Gonna go see it tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully. The way things are in this town on holidays (Los Angeles, 4th of July) I'll be lucky if I get tickets. But a DJ on the radio said that whatever you might think of Michael Bay or the somewhat unconventional styling of the robots, the second you hear Optimus Prime's voice you're 10 years old again, and that's when I set my mind to seeing it. Also I saw a preview on HBO this evening, and had to force myself to turn the channel and prevent myself from seeing too much of the movie... but it looks like it's made of win and God's right hand, wrapped in awesome.
Eventually I'm gonna try to catch it in Imax but you have to get tickets a day or two in advance for big movies like this.

the trailers for this look excellent, and i hope it is as good as it looks, nothing as sad as a film that looks great but they have just stuck all the good bits in a 30 second trailer :)

All you G1 fanbois - GET OVER YOURSELF.
This isn't the japanese-made cartoon from the mid eighties, it's a grown up movie with the best special effects i've ever seen (prolly topping LOTR:ROTK, slightly).
Yes, they changed the looks. So frickin what. All of them look better as they are now on the big screen than they would ahve if they'd have copied them 1 to 1 to 3d...
Do you really think that Megatron transforming from a 40 foot robot into a 1 foot gun would look good *and* real?
This is by far the best movie i've seen in ages. The only other movie that awed me like this was ROTK.
The *only* people who don't like Transformers from 2007 are 45 year old fat bearded virgins. And if you're ashamed, you should be...
This is definately my movie of the year, i think that will be the case for pretty much everyone who sees it :)

I just saw this movie as well. Pure awesomeness. They used the Original* voice actor for Optimus prime, which was pretty cool.
The ending of the final battle was a little ridiculous in the way it ended, and I didn't like how one of the robots got obliterated before it could even show off it's awesomeness, but overall there was lot's of crazy robot carnage.
Oh, the main chick sucks at acting. But her only real role in that movie was to look super hot, and she did that well.
Easily a 9/10 movie. ------------------------------------ I support the following changes:

Well believe it........
I was againest the change of the Transformers look early on. But after seeing the new designs and hearing Mr. Bay talk about why he changed them, they grew on me to the point now where I like them and wouldnt have wanted it any other way(if they looked like the G1 characters we know, imagine how aweful the movie would be).
As far as the characters go.....well BubbleBee and Optimus are nailed down, exactly the same from G1. The remaining Autobots arent conveyed like there G1 counterparts(meaning they dont get the screentime to do so).
As far as the Decepticons, all 100% pure badass, none of them are shy about attacking nor seem ignorant in thinking, though only 3 actually speak, the rest speak they're native tongue, they're still boss.
As far as Micheal Bay, Hes hit one out of the park imo. This feels nothing like Armageddon, BBI or II. I dont think anyone else could have made this movie and pulled it off.
Peter Cullen the original voice of OP returning for this movie, quite simply, breathtaking. And Hugo Weaving as Megatron, you cant really tell its him, and when hes on the building talking to Spike, perfectly protrays Megatron and his rational of thinking.
Mikaela(Megan Fox), isnt the best actress but she does enough and plays off Shia Lebouf phenomeally(sp?) well.
My gripe is the guy who plays Agent Simmons....what in the world were they thinking!!?
*EDIT* Yes the ending was a bit of a dissappointment, anyone remotely interested in Transformers as a child will know what i mean when you watch it.

It was pretty good. I haven't seen the original stuff so I don't really have anything to compare with, so I asked a friend who was with me how close to the original it was. The answer : "The names were the same".
He still thought it was good, but if you're a hardcore "omg I don't want them to change stuff" person then you'll probably not like it.

