Originally by: Akita T First off, they're only usable in 0.0, and really, how much "small gang" warfare goes on "out there" nowadays ?
A reasonably tanked ship can survive more than a couple of bomb blasts, especially armor-tanked ships (extenders and shield rigs increase sig, which increase bomb damage in a bad way)... heck, I can bet you can easily survive 3, maybe even 4 bombs in an AF or a plated cruiser, and more in a properly tanked BS. That is, assuming the bomber gang can lock you down in the first place and you don't just warp off. Bombers need to either commit sepukku (if the warpout denial is an area-of-effect one) or be able to warp out themselves (in which case, most your gang should be able to do the same, only catching a few slow ships). The only good uses I can see for bombs is "strafing runs" by friendly SBs (decloak, drop, recloak) on the "edges" of a bubbled enemy blob or somesuch, and not even that sounds too feasable right about now.
The great weapon we were given is, for all intents and purposes, practically useless, slowly but surely pre-nerfed into oblivion before it went live on TQ. They might un-nerf it, they might not, due to some misperceived imbalance.
Oh well, fair enough, if nobody uses them... then, well, nobody uses them, and that's it. Bonus style points for the first commanders that DO manage to find a good use for them though.
Well, I certainly wouldn't want them to become weapons capable of insta-popping anything (and I imagine they were designed this way for specifically this reason). Can you imagine anything more GOD DAMNED ANNOYING than sitting still, space is empty and deserted, then suddenly you explode and some SB pilot types "lol" in local and warps off. Far from a fun addition.
What they should be is a way of severely damaging ANY craft, without destroying it. Effectively, say, a 50% of HP in one bomb, then 50% of the remainder in the next (25%) etc. That way, their main use will be in softening up fleets, for a main attack. Imainge jumping in to a fleet battle and suddenly finding 5 of your BS's that were humping each other are down 50% of their HP. Brutal stuff.
In other words, I think the concept of bombs is absolutely perfect (no need for a complete redesign), but the balancing may need to be tweaked with to give them a useful role. --------
