I just watched the introduction story again, and it left me thinking. Would it make a good story for a movie? Not only 1 movie, but multiple movies. Before the 'Firefly Fanatics' start getting excited or start condeming the idea because of Firefly and other such premises. I have to hand it to CCP, they created an excellent back-story which is usually quite rare in the gaming world. Not to mention the fact that they could probably afford to make one. If you haven't watched the intro yet, do so. If there ever were to be a movie of EVE, who would you like to be involved in order to make sure it matches the game's reputation?
Now, for those that are wondering what the heck next year's "Ender's Game" movie has to do with EVE/CCP aside from the idea of space-age movies. For those that know the story, wouldn't you think CCP and the EVE Developing team would be ideal candidates for creating the simulation 'games' that eventually end with Ender defeating the "buggers"? The way my imagination drew the picture while I was reading it, it really resembled what EVE is.
Anyways, even if CCP has the money to put the introduction story to the big-screen, I sincerely hope they don't. Because as a fellow corp-mate of mine put it: "The week after the premiere: Status: You are in queue #3,645,439." Plus, can you imagine what Jita would be like with 10's or even 100's of thousands of people? HAH!

Dear Devs: Can you please commission a new movie to be made for the introduction movie, something that has more than just moving still pictures? Same story can apply, since its great, but show some footage and action please.
Thank you.
Please Help me, YOU could be next!

Meh, I quite like the intro movie as it is. First time I saw it I found it very intriguing, and I wanted to see more. ------ --Don't get saucy with me Bernaise!-- |

I <3 Asimov but hate the Foundation series... and these days you can't even find proper SF books anymore, it's all dragon/fantasy/LOTR clones, bah!

It's good, but I think they need a voice actor who can say "s" properly, and not something between "th" and "s"... It's annoying

Arthur C Clarke. I remember reading an Alan Dean Foster book and he made one comment that made me chuckle. As the main character landed on a planet he mentions that he hated to go to this one in particular because of the smell. I realised "Of course!" no planet would have the same air compostion, every single one of them would smell different, just like when you enter someone elses home.

My most recent discovery is Iain Banks, and his Culture books. Highly recommended. You might find yourself naming your ships the way he does. - Got grief?

Try Charles Stross, Accelerando, blew my mind
Also I've been reading some of the old classics that were re-issued recently and Earth Abides struck me as a great book.
Enders Game was ok, I am suprised they made it into a movie though
For a great space opera romp Peter Hamilton has been hard to beat lately

Keep meaning to check if there is a Conrad Mazian or Signy Mallory in game and if I ever wind up flying a carrier in EVE it's just got to be the "ECS Norway"

The funny thing about Ender's Game is that it's the start of a series most people have never read the entirety of, and there are other books in the series that are better and deeper (I am a fan of Speaker for the Dead myself). Ender's Game is a great book, but it's really just the tip of that stories iceberg.

Agreed.
Interestingly enough, Ender's Game is used as an example of how to lead and not to lead at military academies. Too bad the fact that the Enemy's gate is down doesn't apply quite yet. ------------ ULTIMATE LAG SOLUTION IBTL! IBDS/DC! IBTC! 1st in a BoB post! And other such forum tom-foolery. |

My favourite is 'Jane', the entity that was accidentally created because of the philotic connections of faster-than-light communication. Orson Scott Card has a big influence on the production of the movie, so who knows, if Ender's Game works out, they may make the others into movies as well.
The movie is supposed to combine "Ender's Game" and "Ender's Shadow"...which doesn't sound half bad to me.

Funny... I have never thought Frank Herbert's Dune series as scifi book... more like fantasy book. (Too many mystical-magical elements.)
WebScription Ebooks have lot's of cheap and also free (check free library section) scifi and fantasy e-books that you can read when flying your freighter from Jita to some far system...
For example David Weber's "In Fury Burn" is nice brutal militaristic scifi book with "some" fantasy elements (Weber's Honorverse books are also similar - without fantasy elements). Weber definately is not Shakespeare, but his books are pretty entertaining and time used to reading Weber's book, is way better used than watching TV "entertaiment" for simpletons. Of course, I would rather use my time for real hard core scifi books that would be also entertaining...

In my oppinion, the 5 best sci-fi authors of all time (I agree with Dune being fantasy, so is The Left Hand of Darkness, etc):
1) Asimov - Foundation, Robot series, nuff' said
2) William Gibson - I am shocked no one has mentioned Neuromancer
3) Arthur C. Clarke - The Rama series, Childhoods End, 2001.... someof the most classic sci-fi in existence.
4) Neil Stephenson - Snow Crash and The Diamond Age were two of the most fun, interesting, sci-fi novels I ever read.
5) Aldous Huxley - Brave New World, one of the most important, relevant and insightful books ever written let alone of the sci-fi genre....
Honorable mention: George Orwell for 1984

I wouldn't call 1984 Sci-Fi, I would call it non-fiction (which, I guess is the aim of most sci-fi, to become non-fiction :P).

Quote: Award-winning science fiction author Michael Swanwick has said: "Gene Wolfe is the greatest writer in the English language alive today. Let me repeat that: Gene Wolfe is the greatest writer in the English language alive today! I mean it. Shakespeare was a better stylist, Melville was more important to American letters, and Charles ****ens had a defter hand at creating characters. But among living writers, there is nobody who can even approach Gene Wolfe for brilliance of prose, clarity of thought, and depth in meaning."

Yah, was kind of thoughtless of 'em. Personally I found Speaker for the Dead to be a more engrossing read and more worthy of praise but for sure if you want something to zip through during a flight Ender's Game is good. The 'alternate' Ender's Shadow is fascinating. Very clever.
Sadly the rest of the series just got too weird for me. -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

Yah, one of my all time favourites simply because of the way it conveys the size of the galaxy. The sequel (if it isn't a prequel) A Darkness in the Sky is equally brilliant.
But my all time favourite would have to be a C J Cherryh novel. Probably Downbelow Station. -- (Battle hardened industrialist)