Wishes for the next movie:
1) Soundwave. Easily the coolest character in the entire Transformers world. He was supposed to be what Blackout or Frenzy were right now, but they scrapped that idea and kept him for the next movie(s). I hope he turns out ok :)
2) Unicron. I'd love to see him for real this time, not the messed up thing he was in the animated movie. Too bad Orson Welles is dead though, his voice for Unicron must have been the best voice over ever conceived for anything ever...
3) Hot Rod. I wonder what car he's gonna be... I hope they get over their GM-ness and make him a Murcielago (red murc, oh god...)
4) More screentime for the robots... I loved the movie, but that still doesn't really excuse the little screentime they got. The only one that gets barely enough screentime is Bumblebee, and he doesn't even talk through most of the movie :(
---Small spoiler!--- 5) Slightly better designed CG scenes. It's nitpicking, but some scenes simply weren't done good enough considering the human/robot interaction, something which is very apparent in the scene where Ironhide does his slomo spiral-rambo gun thing in the streets. Same with some of the Megatron/Prime fights. In other words, not enough blood squirting out of people :P ---End of small spoiler!---

I thought it was decent but not overly great. Alot of holes.
Personally it started off awesome but then in the middle the director decided to make it comical like having a 20ft robot pee on a human. I didn't really understand that part. They seemed to have completely forgot about a decepticon that they attacked earlier (for those who watched you know who) And yes the ending had a big hole with the government covering the whole thing up. I wont say how they did it but seriously, almost a dozen 20ft robots rampage through a major city destroying everything in site while attacking each other and the government covers it up? Aside from that, starscream was freakin awesome. And the same goes for alot of the battle scenes. I would still do a 7/10 but IMO there could have been improvements.

Edited by: F''nog on 06/07/2007 04:39:55 100% pure awesome. It's like I was 10 again.
There were a few problems:
1) Some of the CG scenes, as above, weren't as good as the others. This was mostly in the big fights and could have been a film problem.
2) Megatron's voice. Hugo Weaving was great, but the original voice would have been mindblowing.
3) Starscream's voice. Not the original. Need I say more?
The Autobots were done really well. They perfectly fit with their originals, and some of them really looked like the cartoon versions too. Jazz was my favorite of the minor ones. Spot on upgrade of the cartoon.
The Decepticons kinda got shafted. They weren't allowed to be developed and show off their personalities like in the show, so I hope this is rectified in the sequel. They were damn scary though.
I'm gonna have to see it again.
Edit - And for all the Bay haters out there, and I'm one of them, this is nothing like his other films. The camera actually stays focused on people for more than 2 seconds and doesn't whip around very much, or switch between angles unless actually necessary. I'm guessing we have Spielberg to thank for keeping him in check.
I used to get It. Then It changed. Now I don't even know what It is.

I was sceptical at first aswell about the voices, but after hearing Megatron speak for the first time that scepticism flew away. That voice fits the current Megatron much better than Frank Welker's does - The high, screamish voice was the kids version we saw over 20 years ago. This one has grown up, and i can't wait to see more of Megatron and Starscream...
Oh yes. Whoever thinks Mega T is down for the count should re-read the Hollywood rulebook :P

Being a transformers fan since it came out in the early 80' I thought the film was gonna be a big pile of festering excrement. How could anyone do the film any justice?, I mean, after the speal of terrible comic-film adaptions, how could they possibly make it work.
I was very glad to be wrong, obviously the film isn't perfect and you can nit-pick bits n' bobs, but it was pretty freaking cool.
Wish there was a bit more dialogue from the transformers, a bit more character comming through, but it really kicked arse, especially the massive fight at the end.
The film had to be directed towards fammily tpyes, hence the usual 'fleshy' bits, despite that I would reccomend anyone to go and see it for big robot action.

Don't know. I'll have to look out for that when I see it again, hopefully tomorrow.
One thing that kinda annoyed me a lot: Optimus looked like he'd be gangbanged by Pimp My Ride (the UK version, to boot). I think he would have been much cooler without all the bling and flash.

