well, I've had some thoughts, first let me say one thing. Yes i believe there is other life in space, both more advance, but also less. have they ever visited us? maybe, cant know for sure.
but think about it, what would you think if you was a race from an other maybe peacefully planet, looking at earth.. we have no respect for any other living creature, not even other humans. we destroy our own planet, kill all animals till there is 200 left of them, bomb each other. and for what? Peace? i would personal find me another planet to make contact to, i wouldn't want anything earth has to offer if i was from a more advance, and/or more peacefully world.
think what would happen if a alien ship landed on earth. the US military would capture them. search them with everything they got. properly kill them before they are done researching. then they would start on their spaceship. if they had friends, they would properly stay far far away from earth or maybe even attack earth.

I like this topic. Yes I believe in other life too. You can't tell me that all those stars at night, each one supporting X amount of planets, and not a single other one wouldn't contain life. No I don't believe they come here. would be amusing though. and most of your theory on what humans would do sounds about right but I think we would also try to eat them to see if they taste good. I mean that's how we found out about other stuff that is and isn't good for us.

The man who first eat a conga eel must have been really really hungry!
And no. See The Anthropic Cosmological Principle for why

Depends where it landed.
If it landed in London, Ken Livingstone would probably fine it for not paying the congestion charges. --------

Any race that is capable of interplanetary travel has better things to do than visit us, we're not even worth attacking.
But they dont even need to attack us, we're doing a great job of blowing ourselves up already. Maybe they are watching and taking bets to who will be the last man standing.

i like that theory... odds 10-1 that earths blows in the next 50year... :D we are used when they teach their kids in school. Kids. this is why weapons are bad, and why we need to respect each other. you wouldn't end up like those, now would you?

sall - firm believer in the stargate sg1 is a documentary theory :)
and in reference to the why would they come, maybe there curious, just because there space travelers doesn't mean were not the first ppl they meet. technically every race would have a first meeting

Unfortanatly weapons are a nessesary evil. Without weapons we end up as communist countries with 1 guy being the surpreme leader and dictating every part of our lives for our entire life, while him and his family live the good life, everyone else suffers.

ofc, and try to stop it. btw why would aliens be less random than humans, there could/would be good and bad aliens :) (very subjective terms) so why shouldn't we meet ones who can understand the concept of different personality's and think about it why would they be so stupid as to not realize that not all humans are warlike, thats stereotyping tsk tsk bad aliens

Life on Earth could have been seeded from space debris, but no one would ever know. People seem to have the misconception that so called extra-terrestial life will be bipedal humanoids; I think we'll be lucky to find space microbes in our section of the galaxy.

Yes, I do think other lifeforms exist in the universe. However I don't think they look like little green men as per shown in films such ET :P
Whether they have visted us remains to be truely proven or seen. I'd imagine they would hold little interest in us, territory wise at least.. Perhaps scientific study of our life, but that's probably it, for now at least...

...why are you assuming that this alien race themselves have never heard of war? War is bad but necessary, if everyone in the world lived in one unified utopian peace eventually someone will be born who wants more power and voila war is back. If we remove all weapons and live in "peace" than I would frankly be worried incase anything comes along with weapons and destroys us....atlest with weapons you have closure. --------

Not all animals are territorial tool using omnivores. For all we know, said life could easily be sloth-like herbivores. Humans are unique among animals because we kill each other pointlessly, in a very suicidal/self destructive pattern; it would be the same if a lion decided one day to eat the lion next to him, or a rogue ant soldier to kill its queen.
Human aggression is so pervasive and part of our culture that we are actually held back by it.

well. maybe not. what if iraq got an A-bomb? then they would throw it to isreal maybe. israel would fight back, USA would sent troops "they like war it seems" and world war 3 would most likely break out. with all the bombs this world has, i think we could eleminate the entire world in 1day. and yes maybe aliens aren't much deferend, but would they bring more war to their world?

I always remember this phrase from a programme about the universe some time back:
"If all the grains of sand across the entire Earth were stars and you painted one blue to signify our solar system, you'd have to be insane to believe there wasn't another single blue grain of sand anywhere else."
However, even though I am certain life is out there somewhere, it's bound by the same laws of physics as we are, and therefore impossible to be able to travel the vast distances required.
Even if life was on a planet orbiting our nearest star, it's 4.2 light years away. That's 4.2 years at the speed of light. That's 4.2 years at 186 thousand miles a second.
Of course, they may know ways around our physical limitations, and be able to bend space and time. Who knows? If they had the ability to travel to Earth, they could wipe us out in the blink of an eye if they desired.
Secondly, life is likely to be so different, I'm unsure we'd even recognise it as such.
Look at life on Earth: Humans. Viruses. Bacteria. Trees. From the hottest springs, to the deepest oceans, life differs so much.
And that's just on our planet, with our specific gravity, our atmospheric makeup, our planet's mineral makeup, water in abundance etc.
Yes it's out there. No we won't come across it.

Well if we could manage to go that fast it would not take us 4.2 years, take the theory of relativity into factor. ___________________________________________

Any other sentient alien race would be the same as us really if they were just as intelligent. Humans are much like animals when it comes to "disputes". For example, male gorillas will beat their chest and show off their canines to threaten other male gorillas out of taking a female gorilla. Gorillas very rarely fight, when two gorillas are having a showdown one will just by instinct back down and go find another female.
We've become too intelligent for that. Our brain allows us to overcome these basic instincts and go one step further - murder. So it is my belief that any other intelligent species will have the same problems as us.
