Some more variety for facial structure/weight would be interesting, as we don't tend to see any fat/balding people, or other such eccentricities.
When ambulation rolls around you'll be able to start purchasing custom costumes, etc, so things might start to branch out a bit, although I suppose once the 'faction' clothing goes on sale for 1 bil each there will be whole crews of people running around with the same 'epic gear' and it will be WOW in space....
to the OP, you are correct in that most people go for the generic look.
Top victims: Khanid clear hood, Amarr hood over face, etc.

The old avatars are fine but the new bloodlines are terrible as far as facial variation goes.

I think the clothing should be free and adjustable like the avatar was.

A lost of people claiming they hgave never seen someone similar to theirs... well, I see people who have the same 'face' just not the same details.
Thats probably the ore issue, everyone who picks the same race/bloodline ends up with the same starter face, and for some bloodlines, the choices for variation are too limited to create a truly different avatar.
I also don't think the backgrounds add much. What about a background which is a station widnow that looks out onto space (like newsreaders have with the city behind them) Or a background which shows something game related, to add context.

I'd be all in favor of adding more options/diversity to Avatars, especially with 'ambulation' maybe possibly coming into the game. (side rant: silly word for such a cool concept, when is the last time you ambulated to the fridge for a soda?)
A lot of the stuff we can do with current avatars is fairly limited. "What do you mean? I look nothing like him! My smirk is a fraction of an inch higher on the left!" et al.
