Not true at all.
Cats respond to their name the same way a person responds to hearing something banging around behind them. They look, if something catches there attention, in all my experience with cats they never respond to anything unless they want attention or food.

Thats not my experience with cats at all.
Example: My cat is sleeping in a ball 15 feet away. While directly speaking its way will talk with it, no response. Say its name though and it gives a response. Varied responses, sure, but responses.
Example: Saying the phrase: "Hair-brushed?" will get an automatic excited response from one of my cats. Where-as saying "i'm going to comb your hair" gets nothing. The cat KNOWS when i say "Hair-brushed" its about to get something it wants. It really wants. This is not a every day event either. There is no schedule to it. It doesn't know when its coming. (and no, I dont already have a comb in my hand when I say it)
I really could give alot more examples, but why? I doubt I'll get you to believe cats can understand words, just as you won't get me to believe cats cant understand words.

Edited by: Sertan Deras on 11/07/2007 15:38:54 Pets name themselves if you let them. When we got our Pembroke Welsh Corgi, we weren't sure what to name him so we didn't for a couple of days. Well, after the first day, we noticed he sort of looked like a little bear, with the way his ears stuck up, and his little nose. So we started calling him Kodiak, which eventually just got shortened to Kodi. Now we call him any number of things from "Kodi-bear", to "Kodi-boo", to "Bubba-bear", to "Booby", to just about any endearing and sickeningly sweet thing you can think of to call a dog.
Our cats we sort of "force" named, and we have regretted it over the years. We wanted to name them Calvin and Hobbes, but my sister, in all her wisdom, named her cat Fergie, so we ended up with Fergie and Hobbes, which makes little to no sense. If we had waited, I would have definitely named them something more akin to their personalities. So, I've learned my lesson. Observe your new pet for a week or so, it will name itself.
Also, anyone who thinks animals don't understand words, especially their names, is full of crap. Cats understand their names just fine, they simply choose to ignore you most of the time. My dog understands phrases in English he shouldn't understand and has never been taught. He can be sitting in the living room with me, and I can say "Go see mommy", and he will seek out my wife wherever she is in the house. I've never trained him to do this, he just picked up on it. When I was teaching him to "speak", I used the command "talk" instead, "Kodi talk". He learned it in five minutes, then, much to our surprise, when I switched the command to "speak", to fool him, he still did it. How did he know that speak and talk were the same command? I have no clue, but he did, and to this day will bark to both. Dogs and cats are far more intuitive than people give them credit for.

Then we have the dog which I name Kaje (Ka-gee). This name is usually pronounced as Cage which was the name of a really good friend. In my pronouncication however I'm told that it means symbol in japanese but I haven't been able to verify this.
I'm not really an expert, but it could mean one of two things: Kaji (kah gee) is a japanese name. Kage (kah gaay) means "Shadow" in japanese.
That would work for him too. There isn't a moment when he isn't following right behind me.

we rescued one kitten from a box full of them being given away on a rainy day, got her home with a cat we had inherited (Pussa). Couldn't for the life of us decide on a name so was referred to as the fluffy one. so ended up being called The Fluffy (not just any fluffy, but The Fluffy) the vets never seemed to get the joke.
The Fluffy after ignoring the catfood
so Pussa moves out and finds a new owner, and some time later we get two kittens from a couple who rescued a malnourished stray cat that also happened to be pregnant. the male we called Rogi from the galactic milieu series by Julian May, a neutered male. The female was called Leona after Leona Ozaki in the dominion tank police comic.
most recent aquisistion was Ambrose, just cos i liked the name.
