I was going to check out the Eve TV thing while waiting for a patch. Then I noticed, What? costs at least $1.48 to view it? Well I stopped right there. I already pay a monthly fee to play this game, by the looks of it 30K+ people do to, now they want us to pay for video?
Well I hope there's alot of checks and balances. LOOKOUT PARENTS , that use a credit card to pay for your kids Eve account. It could cost you some bucks, especially if your kid views it over and over, like some kids like to do.
I guess the proof is in how many pay for it.

My big problem with charging for EVE TV is that EVE TV shouldn't be used as a revenue source. It should be used to advertise for EVE ONLINE. During the live EVE TV weekends in the past I saw a ton of non-eveplayers say how cool it was and wanted to try it too.
By charging they basicly lock it to only current eve players (unless you register a new streaming account and get to watch it for free once).
I could feel tempted to pay if it was "once" for an episode. Being able to download and watch it over and over. But at the moment you can only watch it over and over if you use some kind of capture program, you'd have to pay again to watch the same episode again.

Or you could simply get a catch-all email domain like mine and watch each for free ;) ---------

They also give you some free credits the first time you try it so you can try it for free to see what it is about.
And yeah...there has been a good deal of discussion about this. Personally while I think it is cool and while I can afford the price I just do not see myself doing it either.

The problem is that since EVETV is professional produced, it costs a crapton of money.

well, its their problem now. nearly no one felt the necessity to change it into something professional except themselves. everyone would have been happy with just a slightly quality improve of the streams when there is a tourney around.

I would suggest that the crux of this problem is with the first segment of your statement rather than the second. EveTV shouldn't be professionally produced if it will cost so much money.

Which in turn, of course, begs the question: WHY oh WHY EVETV!? It should have been used like the other poster said: as a free thing, capable of creating PR, thus more revenue by pulling in new gamers. by charging off the bat (like 1 free ep is going to entice new players, NOT) you limit the customers to hardcore eve fanatics, who DONT watch noobs discussing EVE tactics.
Furthermore, in relation to the Professional Poduction -> This is generally, bullcrap. All you do is build a set, get a camera, and one editor, who als writes scripts. get a dude with a mac, maybe one more, and you're set. People who work on small projects like this dont get steven spielberg salaries people: they work long gruelling hours for very little money.
You could setup things like EveTV with about 3FTE, MAX. (this is discounting the deadbeat presentors, whom obviously don't spend a whole lot of time with EVE)
So apart from the base costs of getting a mac, a camera, and a set, you have like +3 employees, at a fairly standard rate.
To clarify: My best friend writes scripts, directs, AND edits a weekly, high profile, TV show for Dutch television. He gets paid 2800 euros, ($3500) a month to do so.
The only reason his show costs a buttload of money is because of location shoots all OVER the world.
I doubt EVETV will shoot in space in the coming months. ----------------------------------------------- "CCP can't reply to Lag issues; our offices are currently experienceing desynch/lag issues. we are working on the problem." |

The last thing I paid for to watch via streaming was when Manchester United were playing Roma in the Champions' League this season. United won, so I vowed never to pay for streaming video ever again since I'd just wasted my money!

Perhaps if they viewed it as a marketing tool to garner new players? Dunno if thta moneys out but one way to think of it rather than as a direct profit center.
Or just increase player subs but $0.50/month and make it "free". Yes shows cost more than $0.50 but not everyone will pay it. If you spread that cost across all players the cost is minimal to individuals and we all get access to more EVE goodness.
Note I pulled $0.50 out of my ass. Just an example but safe to say spread across all subs the price I expect would be very tolerable.

Lets look at this from the customer-centric point of view:
Trial accounts are given away by the hundreds each day for free, a promotional expense - WE - the paying customers fundamentally fund thru our monthly fee. A promotional item that is intended to attract new players, instead its been perverted by god knows how many into an in-game ISK Seller SPAMMING engine that is getting worse and worse. Just go into any in-game trade channel to see what I mean.
EVE-TV - which I have not paid for and do not intend to pay for - is also a promotional item which actually may have some real promotional value - but who is going to pay to see it? Not many I fear.
Actually the priorities on both of these promotional items seems upside-down.
Why not allow potential and current players to view EVE-TV for free? And if a potential player finds the game concept intriguing, charge them the nominal fee of $1.48 for their two week trial? Why not?
This would serve not only to help them value the their trial experience more, it would immediately stop the abuse of the trial accounts which is right now a detriment to the paying customer's gaming experience - not an enhancement.
So how about enhancing your paying customer's gaming experience CCP instead of using our subscription fees to fund a detriment to it?
Sounds like a win-win doesn't it?

I would agree. I think EVETV is an overproduced show that will fail, as not many people will pay a dollar and a half a week to watch something boring hosted by newbies.
Honestly, I only watched about two minutes of the first episode

i tried to watch one episode in highest quality "you get 200 free credits when signing up", the quality was bad, i couldn't rewatch the show without paying again. *snip* email [email protected] for more details - hutch
in my opinion, evetv took a wrong turn. and i dont think it gets very popular if you need to pay pr view.

If you don't want to pay for it, then don't buy it. I think the FAQ pretty much answers the question.
Quote: Why do we have to pay for the weekly show and where does that money go?
EVE TV is produced and broadcast by veteran EVE players and fans, who work full-time to provide a service to EVE fans. There are also equipment and studio costs and these all must be covered if EVE TV is to continue and improve. The revenue from the weekly show will also help pay for the live PVP Tournaments. We know many say æwhy canÆt it be free?Æ and the answer is simple. It costs money to produce. People are working full time to do this. Would you do your job full time, and not be paid? Thought not.

My main worry about EVETV is that the new presenters have been only braught in for "Eye Candy" don't get me wrong eye candy is all good but not when it risk's the usefulness and the incite into the game that EVETV used to supply. If i can be proven wrong then fair enough i would consider paying if i could download it but till that happens i gonna stick with player produced videos.
P.S do i really wanna pay to watch Stavros (if he's even on it) be really annoying and sarcastic and do nothing to be enlightening? NO =================================

I would love to watch Eve TV, but like most people I see posting here, I will NOT pay for it. They already charge more then enough for the game, and as was pointed out, they are missing out on a great advertisement chance. Provide it for free and not only eveaholics like myself can watch it, but the general public who has never played eve can watch it, see what eve is all about, and more then likely want to give it a try. It is a shame that CCP feels they have to line their pockets more and more at the expense of its player base and potential new players.

If you don't want to watch it because it costs money then don't.
If you don't like it costing money but want to watch it see Xyliana's post above.
If you don't like it costing money, don't want to watch it but dont like the fact other people are watching it...whine on the forums?
Seriously though guys, if EveTV fails (and i hope it doesn't) it fails. If it wins (and I hope it does) it wins. If it effects your world for the better, more karma peace and love too you /wannabe_hippy out.
