since Eve is dependant on DirectX 9 its a bit more than compiling a binary. You'll more likely see Transgameing working out the DirectX 9 support than an actual client.

Eve is using Python (for the UI at least) (as you see in the many exception in the log files) Python is an open source interpreter. (which seems to quite slow) It should be available on Linux.
Howevery, before a Linux port I would want to see a fast Windows implementation first.

Yah, python is damn slow.. even slower than java :). Atleast for doing stuff like that.. Gets a bit iffy using 100% Microsoft stuff.. I say use the mSQL server cluster, but rewrite the application servers in something faster than python.. like C++ maybe? :P (They probably already do tho) --

Stackless Python is not Python, just like C++ is not C.

Please, the Eve client isn't running exclusively on Python (stackless or not). All "behaviours" are implemented using stackless, but the core is C++.
btw - if they made the client codebase open source, you'd see a linux version in no-time.

And hacked clients as well, which is why it WON'T be open source. Get a brain. It ain't over till the fat lady falls on ya!

Edited by: babyblue on 26/01/2004 16:23:07 Get a brain yourself matey. Just because its "open source", doesn't mean that it has to contain cheats/hacks. The Linux Kernel itself has many, many people submitting code for it but only a few people deciding what code goes in.
Do you know anything about Open Source at all?

He means, if the source of the client is open everyone can make his own personal modifications to it and can use server exploits more easily.
Well, that probably happens anyway. And currently these people are a closed group, not sharing information to outsiders.
Open source might bring up all these server exploits to the public and so the server can be fixed. However, there might be design issues that can not be fixed at all. So it might be even worse for honest player in the end.

Put it this way, CCP would need to manage this in the right way. You don't need to say "open-source the whole client", you can, say, publish requirements contracts for certain groups of modules within the game. The UI for instance, or the gfx engine (which, I see, are different DLLs in any case). The core logic, which is much more suspect from an open source perspective, does not need to be published at all.

I'm afraid this isn't really a topic for patch review - this forum is intended for the discussion and review of test patches and new features on the live server.
Keep in mind that this sort of thing has been discussed before on the forums, you may be able to turn up many of the previous arguments for and against by using the user-created search engine that is linked on eve-i.com.
