I love soccer but I agree.
The sport is about ATHLETES training and playing hard, not billionaire rich boys.
Gimme provincial football anyday over hollywoodized glamorized effeminate "athletes" like David Beckham.
Thats one thing I love about Europe over my own country, more pride in small local teams.
Burn, Hollywood, burn

Originally by: DarkMatter That sport will never be big in the USA.
Many children in this country are brought up playing "soccer" these days, mainly because boys and girls can play it together, and it's not a rough sport, so Mom's want their sons to play that instead of American Football because they don't want little Johnny getting hurt.
Well, when kids grow up, and the jock mentality & peer pressure set in, they change to American Football. The only ones who stick with soccer are the ones who are very talented, whose Moms still wont let them play football, or the ones who would get killed playing football.
Any other normal high school male jock is going to play football.
Here is why our sport is called football: American Football
In the USA, soccer is NOT a manly sport. Both men and women in this country like watching manly sports. Soccer is viewed as a sport that is more finesse than anything, which translates to gheyness for the American sports fan...
Do you actually WATCH football (soccer)?
Some of the injuries you see on the field will make you cringe, from tripping over someone's foot and somersaulting onto your face, to someone's foot clubbing you in the face on its way to kicking the ball, to two guys *****ing their skulls together tryin to headbutt the ball.
When I was younger they made me goalie, some kid kicked the ball into my face from 10 feet away so hard I was on the floor seeing stars.
No "ghey" helmets or girlygirl shoulderpads, just a bunch of immensely fit athletes on a grass field tryin to wrangle a ball into the opposite goal.
The face of America is changing, the population is changing, fewer NASCAR types, less school budget for baseball equipment, football equipment, basketball nets, hardwood floors and so forth.
For soccer all you need is an open space and a ball, I've seen pickup games start spontaneously in seconds, 2 guys come to the park kicking a ball around, pretty soon you got people joining in and you end up with 10 v 10 on the baseball diamond.
Baseball sucks. (American) Football sucks. Basketball is so-so. Tennis is kinda ghey.
Soccer, that's the ultimate international sport for real athletes only.
So what if girls can play. You ever heard of womens boxing? I suppose 2 women in a ring beating each other until their faces look like hamburger meat is ghey too.

America will never feel that way.
Most sports fans in this country despise it...
As much as some media outlets try to push it on us, we don't really want it... We'll watch the poker championships over soccer any day...
And yeah, if we played our version of football without pads, players careers would not last too long.
Get your best soccer players on the field against American football players without pads, and let them play our game... We'll see which athletes last longer...
Lets put em up against Sumo wrestlers and see who can tackle the other.
Obviously sumo wrestlers must be supremely conditioned athletes.

And whats this "we" stuff?
I'm an American. Duh.
I love football (what you call soccer.)
I play it with people all the time, theres more ppl at the park playing football than baseball, in fact NOBODY around here plays baseball or American football.
BTW I'm from NYC.
I think there's a rural America that loves American Football, Baseball, NASCAR and Country music.
And I think there's the urban America that like European Football, Basketball and R&B.
I'm from the urban America crowd.

Reading comprehension please.
I said that football (soccer to you) is more popular in urban centers than in rural areas.
Cheaper? Definitely.
Safer? Maybe.
Promotes better fitness than American football? Definitely.
Edit : Thats not to say ppl in rural areas aren't catching on. I think football will grow in popularity everywhere and the more traditional sports (baseball etc) will die out.

BTW I'm not trying to push soccer on you.
Just stating my opinion that it is catching on and becoming huge.
