You guys should so be working on the de-synch issue. *whip whip whip* (in a Passion of the Christ sort of way) and not watching an advert for General Motors.

Edited by: F''nog on 06/07/2007 04:39:55 100% pure awesome. It's like I was 10 again.
There were a few problems:
1) Some of the CG scenes, as above, weren't as good as the others. This was mostly in the big fights and could have been a film problem.
2) Megatron's voice. Hugo Weaving was great, but the original voice would have been mindblowing.
3) Starscream's voice. Not the original. Need I say more?
The Autobots were done really well. They perfectly fit with their originals, and some of them really looked like the cartoon versions too. Jazz was my favorite of the minor ones. Spot on upgrade of the cartoon.
The Decepticons kinda got shafted. They weren't allowed to be developed and show off their personalities like in the show, so I hope this is rectified in the sequel. They were damn scary though.
I'm gonna have to see it again.
Edit - And for all the Bay haters out there, and I'm one of them, this is nothing like his other films. The camera actually stays focused on people for more than 2 seconds and doesn't whip around very much, or switch between angles unless actually necessary. I'm guessing we have Spielberg to thank for keeping him in check.
I used to get It. Then It changed. Now I don't even know what It is.

I was sceptical at first aswell about the voices, but after hearing Megatron speak for the first time that scepticism flew away. That voice fits the current Megatron much better than Frank Welker's does - The high, screamish voice was the kids version we saw over 20 years ago. This one has grown up, and i can't wait to see more of Megatron and Starscream...
Oh yes. Whoever thinks Mega T is down for the count should re-read the Hollywood rulebook :P

Being a transformers fan since it came out in the early 80' I thought the film was gonna be a big pile of festering excrement. How could anyone do the film any justice?, I mean, after the speal of terrible comic-film adaptions, how could they possibly make it work.
I was very glad to be wrong, obviously the film isn't perfect and you can nit-pick bits n' bobs, but it was pretty freaking cool.
Wish there was a bit more dialogue from the transformers, a bit more character comming through, but it really kicked arse, especially the massive fight at the end.
The film had to be directed towards fammily tpyes, hence the usual 'fleshy' bits, despite that I would reccomend anyone to go and see it for big robot action.

Don't know. I'll have to look out for that when I see it again, hopefully tomorrow.
One thing that kinda annoyed me a lot: Optimus looked like he'd be gangbanged by Pimp My Ride (the UK version, to boot). I think he would have been much cooler without all the bling and flash.

Well yeah, but since GM is helping to foot the production bill of the movie they can't have that now can they? Or maybe you missed the ironic gag when they were introducting the character. Besides, that initial chase scene with Bumblebee would have been too much like a Herbie movie. The new Camaro looks pretty awesome. They had the autobots parked outside the movie theatre (hollywood arclight) i saw it at... two words... win and god. I didn't even mind all the cheesy lines... there was a sort of ironic self awareness of the campiness of it all, and the little jab at Armageddon was a nice wink at the audience that the movie was *wink *wink not meant to be taken seriously. Lots of fun, very interesting CGI work, intricately detailed models, but imo I would have preferred something less insectoid looking, with cleaner lines... but I'm a fan of the japanese robot manga look. In any case, I'm looking forward to the sequels :)

I liked him better as the old camaro. I can accept that. The new camaro thing was just a shameless promotion. Same with Jazz, I thought he was like a porsche or something. Oh man now I wanna buy back all my transformers and play with them.

EA owns Porsche digital rights iirc... Lots of trouble to make that work. In the beginning, they drive by the Porsche dealer as a jab to that issue aswell, next to the Beetle thing :)
I was a little dissapointed at the GM thing, but the way they were introduced does make sense. They just happened to land near GM dealers :P
And besides, Prime is still not a GM truck, so there's a little solace to be found there :)
As for the clean lines - Apparently, the modellers actually thought of how all the parts would move during a transformation. The transformers you see in the movie could actually work, given the technology to do so, i suspect, and their new robot mode reflects that design choice.
They just grew up, and i'm happy for that. The people who watched Transformers 20 years ago are now 20 years older. If this wasn't taken into consideration we wouldn't have a live action movie, but an 80's cartoon sequel or something...

fantastic movie, I'll have to see it at least once more in the theaters. just wish they had it playing on the IMAX.
there was no way they could make it completely like the original characters, and after all thru all the different renditions of the tv series many characters changed several times and change is not a bad thing.
to me the best part of the movie was the comedic dialogue and character interactions. the "lubricating" part was hysterical. best made adult-ish intended version of a kids topic I've ever seen.

