone ANYONE on either side who does this or acts like its obvious that one argument is right, Immediately IMMEDIATELY loses all credibility.
Either way, The earth has been hotter than this, and colder than this the whole sensationalist aspect of the entire thing is completely unnecessary and i do believe that this is partly generated by those people joining the environmentalist movement from groups that are just being anti establishment for the sake of it.
I heard some people the other day talking about how the rain must have been caused by global warming, i just went over to them and went

True it may have been hotter, and it may have been colder, but it doesn't mean we want it to be. Call me insane, but I don't really want to live in a world which is too hot / too cold to grow enough food for 70% of the population.

My point was is that now because of the publicity and the way the media presents it, its like everything is caused by global warming! I mean people just assume that it is, i mean england is famous for being extremely wet, and even so people are saying the rain is because of global warming, im not saying its not cuased by global warming.

Let me quote 'Men Without Hats' "I like, when they talk real loud, try to tell you what they know. Say. I like, when it blows real hard and it doesn't even show. I like when they haven't seen a thing and try to tell you how to go. They say: It's plain to see, life is not a mystery to me. It's plain as day. Hope I got it just right anyways."
You NT's (Neurologically Typicals) are still animals unfortunetly. You jump on bandwagons, take opinions and twist them, and then argue. Others simply pretend something doesn't exist. Or take the popular side. What is an actual fact? Good question. Don't have an answer for you. No one does.
All we know is that one: Humans use petrol products and make carbon emissions. Heck even old coal and wood burning does damage, and that's been around for many a century, slowly adding up. Cars: Bad, bad, and did I mention bad? Your Air Conditioners, refrigerators used to (and older ones still do) produce heavy warming by-products. Has anyone seen Mexico city, Los Angeles, or even Christchurch (new Zealand) on a sunny day? Smog. The enviornment and how man lives in it is a factor some forget. Mexico City because it's a natural bowl that collects all the crap Humans make, LA because of the same reason, you can thank cars for that, and Christchurch because it too is a bowl that collected al the wood burning and it's only been less then 200 years.
Global warming? Maybe. Whatever the name our planet's is changing. I've travled the world these last 10 years, and everywhere I go, people say: The weather's changing. It's more extreme or different then it's ever been. From Aomori Japan, Invercargill New Zealand, Sao Paulo Brasil, Toronto Canada, Cape Town South Africa, etc. The weather has gone nutter. (Anyone notice the sheer amount record number of hurricans in the last few years hitting the US East Coast for instance?)
As others have said, rain in places where it's not normal (or in more extreme depths then ever recorded with floods), or extreme draughts in others. Colder/Hotter summers depending on your geographical region in the Northern Hemishere, and heck even colder/warmer winters in the Southern Hemisphere at the same time.
Now, don't get me wrong. Certainly not going to say we're doomed. But something is going on. Ignoring it, or naysaying is not going to help. Mother nature is going to do what's it got to do to heal, and ice ages have happened before long ago in the past. That alone is a possible 'fact'.
Just keep your mind open, and watch for all the changes. Not one thing is to blame, but there is the possbility that Humans and thier ignorance are deeply at the cause. to say otherwise is Human arrogance to boot.

Good point. People tend to forget that there were ice ages before, and man had nothing to do with it. And suddenly we're responsible for 'the coming one'? Some of the things i read actually mention that we're due an ice age naturally around this time anyway, something with tectonic movement or realigning the planet's magnetic axis... Dunno for sure.
What would be a good idea though, is to try and delay it untill we've got a rudimentary planetary treaty concerning resources, because what do you think will happen if the areas where all the stockpiles are suddenly freeze over and become virtually unaccessible?
Too bad our world is ruled by 70 year old d**kheads who don't care about anyone else, they won't be around to see their screwups anyway.

No. Last hurricane season, not a single hurricane made landfall in the US. After the unusually high 2005 numbers, forecasts predicted 2006 would be almost as bad, but it ended up being very quiet.
Statistics are funny. There are peaks and troughs appearing seemingly at random. The unusually strong 2005 season and the unusually weak 2006 season should both be put down as a statistical noise.

From http://www.realclimate.org/index.php?p=13:
Quote: From studying all the available data (not just ice cores), the probable sequence of events at a termination goes something like this. Some (currently unknown) process causes Antarctica and the surrounding ocean to warm. This process also causes CO2 to start rising, about 800 years later. Then CO2 further warms the whole planet, because of its heat-trapping properties. This leads to even further CO2 release. So CO2 during ice ages should be thought of as a "feedback", much like the feedback that results from putting a microphone too near to a loudspeaker.
In other words, CO2 does not initiate the warmings, but acts as an amplifier once they are underway. From model estimates, CO2 (along with other greenhouse gases CH4 and N2O) causes about half of the full glacial-to-interglacial warming.
(Emphasis mine.)

