I have schnauzers, so I usually named them after generals. For example, my first schnauzer was Patton, next one will be Montgomery - Monty.
That is how we did it.

My stepsister named our cat Malaki but we just call him meowie. dont know why she named him that though.
Then we have the dog which I name Kaje (Ka-gee). This name is usually pronounced as Cage which was the name of a really good friend. In my pronouncication however I'm told that it means symbol in japanese but I haven't been able to verify this.
Then the horses:
Charlie - or Charliehorse when he gets in his mood and tries to bite legs
Black Sundae - well.....he's black and every one likes him
Popsicle - He was already named this when we got him but I'm thinking it's cause he's a slick one that can seem to get out of any enclosure.
Doc - Also already named
Misty - another prename and the grandma of Charlie
Cheyenne - We mostly call her Shy though. She's a wild mustang and is still quite skittish around people. She mostly hangs around misty.
Sizzle - Cause he's 17 hands tall and has a short temper with the rest of the pack when they get outta line.

Watch and listen to them for a week or so. You will find thier name. Someone had abandoned a cat in front of our country store. I took it in as it would have been run over if I had not. During the first week i noticed that he did not have a proper meow. all he did were these little squeeking noises, so he earned the name Squeeker.
So just watch it and it will let you know what its name is.

Felix is an obvious name for a cat (especially if it's black and white). We have a middle aged female called Felix, and a young (2 year old) called Kato (after the karate guy in the Pink Panther movies). I named her Kato because, as a kitten, she kept attacking me arbitrarily. It got quite frightening sometimes. She's older now and has been neutered. She's quite loving at times although she still does attack me randomly on occasions (but nowhere near as much as she used to).
OMG! Some orange text. It must be important.

My cat had had a pretty rough life before I took her in and had only been called "Girl" by her owner who really didn't care about her at all. I didn't consider that to be a real name and she did deserve a real name. I tried lots of names over a week or so, mostly inspired by sci-fi characters. One day I tried the name Becca (after Beka in Andromeda) and she looked up at me, after that her name has been Becca. --- My other ship is a Reaper

Cats respond to their name the same way a person responds to hearing something banging around behind them. They look, if something catches there attention, in all my experience with cats they never respond to anything unless they want attention or food.

Thats not my experience with cats at all.
Example: My cat is sleeping in a ball 15 feet away. While directly speaking its way will talk with it, no response. Say its name though and it gives a response. Varied responses, sure, but responses.
Example: Saying the phrase: "Hair-brushed?" will get an automatic excited response from one of my cats. Where-as saying "i'm going to comb your hair" gets nothing. The cat KNOWS when i say "Hair-brushed" its about to get something it wants. It really wants. This is not a every day event either. There is no schedule to it. It doesn't know when its coming. (and no, I dont already have a comb in my hand when I say it)
I really could give alot more examples, but why? I doubt I'll get you to believe cats can understand words, just as you won't get me to believe cats cant understand words.

Edited by: Sertan Deras on 11/07/2007 15:38:54 Pets name themselves if you let them. When we got our Pembroke Welsh Corgi, we weren't sure what to name him so we didn't for a couple of days. Well, after the first day, we noticed he sort of looked like a little bear, with the way his ears stuck up, and his little nose. So we started calling him Kodiak, which eventually just got shortened to Kodi. Now we call him any number of things from "Kodi-bear", to "Kodi-boo", to "Bubba-bear", to "Booby", to just about any endearing and sickeningly sweet thing you can think of to call a dog.
Our cats we sort of "force" named, and we have regretted it over the years. We wanted to name them Calvin and Hobbes, but my sister, in all her wisdom, named her cat Fergie, so we ended up with Fergie and Hobbes, which makes little to no sense. If we had waited, I would have definitely named them something more akin to their personalities. So, I've learned my lesson. Observe your new pet for a week or so, it will name itself.
Also, anyone who thinks animals don't understand words, especially their names, is full of crap. Cats understand their names just fine, they simply choose to ignore you most of the time. My dog understands phrases in English he shouldn't understand and has never been taught. He can be sitting in the living room with me, and I can say "Go see mommy", and he will seek out my wife wherever she is in the house. I've never trained him to do this, he just picked up on it. When I was teaching him to "speak", I used the command "talk" instead, "Kodi talk". He learned it in five minutes, then, much to our surprise, when I switched the command to "speak", to fool him, he still did it. How did he know that speak and talk were the same command? I have no clue, but he did, and to this day will bark to both. Dogs and cats are far more intuitive than people give them credit for.

we rescued one kitten from a box full of them being given away on a rainy day, got her home with a cat we had inherited (Pussa). Couldn't for the life of us decide on a name so was referred to as the fluffy one. so ended up being called The Fluffy (not just any fluffy, but The Fluffy) the vets never seemed to get the joke.
The Fluffy after ignoring the catfood
so Pussa moves out and finds a new owner, and some time later we get two kittens from a couple who rescued a malnourished stray cat that also happened to be pregnant. the male we called Rogi from the galactic milieu series by Julian May, a neutered male. The female was called Leona after Leona Ozaki in the dominion tank police comic.
most recent aquisistion was Ambrose, just cos i liked the name.

Use my naming system
I go grab one of my "Daemon Index", "Dictionary of Monsters" or "insert_generic_15thcentury_grimoire_reprinted_in_mass_paperback" book and scan randomly, when I end up with names like Zrratolux the Destroyer, Q'galXortho the Usurper, Tremantikalisarx the Ravager, Chroktlo the Defiler , Zarithrankaxus the Reaver I pick the one that picks my fancy the most. It's good having "Occult Knowledge Grimoire" paperbooks worth 5$ each. They are a treasure throve of names, in case of not having them, default to 1st. Edition AD&D Monster Manual/Fiends Folio wich are a good source too. Failing all that having a "Shubby" (Shub-Niggurath), "Nyarlo" (Nyarlathotep) "Azat" (Azathoth), or "Kutuli" (Chtulhu) as a pet name is good for their morale. Invest your pet with the power of ancient preadamic gods or babylonic/assirian demons, makes them hardy and tough.
Pd: You can also use famous names of ancient Antinomists or Heretics burned at the stake, fun for the family too!!!
