I honestly don't understand the desire to spoil a story for people that I have seen in the lead up to this book. Of course I understand the irritation that comes from fanboy fever, but there is a wide audience for these books. Hell, I even refused to read them until they were one of the few English fantasy books I could get my hands on while working in Dresden, Germany for a couple of months. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that they are enjoyable reads. It was also a welcome relief after reading Perdito street station, nothing like bleak and depressing reading while you are in a student building in the ex-GDR in a city that is legendary for it's firebombing. Justifying spoiling a book by "they are just children's books" is simply saying that you are a bully who likes to take candy from children. Saying that good stories will hold up even if you know the ending is intellectually feeble as a lot of the enjoyment of many stories is the suspense regarding an outcome, especially a conflict. maybe it's the cool to hate thing, self aggrandizement based on a social reinforcement, wow, you're so cool, you spoiled that potter fanboys enjoyment, yeah, you rock. a couple of things, the hook on the first page of chapter one, book one is excellently written. Even if you say that it is a children's story, it doesn't stop that piece of writing being good. pick it up and imagine reading it to your eight year old niece or nephew. the next is that the plots mature with the main characters, emotional complexity increases. Sure potter become a whiny sniveling pratt when he is 14 but every goddamn teenager is. I have low expectations of film adaptations and the Potter films are a mixed bag to say the least. I was pleasantly surprised by this last film, I certainly wouldn't take anyone to it that was under 12. It is not happy, and the repeated themes of death and suffering along with deliberate torture of children make me worry that hollywood will kneejerk and make the next film be full of dancing, singing ewoks. Also the mage battle that comprises the last 15 mins of the film is by far the best i have ever seen. btw, I don't believe the potter series is the best fantasy written, no that is reserved for Steven Erickson's Malazan books of the fallen. oh dear, i seem to have written a rant. well at least, I feel better.

I love Stargate, I play EVE, I built my own computer, but I cant choose between Picard and Kirk, I want anime (half thanks to my ex to introduced me to alot of good ones) but I despise DBZ, Pokemon and PowerRangers because those shows have had their golden ages but the companies wont let them DIE and fade away, and instead keep renewing them, adding things and making them MORE Idiotic but I read Harry Potter just because Im bored and sometimes I need a book to read. my ex is a lil big fan of HP, but meh. She doesnt start believing shes a wizard and pretends she can go to Hogwarts as a few crazies do. Though I think every HP book should be replaced by a nice book called Timeline. Awesome book
