Been playing for about 2 months now and lost.
I can't decide what career I want. I would like to PVP but like to do missions, wouldn't mind mining and producing stuff.
If i don't play pvp, is there a point to playing a game you pay a lot for ?
Why do people play eve without playing pvp ?
I'm a carebear at the moment because the risk of losing a ships is too much for me to keep replacing.
How do you move from carebear to 0.0 life without losing ships all the time.

Most people probably do a little bit of everything. And all it takes to pvp is a tech 1 frigate and some balls. :)

Flying what you can't afford to lose -- and subsequently losing it -- is probably the #1 soul crushing thing to happen to newer players. Sounds like you've got the right idea so far by taking it easy while you learn the ropes.
As for the last question, really if you want to do that fast fast fast, your best chance is by joining a corp already active in 0.0.
As to why people play EVE without doing PVP, there's two thoughts to that. 1) all of EVE is PVP (mission running even, markets, etc). 2) Not everyone enjoys the same aspects about MMOs, some like to munch roids, some like to build, some like to blow/hack stuff up.

As far as i'm concerned nope, but i'm sure there will be those who argue. Also missions running and PVP require similer skills, but entirely different mentallities.
Also nobody should be a cearbear because they're afraid of losing their ship. FLY A CHEAPER SHIP! It's that simple. Also don't go into 0.0 alone because you'll get your ass handed to you on a silver plate. Find a good 0.0 or pirate corp and learn from them. ________________

Hope some of this helps...
Why play without pvp?
1. According to Ovuer even trading on market is "pvp". (I'd even say in a more abstract way making your own ammo etc could be the same, you don't need to buy it so you're denying someone a sale. But thats just extending the arguement.)
2. They like EVE enough to pay for it, for whatever reason. My main reason is the style of skill building suits me, plus I know several people in rl and from online who play. Therefore I can play a game and keep up with mates. All with nice sci-fi backdrop.
I think of the money issue in this way, if I didnt play EVE, what would I spend the money on and would it be as much or more fun. So far EVE keeps winning.
Haven't a clue about 0.0, but the aim of myself and my partner has been making our chars a good team, able to do most things between us.

Depends what you enjoy in the game. Some people like PvP combat, others get more of a kick empire building. Myself I am a trader and minor producer, explorer and mission runner. This keeps me in isk to buy cool new ships and stuff. (I'm a bit of a hoarder).
It's always been my aim to make wealth creation fairly passive so i can spend less time missioning and more time on PvP combat. It's taken me almost 2 years ... but then I have blown a lot of isk on fancy ships to decorate my hangers.

First of all, carebear is more of a state of mind than a career choice or if you're in high-sec verses 0.0. Don't let the epeen'ers confuse you on this point. They want to try to cast anyone who doesn't spend 23/7 in a PvP set-up orbiting a station waiting for glorious 1v1 combat lesser than they. You also need to keep in mind that most of the guys who talk down like that will sit at a gate in a battleship with their smartbombs turned on, finger over the cloak button in case anything bigger than a frigate shows up.
Living out in 0.0 and making isk requires you to do a little bit of everything really. Being a combat oriented character is a bit more efficient because you can make a decent amount of isk ratting. But miners and builders can make a lot out there too.
Eve is, at its core, a PvP game. If that's trying to out compete people on the market, find a lucrative trade route, get a better researched BPO to make BPCs from to sell, or if it's just blowing people up. It's all PvP.
Two months in, you still need to do some skill training, and you still need to work on learning the game mechanics. If you're not in a corp yet, I think you need to seriously look at finding a good corporation. I can't help you with that, I really don't know what corps are good. My advice, however, is to avoid the ones that make themselves sound awesome in a forum but when you get there they don't have many people online, they don't talk to each other, and they don't do anything together -- I just described probably 90% of the corps in Eve. Take your time in find a corp. Look for one that's a good fit for you.

The last time I was in 0.3 sec a gate camper destroyed my destroyer in 3 shots, if that is the type of enemy i will be meeting all the time what kind of ship do i need ? a frigate would be killed as easy surely ?

Find a good corp is the first step.
The "problem" you're having is actually a great feature, the freedom to do whatever you want Just try everything and do whatever you feel like. A lot of ppl mine/rat/mission run to make isk for a few days/weeks and then PVP till they're broke again.
The clever ones find ways to make passive income to fund their PVP addiction...trading for example. _______________

Fair enough, i'll have to plod on for now skill up and learn more.
Currently saving up for a Drake and will have the skills to fly it too, I could buy a ferox now but apparently the Drake is better for lvl 3 mission running.
I got a Caracal atm but it can't take on 3 BC's usually found in lvl 3 missions.