Well yeah, but since GM is helping to foot the production bill of the movie they can't have that now can they? Or maybe you missed the ironic gag when they were introducting the character. Besides, that initial chase scene with Bumblebee would have been too much like a Herbie movie. The new Camaro looks pretty awesome. They had the autobots parked outside the movie theatre (hollywood arclight) i saw it at... two words... win and god. I didn't even mind all the cheesy lines... there was a sort of ironic self awareness of the campiness of it all, and the little jab at Armageddon was a nice wink at the audience that the movie was *wink *wink not meant to be taken seriously. Lots of fun, very interesting CGI work, intricately detailed models, but imo I would have preferred something less insectoid looking, with cleaner lines... but I'm a fan of the japanese robot manga look. In any case, I'm looking forward to the sequels :)

EA owns Porsche digital rights iirc... Lots of trouble to make that work. In the beginning, they drive by the Porsche dealer as a jab to that issue aswell, next to the Beetle thing :)
I was a little dissapointed at the GM thing, but the way they were introduced does make sense. They just happened to land near GM dealers :P
And besides, Prime is still not a GM truck, so there's a little solace to be found there :)
As for the clean lines - Apparently, the modellers actually thought of how all the parts would move during a transformation. The transformers you see in the movie could actually work, given the technology to do so, i suspect, and their new robot mode reflects that design choice.
They just grew up, and i'm happy for that. The people who watched Transformers 20 years ago are now 20 years older. If this wasn't taken into consideration we wouldn't have a live action movie, but an 80's cartoon sequel or something...

fantastic movie, I'll have to see it at least once more in the theaters. just wish they had it playing on the IMAX.
there was no way they could make it completely like the original characters, and after all thru all the different renditions of the tv series many characters changed several times and change is not a bad thing.
to me the best part of the movie was the comedic dialogue and character interactions. the "lubricating" part was hysterical. best made adult-ish intended version of a kids topic I've ever seen.

There's way too much unnecessary cornball Hollywood cheese in it for no good reason. If it wasn't about something I love for my childhood, I would just say it's total trash.

And Unicron should be voiced by either James Earl Jones ((needs to redeem himself for allowing Vader to go Emo)) or Sean Connery.

I've watched the movie yesterday and have to say im a bit disappointed. There where good things about it. Awsome fights and the extremly hot girl.
But thats where it ends for me. I realise that this movie is meant for pure entertainment and nothing else but still had alot of situations where the cheasy one liners where just too ... cheasy. Also alot the humor bits where too "fall on your butt" type, which of course is a matter of taste, but definatly not my cup of tea.
I thought the "acting" of the transformers were very poor. After being impressed by acting by virtual charactors in alot of films, this just doesnt cut it for me.
The story was as paperthin as they get, didnt keep me in suspense at all. All in all, if it hadnt been for cool special effects and hot girls, I would have walked out. 3/10

I usually wait for the DVD (I can't stand paying theater prices, especially when I have a nice home theater setup). I gave Spiderman 3 a chance, and it blew it. I wasn't planning on seeing Transformers so soon, but my friends wanted to see it, so I went.
As a disclaimer, I never watched the old series as a kid--mom said it was too violent (she said the same thing about the original Zelda *sigh* I was so deprived). I'm also a fan of Gundam (UC or any AU, except FC) and Japaneese mecha in general.
While silly in many ways, the mecha design and transformation sequences are stunning. The blatant product placement was nauseating (Mountain Dew, Panasonic, HP, GM, and GPX--GPX??! If you want a boombox, spend $10 more and buy yourself a Sony).
Everytime I saw the Solstice, I couldn't help think that it ought to be a Porsche (and remember, I have no emotional ties to the original). I just had a feeling that there's one less Porsche than there should be in this movie. But I think that about a lot of movies.
The new Camero shown is still only a concept car. This puts one in the odd position of suspending disbelief enough to allow for alien transforming robots, but not enough to believe a new Camero would happen to be passing by.
I'm surprised Hasbro let them get away with making the robots look like they do. Japanese mecha gets developed by toy companies all the time (like Bandai), and part of the requirements for the mecha designer is that the robot will work easily with plastic manufacturing so they can sell toys. Transformers has the additional requirement that the transformation sequence physically work so the toys can also work that way. Doing this well is what always set apart Transformers from other mecha.
But the design of these transformers would be impossible to work with a transforming toy. There's too many intricate details. A standard action figure would work, but who wants to buy a transformer action figure that doesn't transform?

