To me, having an alt seems a clumsy arrangement.
Having the one character feels more natural and convenient.
Is it possible to do missions, ratting, or PvPing etc. effectively without alts?

I've used my current alt (alt character, only have one account) _once_ when I had to acquire some stuff from gallente space...
I've been soloing l4 missions for ages and it works just fine... as for ratting or pvp; ask someone else.

Most people just use their same account alts to camp different markets to do price checks.

Yes, but not as effectively as you could with alts... for instance, if you had a mining character, but no alts, you could fit a Hulk up with t2 cargo expanders and cargo rigs, and mine in high sec just for the extra safety.
If you had an alt, you could drop those expanders for mining laser upgrades and be far more effective, haul with your alt, and never stop mining until all the roids are gone. You'd make more money, but it would take both more attention and more real life money.
Both are viable in profit, and it's a personal question as to how you prefer to play / pay.

You dont need alts. They are merely a convenience and I would maybe get one if I played all day long, but I dont.

Some things are actually harder with an alt; I gave up on the concept when I was running a brokerage business, because I wanted people to be able to contact me reliably.

It is possible. My issue is I dont like ratting, missioning, mining, or stealing...so I need an alt(s) of sorts.

You only need an alt if your main is an ebil pirate and can't get into Jita to buy ebil pirate toys. Now that Privateers have been nerfed anyway.

IMO, Eve is much more immersive and fun playing without an alt. As for profits, no doubt you will make much more with a second account. If I had my way, alts would be removed - 1 char per account. This would solve many problems the games has and also make each character accountable for his acts - which would make the game more fun.

I make 10 mil an hour
this is fine with me
how do I do it?
well you get friends
you live in low sec
and you run 10 quality agents lvl 4 missions with friends
4 lvl 4 missions an hour with 2 other friends
plus my super salvager
I use to make 6 mil an hour with friends but with the new share rewards system I get an extra 4 mil!
and then every week I sell my salvage for 20 mil to the corp :)
and only playing 3 days out of the week like normal for 4 hours a day yuo cn see how much I make with only one account
by the way I don't anything bigger than a carrier in my hanger
I'm happy with my throw away badass battlecruisers and t2 frigates

Well i ran L4's solo and could do them solo nps... now i have an alt account and still run L4's just more then twice as fast and salvaging is a lot easier too cuz my other char can either fly a 2nd sally or a speedhauler during the salvage phase.
This is good cuz.. well.. I'm a lazy git and don't make a lot of money because of that