We did however just have the hottest April since 1800.
'Global warming' isn't uniform in localised areas, you don't just say "hey we are having a cold period so it must be BS!".
That's like saying that winter is BS because it's a bit warm one day in December.
Or you could argue that it's all a big scam and have a big party with people like Bjorn Lomborg and the other 'scientists' for hire.
The greenhouse effect is a proven fact. The science involved is taught in pretty much every school. It is also a fact that we are putting massive amounts of CO2 (a greenhouse gass - obviously) into the atmosphere, (about 100 times that which is realised from volcanoes per annum). You can get 3 from 2+2 if you want, i'll stick with 4.
This argument being put out that it is all to increase taxes, or some such nonsense is utterly idiotic. Do you really think that the energy industry would be happy about having to reduce carbon emmisions? The same people who are in bed with the most powerful potlitical systems the world has ever seen?
Global warming science has had a long hard struggle gaining acceptance globally, because states and industry don't want to accept it.
It dosen't exactly benefit the bottom line. It is still marginalised, that is why the resposibility to decrease CO2 emmisions is always placed on the individual rather than industry (which is why we get the daft adverts telling us to turn off our lights, which bascially do nothing).

No doubt. The question is how much effect human-released greenhouse gasses have on the climate compared to other sources of climate change. I don't feel the science is settled on this point.

The oil industry is in an interesting situation. They know the oil will run out eventually, and when that happens, they won't have any viable assets anymore. The land they sit on will be depreciated, since the oil is gone. The refineries won't have any oil to refine and might as well be scrap metal. Shale oil might save them, but people have been working on extracting it economically for years and show little promise of doing so in the foreseeable future.
So their in the position where they want to keep people using oil for now, but also know they'll have to move their business to something else eventually. Therefore, it's in their interest to deny human-created climate change, but also develop alternative energy sources.

Its pretty friggin' hot here. Humid too. When I go outside my glasses fog up. I hate that. Temperate my ass.
I do get ****ed off every time I see an SUV with one person in it...or even if it has lots of people. That has more to do with gas prices though and little to do with climate change. I'm too poor to care about climate change.

Listening to people talk about global warming is funny. Unless it's al gore, then it's just boring.

objection! *slams fist down on the desk* you can never be too asinine on these forums, especially when global warming is being discussed.

Whether or not climate change exists or is man-made, it's still a good idea to save energy and recycle where possible.
Leaving aside the arguments about peak oil, certain other resources such as copper do have finite availability, and what's not to like about lower fuel bills?

Yup, recycling and being friendly to the environment are good things, i see the use of fossil fuels as a natural progression though, hate people who act as if we should have started using solar and wind power instead of building massive coal mines (A girl at my school actually suggested this at one point... idiot..) where would we be if we had never started using them? I can imagine the world being like hell... -------------------------------------------- Stay away from my signature all of ya!!! IM WARNING YOU!!

It wouldn't be like hell. It'd just be...old. The industrial revolution could never have happened without coal and steam and oil and electricity, and without the industrial revolution, we'd still be acting like the renaissance was a modern innovation.
The fact is, the industrial revolution did happened, and always will have happened. Wind turbines weren't even the fevered dream of a mad man when the first coal-driven steam engines were being introduced. People who suggest "we should have used solar power instead of building coal mines" is just plain ignorant.
Anyhow, I'm pretty big on recycling. Got me a compost bin, I recycle my paper, plastic, glass and metal, and my house is packed full of energy saving light bulbs and such. I quite enjoy it really, its kinda satisfying. I really want to buy some solar panels for my house, but I think that might be a bit out of my league atm --------

The OP reminds me of a letter to Viz comic recently about how global warming is rubbish because every 12 months it gets really cold again.
Global warming is all about the Earth only needing the average temperature increased by a few degrees for Bad Things to start happening with the Gulf Stream flow and the resultant major changes to weather patterns etc.
Nothing (well, not much) to do with having more sunshine in the UK in July.

I've read all the arguments both for and against global warming/climate change.
Im here to tell you both sides of this fence are wrong.
what the OP and the rest of you fail to realise is that its now the Wimbledon tennis tournament here in Blighty and as such = rain

There is so much incorrect semi-scientific bantering in this thread it isn't even funny anymore.
Not gonna try and prove i'm god on the subject but let me just spill the thought of 'what we're doing to the planet now can't be good'.

Recylcing anything other than metal (and a few other things) is pretty counter productive. In many cases we're better off just putting it in a landfill.

Conserving energy (conservation in general) is always great though. I started using compact florescent bulbs before it was "cool."

I'd take those articles with a pinch of salt, if I were you. They contradict a lot of what I've read elsewhere.
The EIA, for example, states explicitly that a paper mill uses 40% of the energy to make recycled paper as it does to make virgin paper. Its true that it uses more fossil fuels (because some of the energy paper mills use is generated by burning waste wood), but that doesn't change the carbon footprint.
This Wikipedia page lists some of the swings and roundabouts of it all. Some say one way, some say the other.
The fact that the UK is pretty short of space (compared to the US) and landfills are almost without fail in nose-shot of some residential area is reason enough for me to want to recycle. The less rotting waste all over the country side, the better. --------