I have yet to see the movie actually, but I'm content with the change in design. I saw some concept CGIs with the old 'boxy' look, and frankly it just didn't look good. To achieve any sense of realism they had to redesign the robots, and I for one am very pleased so far. But I have yet to see it :D
They had to change the voices as well. Frank Welkers voice had just aged too much for Bay & co to be satisfied with it. Chris Latta, the voice of Jazz among others died a couple of years ago IIRC. Only Peter Cullen in Optimus cuold be cast again.

This is just out in the UK and well...... I was left slightly disappointed in it.
The film never really grabbed my attention enough. The fight scenes at the end were a bit all over the place - I was expecting more of a slugfest between Megatron and Optimus Prime. Agree completely that the action scenes could have been better.
It's not bad - it's just not that great either. 5/10
Edit - Megan Fox was very hot, she reminded me a little of Tea Leoni (Bad Boys).

I couldn't get into it because of the style of the robots. They were made up of so many tiny constantly moving parts that my eyes couldn't absorb it all so they looked like random metallic blobs to me.

No seriously, G1 fans like myself will always be hard to please, it was not a bad effort but could have been much better (there was not much interaction between the autobots and decepticons) and they all looked to similar. But the door was left open for sequels so i guess it will get better.

I took my 9 year old daughter to see the movie and she absolutely loved Transformers. She's never watched Transformers on TV before, and i think shes into them more then I am now. She even went and bought all the Autobot toys with the allowance she's saved up!
But she followed the story pretty well, even caught me up on what i missed the first time when i had to get her some more soda(missed 15 minutes bc of of those long lines).
We also took her to see Ratatouille the next week, which she liked but asked me when we were leaving if we could see Transformers again.
We ended up going 4 times to see Transformers, which was awesome because I used her as the reason why we should go see the movie so her mom wouldnt think im a complete dork.
Take him, I think he'll follow along fine and like the movie as well. |

I can help translate and tell him parts of the movie but I like the movie way to much to miss half due to translation and explaining business.
Although the plot ain't that hard; good robot, bad robot, puny human, funky bumblebee kicks ass.

Edited by: Nadija on 29/07/2007 23:01:58 Transformers.... wot can i say?? *takes a deep breath* IT WAS THE MOST AWESOME FILM I HAVE EVER FREAKING SEEN!!! I sat in the cinema for 2 1/2 staring with my jaw firmly glued 2 the floor!! The robots looked so cool, but for me Starscream was my fav... the scene where he took out those F22s insane!! I like the fact he also survived, where as most of his buddies got trashed (although i'm sure he didn't really care about megatron biting it) also someone mentioned that it was a shame starscreams voice wasn't the same as he original series, i agree with that too, unforuntely the guy who did stascreams voice in G1 died in the late 80s i think
Anyways back to the film... not only was there loads of action & metal grinding.. there was some comdey too, I mean u gotta expect some... its based on a cartoon! ok some of it was a just pure cheese, but my fav funny line was when sam's mum said "maybe we should call it sam's happy time" I fell off my chair
Only really bad part of the film was the ending credit song... linkin park?? i mean wtf was that about?? they needed something a bit more heavier!!
As for a sequal heres wot i'd like 2 see happen... Starscream to make a return, along with barricad & scorpnok (Don't really know wot became of them)... megatron 2 maybe get revived some how (hes not really dead, lol)... Soundwave, shockwave, the dinobots, hot rod & Ravage (a mechanical panther would look so awesome!) to make apperances... & lastly that fragment of the allspark to be a part of the plot...
/me puts in an application 2 be 1 of the sequal's writers
lastly I am a big G1 fan & i really wish some of the other G1 fans would stop living in the 1980's & stop complaing about how the new transformers look!!

Saw it some time ago, my only complaint is that the transformers did indeed get alittle on-screen.
But for next? I'd love to see Shockwave, Soundwave and the mini-cassettes, Insecticons (esp. Bombshell with his icky Cerebro shells!), Predacons and a rather unknown decepticon named Reflector.

