Today, I kept warping in to the same hopelessly laggy mission (yeah, I'm true to my carebear roots at times) again and again until (when I was at over 40 seconds per frame...) my ship popped. I petitioned it, the customer service was fantastic, this is not a CCP whine thread.
Later (when I really ought to be in bed), I'm reading the forums, lying to myself that I'm somehow less addicted because I'm not actually logged in to EVE. And I see really smart guys talking about how EVE has changed from a tactical game to a strategic game, and how chess is a lot less fun if you're a pawn. I think about laggy fleet battles, and the alliance tournament, and the pain and frustration that finds its way onto these forums every single day.
Why do we do it? Why did I spend 5 million isk repairing my structure to keep trying to run a mission that was never going to return that much? Why do people spend hours organizing themselves so that they can lag out in fleet battles? And then do it again? Why do people spend hours on fuelling POSes? Why do we play this game at all? Why do we play ANY game at all?
Seriously, I want to understand this. |

I play it for fun. It's the sandbox thing, I can do what I like. I want to become an admiral, I need to work at it.
Also, dude, paying for repairs is uncool. Buy a hull repper.
EDIT: And yes, OMFG yes, layzors and shiny sheeps.

The only thing I have to say is that since revalations 2 the lag has really got out of hand.
I cant do missions for the most part anymore because as soon as I warp in, the mission just lags and buy the time it un-lags (if thats the correct terms) im in a pod!!!
And also PVP is stupidly laggy as well, for example me and a few corp mates were fighting are war targets... it was only 3v6... and it lagged out and i ended up in a pod again. GRRRR...

cause people probably think the 5 minutes of fun they get for 5 hours of work is worth it - or they are just really bad at fast reflex games like CS - probably both

as for your last two questions you might as well ask why we live - you dont need to raise a family to live - or get so much money that you have extra left over for years to come or even to have a spotless house as a few dust bunnies arent deadly
part of it is the need to compete - but then you need to explain the lazy complacent people - boredom and the instilled - need - to do it
so playing eve is just that preventing boredom - for some its living out fantasies and for others its stress relief - it can be a social interaction as well ____ __ ________ _sig below_ the jet cans are made so that people that dont mine can get free ore

I play games because shooting people in the face IRL is evil.
Virtually doing so is a damn good time. Why there should be a breathalyzer to login to Eve:

That's better, because if it was legal, im sure we'd all be playing RL Army Men in the streets shooting the **** out of each other and laughing at how much you just pwnd some random guy.
Then smack him shouting how uber you are. Only to be taken out by the Mafia blob squad. Then the sequence repeats itself, as the Mafia blob squad gets taken out by tillers chin. And it just turns into the biggest blob wins.

I agree. I know the positives must be there, I'm just in a very weird mood, and trying to work out what they are.
As far as PVP goes, I think Beef probably has a very valid point, killing people IRL is evil, but we do experience violent urges, and I guess the game is a safe way of expressing those.
The thing that really weirds me out (even while I do it) is just how many EVE players have a very active interest in 'working their way up the corporate ladder' as it were.

Legality has never been the issue for me. Even if it were legal to go pwn people, I wouldn't, because it would be evil. I have no qualms about taking someone out in defense of myself or loved ones, but other than that, no, I just wouldn't. Why there should be a breathalyzer to login to Eve:

Hull repairers my good son, hull repairers.
This is what happens when you PVP continuously for a couple of months and forget how to run missions. (Because sitting outside a station in 0.0 while patiently waiting for your hull repairers to do their thing is much funnier than safe.)

Humans are a interesting species. We often do things that arent logical because it feels good to do them. Its a tricky thing to combine logic with feelings. Ask Spock. ---

There are countless games in the world. There are at least as many ppl that dont like one or more rules of said games. That never stopped smart game designers from creating good games.

The only one of those I've done is the POS fueling thing, and I did that because dodging gatecamps and marauding gankers in a paper thin ship is a whole game in itself. Not to mention the sense of satisfaction in having my own POS. -