There's way too much unnecessary cornball Hollywood cheese in it for no good reason. If it wasn't about something I love for my childhood, I would just say it's total trash.

We all do but Lucas would sue claiming that the big giant flying death ball idea was his.
And Unicron should be voiced by either James Earl Jones ((needs to redeem himself for allowing Vader to go Emo)) or Sean Connery.

I've watched the movie yesterday and have to say im a bit disappointed. There where good things about it. Awsome fights and the extremly hot girl.
But thats where it ends for me. I realise that this movie is meant for pure entertainment and nothing else but still had alot of situations where the cheasy one liners where just too ... cheasy. Also alot the humor bits where too "fall on your butt" type, which of course is a matter of taste, but definatly not my cup of tea.
I thought the "acting" of the transformers were very poor. After being impressed by acting by virtual charactors in alot of films, this just doesnt cut it for me.
The story was as paperthin as they get, didnt keep me in suspense at all. All in all, if it hadnt been for cool special effects and hot girls, I would have walked out. 3/10

I usually wait for the DVD (I can't stand paying theater prices, especially when I have a nice home theater setup). I gave Spiderman 3 a chance, and it blew it. I wasn't planning on seeing Transformers so soon, but my friends wanted to see it, so I went.
As a disclaimer, I never watched the old series as a kid--mom said it was too violent (she said the same thing about the original Zelda *sigh* I was so deprived). I'm also a fan of Gundam (UC or any AU, except FC) and Japaneese mecha in general.
While silly in many ways, the mecha design and transformation sequences are stunning. The blatant product placement was nauseating (Mountain Dew, Panasonic, HP, GM, and GPX--GPX??! If you want a boombox, spend $10 more and buy yourself a Sony).
Everytime I saw the Solstice, I couldn't help think that it ought to be a Porsche (and remember, I have no emotional ties to the original). I just had a feeling that there's one less Porsche than there should be in this movie. But I think that about a lot of movies.
The new Camero shown is still only a concept car. This puts one in the odd position of suspending disbelief enough to allow for alien transforming robots, but not enough to believe a new Camero would happen to be passing by.
I'm surprised Hasbro let them get away with making the robots look like they do. Japanese mecha gets developed by toy companies all the time (like Bandai), and part of the requirements for the mecha designer is that the robot will work easily with plastic manufacturing so they can sell toys. Transformers has the additional requirement that the transformation sequence physically work so the toys can also work that way. Doing this well is what always set apart Transformers from other mecha.
But the design of these transformers would be impossible to work with a transforming toy. There's too many intricate details. A standard action figure would work, but who wants to buy a transformer action figure that doesn't transform?

I have yet to see the movie actually, but I'm content with the change in design. I saw some concept CGIs with the old 'boxy' look, and frankly it just didn't look good. To achieve any sense of realism they had to redesign the robots, and I for one am very pleased so far. But I have yet to see it :D
They had to change the voices as well. Frank Welkers voice had just aged too much for Bay & co to be satisfied with it. Chris Latta, the voice of Jazz among others died a couple of years ago IIRC. Only Peter Cullen in Optimus cuold be cast again.

This is just out in the UK and well...... I was left slightly disappointed in it.
The film never really grabbed my attention enough. The fight scenes at the end were a bit all over the place - I was expecting more of a slugfest between Megatron and Optimus Prime. Agree completely that the action scenes could have been better.
It's not bad - it's just not that great either. 5/10
Edit - Megan Fox was very hot, she reminded me a little of Tea Leoni (Bad Boys).