Saw it, loved it and am probably gonna go see it again very soon.
I only had a couple of small gripes. The first is most of the decepticons barely got any screen time, no sooner were a couple in than they had been killed off. The other was some of the fight sequences were a little hard to follow and were over very quickly.
These were pretty minor things though and didn't spoil the movie for me, I loved its humor and that the transformers all had fairly distinct personalities (must admit I has half expecting them to be overly serious all the time).
5/5 from me

I can't seriously hold any gripes about the movie.
I loved the make-over they got huge blocky transformers from the original would have sucked. The CGI used was the most impressive I have ever seen. Which goes a long way to explain why they didnt get as much screen time. All that CGI takes time.
The human characters were forgettable - I hated the Sector7 thing - You create an 'Above Top Secret' segment of the goverenment they have the most piddle p*** ants run it.
There was some bad editing. Like when the boy gets up in the morning and his cars back. He runs away from it and bumps into the decepticon. They jump into bumblebee and make there escape cue rock music then nightfall - eh wtf what happened to the last 10hours! There were a few really obvious instances of that that grated a little.
The plot holes annoyed me a little too. **spoiler**
Megatron apparently wanted to use the Spark to convert human technology to make a new army. When Megatron landed on Earth there was no human technology, Human technology was apparently reverse engineered from him when they found him a 1000 years later. paradox!
meh! I really enjoyed the movie it just annoys me when they cant make a simple plot line to house the awesomeness without it crumbling apart 90minutes later. Did we really need all that crap about glasses and silly 'ultra' hacker able to ***** 'super' codes from there crappy PC's.
It was awesome but could have been so much more. 8/10

Saw it on my own first time round then went back with the kids a couple of days later.
Sadly, as a 54 year old, Transformers were *after* my time but I thought the film was great. I described it to a friend as "Black Hawk Down" meets "American Pie" with giant manga robots
Some great one-liners of which my favourite is still:
"Mikaela: I'll drive, you shoot!"
And, yeah, Megan Fox is a babe - even if she is young enough to be my grand-daughter

Why do people love this film so much?
Ok the cgi is awesome, Megan fox is hot but so what if you wanna see hot women just get a p*rno ffs.
The movie started ok but the battle scenes were out of control it was hard to see what was going on and confusing in the battle in the city who was who etc example when megatron ripped jazz in half I knew an autobot had been killed but at the time I no idea which 1. The Characters apart from bubble bee and maybe optimus were given no personality. It felt unfinished example Megatron says 'you failed me for the last time' to starstreak and then cuts away to another scene and nothing happens wtf.
It was a big ebay advert and my bum hurt on the uncomfortable seat after 2 1/2 hours.
Conclusion very disappointingly another Sci-Fi classic like War of the Worlds destroyed by bad directing.
I feel a maybe in the minority on this one and sure its great for a kid with cool robots and explosions I thought it was sh*t but that only my opinion.

I feel the same way, its was ok, but in the same WatW was OK.
Also I think there was something which was inaccurate in the film about seeing them on Mars via the Beagle 2 lander.
For one, it wasn't a Nasa JPL or US led mission, mission control was at Jodrell Bank in England, and it was an ESA led mission.

Just got back from seeing it and have to say it was OK. Yes the fx were superb, but thats to be expect nowadays. There was a little too much slapstick humour for me but have to say I did laugh a lot.
The female lead(s) were lookable atable and I dare say the male leads would have womens hearts a flutter.
But.....
It was one huge damn advert for car companies and other merchandise. Is this the way the summer blockbusters are going now?
Shame as that grated on me. I dare say in the US where advertising is a lot more ott than the UK it's easier to ignore, but for me it annoyed me enough to lower my score for the film.
6/10 (without the ott advertising 7.5/10) __________________________________

this news makes me hard. i've been telling anybody who'll listen that they should do a sequal featuring... yes... the dinobots, constructacons and soundwave who is the coolest thing since, um, anything.
The deceptacons would have crushed the autobots years ago if soundwave was in charge.
