...grasped on gamespy.com from Jeff Kaplan, Assistant Designer of Blizzards World of Warcraft:
GameSpy: What do you think are the major mistakes made by previous MMO's and what are you doing to avoid them? Kaplan: The single most important thing to remember when creating a game is that it must be FUN. When someone sits down to play your MMO, they are doing so to be entertained. An MMO should not feel like a job or obligation. It's very important not to fall into that trap of trying to manipulate your community, as if you're trying to run an ant farm. As a designer, it's your responsibility to create a world that's exciting, challenging, and FUN. It's not your job to play god over someone's play experience.
a big *hmmm* and a critical glance over to iceland from me...
But regardless of that, i truly love EVE

Blizzard in general have had a very good approach to designing their games, and the fun approach generally works well, don't think they have released a game I havent enjoyed.

Yeah me too. Eve is home for me for a very long time. No games supposedly coming out within the next year and a half interest me what so ever. How many fantasy mmorpgs can possibly exist at one time?

Edited by: Karol Kei on 28/01/2004 07:24:15 It is very easy to get it right - when all you have to do is to say: It must be fun.
Jeff Kaplan is not the first one to "get it right" in this department, and while Blizzard's track record is great on other type of games, designing a persistent world game is something completely different, to quote the famous comedians.
In fact, to be brutally honest, if anything that interview dropped my expectations for their game. They obviously are nothing but n00bs like everyone else has been, designing their first (and so far second too) MMORPGs.
The game code and design is nothing but the beginning in MMORPGs, the players ultimately make the game. Look at battleship mining in Eve and 8x8 macroing in Ultima Online as just random examples. Neither of those things were intented, and yet they are very integral parts of the games as they are played.
Kaplan is dead wrong if he thinks that a MMORPG can be run in any other way than playing God over an ant farm. A good MMORPG obviously should not feel like an ant farm, but it still needs to be Goded over. People are people and no matter how nice it starts, within two weeks (and that is stretching it a lot) every MMORPG has turned to a race, and after that - Buh bye "just have fun".
This is a truth and it is like this because of human nature. I will bow to the first game designers that manage to change human nature. I don't expect it to take place any time soon.
P.S. Let me add that I don't think every player plays the game as a race, but large enough portion do to warrant preserving what is left of the original idea by plugging the most obvious holes in the game code and in fact game logic, that they are using.

Well said. "Fun" is not neccessarily superior to "sense of achievement" in gameplay. I get a sense of achievement from doing certain things in Eve (like delivering a cargo 34 jumps and making 10 million from it) - but for pure fun I go Paragliding

EVE is a lot of fun... Mining is fun, NPCs farming is fun, pirating is fun (though never done it my self), hauling is fun, trading if fun, etc, but they are all fun as long as u dont need to do these actions all the time.
What EVE lacks is not the fun factor but the goal. I think this can only be fixed with "EVENTS" organised by players or CCP. Examples: A war between the empires would be nice (ppl would have to decide either to leave the space or stay and fight), some conspiracy that effects ALL OF THE EVE citizens, etc. Well I think u get the main picture!

The goal in Eve is for everyone to obtain 1 unit of Tank CEO biomass. This is something we should all be working towards

heh i think it sucks that europe isnt involved in the WoW beta... one more thing, you have a goal in eve, but it changes all the time. First you want a frigate, then a better frigate, then cruiser better cruiser, now many people wants the t2 blueprints and work to get it. A war would perhaps be fun, but you cant say people dont have goals ------------------------------------------------

Ughhh, what WoW looks like to me is a hybrid SWG and EVER. It lacks fundimental PvP, ghey. Unless they change that, its no different than all the others.

dungeons . dragons . cute wood elf chicks . done it and have the emotional scars .
love eve .but the game really does need a goal though . id introduce alot more . eve roleplay .between the races . factions . corps . in the game . special equipment that is race . faction . corp only etc . . lets see if the developers in there wisdom see this . some folks dont need a structure too enjoy eve . but some would love too follow the story line etc .
regards arutha
ps . how many are tired of the big player corp promises as you do there tasks and find you get nothing in return ? . i mean honestly i wonder deeply at where the million they make go . how many have asked for that battleship lying in the corp hanger . too be told its getting sold for corp funds . . what the hell are you doing with those funds lol .

It would be nice for players to be able to join NPC corps that did stuff. For instance, I could join the Minmatar Navy and help patrol zones or something, while getting paid. I'd need the highest credentials to get the job and be subject to termination (both ways) if I messed up. If a Min-Amar war breaks out (crosses fingers) I'd like to go bash in all their ugly skulls. It would add RP to the game bigtiem IMO.