In my opinion, if pvp is one of your goals, then hoarding up huge amounts of isk for a year or 2 seems to be waisting valuable experience time. Thanks to the upgraded BC's, ,frigates with 3 mids slots, interceptors and much cheaper tech 2 mods, your pvp ready almost upon character creation. Your body/presence alone makes you almost immediately valuable to some corps. Most 0.0 corps I know allow you (outside of war or alliance ops)to go back to empire to do mission. Some regions have 0.0. agents if you don't want to travel that far. Having a lot of isk doesn't make you a better pvp'er. Experience does.
My recomendation is stay in empire till you can fly that BC and can do missions effectively then start looking for a corp that will let you do all the things you listed.

You can't move from a carebear existance to a pvp life without losing ships. Indeed, you can't have a pvp life without losing ships; PVPers lose ships and they get podded, and they have to learn to cope with that if they're going to keep PVPing.
That said, there are ways you can minimise the number of ships you have to lose. I think Agony's classes do a pretty good job of helping people to have the skills and confidence to operate in 0.0. My limited experience with other PVP corps says that most of them will make some kind of effort to do the same; the thing that makes Agony unique at the moment is that we are the only corp that will teach non-members.
Me, I PVP, I run missions, I trade, I manufacture, and I research. One of the best things about EVE is that you don't have to choose one of these things and exclude the others.

The frigate is the most PVP-survivable tech1 ship class in the game. (The interceptor is the most survivable class) It is almost impossible to kill a frigate pilot who doesn't want to fight and who doesn't make any mistakes. Destroyers are slower and less maneuverable than frigates, they have the same tank, they present bigger targets, and they can be locked more quickly. (They are also one of the most isk-effective ways to deliver a massive amount of damage to your target, and are one of the few ships that interceptor pilots can't afford to go near.)
In PVE, it's mostly about flying a better ship. But in PVP, it's mostly about flying your ship better.

Edited by: Eemaavi on 17/07/2007 15:10:18 Lots of Good Advice (Except that Admiral Shallow,, Funny but not good just sneak into their space and pop their rats Nice Iskies )... That Said don't Neglect your Frigate Skills just because your Going to a Battle Cruiser- The Drake is Nice but thats not the one you want to lose...You always keep 1 ship as your Money-Maker and the Rest consider "Disposable" Keep this in mind as your move of the Ship "Food Chain" Its been said that you can't PvP With losing Ships this is soo True, hance Disposable Frigs.. (Punisher and Rifter are Great PvP Frigs, don't be afraid to train another race if you like that ship your not locked in!)
If You are seriously wanting to do PvP then Train to be able to use: 1. Warp Disruptors 2. Stasis Webifiers 3. Micro WarpDrives 3. Sensor Boosters. Training these Items up makes you able to "Tackle" other Ships while a Friend in a bigger ship(s) kills them. All Corps need people to be Tacklers it's a dirty job one perfectly suited to newbies such as yourself since you have such low skill points and your clones are Cheap. Also Training for Interceptors or Stealth Bombers/Covops or Interdictors is another option that makes you valuable to to a Corp. The Sad reality is that most 0.0 Corps want people who can Fly Battleships, large Guns (PRef t2) and Hit out to a MINIMUM of 150k. If you Don't have that (and that takes awhile) then being able to perform a Niche role well, (Interdictors/CovOPs Esp)will make you valuable.
Joining Agony Unleashed was mentioned and while I have not Taken their Courses, I have flown a few people that have and their training seems solid.. At the very least it should remove /reduce the fear of losing your ship and build your confidence up..
Good luck

Well I joined the game not knowing anything about it so never knew what race would more suit my needs or even what my needs were.
I've trained up what I think would be useful in order to get me to lvl 3 missions but now i've got there the Caracal isn't good enough so training for BC and saving. Also got interested in exploration so have been training those skills as well, got a few days left on electronic upgrades for lvl 5 and then I have to do survey and archeaology before i'm fully qualified as to speak. I'll then be moving onto covop skills as the covop ship is best for exploration, at this point I will be looking into cloaking so I can explore in 0.0 - 0.4
I'm hoping by then i'll have enough experience and cash to start playing about in 0.4 - 0.0 and use my BC for mission running in carebear land.
Sound like a good plan ?
