Edited by: source on 22/07/2007 01:00:00 Been browsing for nightmare setups for the last month or so only to find that there really isn't anything I've liked. Been putting together theoretical setups in my head keeping in mind the thing has very limited cpu so here it goes
Highs - 4x domination siege's (4x cruises if siege don't fit) 4x Amarr navy/ts/db Megapulses (maybe downgrade if cpu is a problem)
Mids - 1x gist c-type mwd (or maybe faction if needed) 1x ts web 1x j5 warp disruptor 1x ts heavy injector
Lows - 2x large reps (was thinking ss to save cpu) 1x kin/therm/exp ts hardners 1x damage control (best named or t2 if it fits) and the last 2 either faction eanm/1600 or 2x 1600
Implants - lg slave & no idea what else -cpu implants?/ +rof? / +dmg? / =armor?
Drones - 5x med 5x light (don't like to have 3x heavies or worse 2x2x1 heavy/med/light)
Would be used solo on a station or in small gangs with a scout. I would like to hear from any body who has used it before on pvp only setups
*edit* forgot to mention. What about 4x domination 650's & 4x sieges (completely disregarding the laser bonus' and going for all out varied damage/suprise factor)

Get a CNR or a Rattlesnake if you want to shoot + tank, or a Machariel if you want to go fast and shoot missiles. The Nightmare is just flat out worse than these ships at these roles.

I know it's not the 'best' out there and others can probably do stuff better, just looking for people who have used it in the past and had any success with it
p.s. Didn't think I had to say so in the original post, but please oh please don't say 'so and so is better, go get that' if possible keep it on topic.

I fly a nightmare and have used it in PVP. Even officer and faction fitted and with decent skills it is still woefully under powered compared to any other pirate faction BS.
Quite plainly, it needs 7 turrets with damage bonus and tracking bonus just to be on par with the other BSs.
But on the constructive side. If you are planning on taking it into combat I would suggest fitting...
( Change with officer/ faction where wallet allows )
4X dual heavy pulse II 4X Faction Siege launcher With faction ammo
1X After burner ( MWD will cripple tanking ability ) 1X webber 1X 24k scram 1X Cap injector
2X LAR 3X Hardners exp, kin, therm ( i use officer ) 1X DMG control 1X CPU upgrade 1X BCU
If you are going after alot of small cruiser ships I would fit cruise instead of siege and change the dual heavies into mega pulses and fit 2X webber drones and 5X lights.
In short Bigger guns + cruiser = faster ROF and better accruacy and tank, Smaller Guns + Siege = Better dmg against BS sized or over targets but pathetic dmg against smaller ships.
Just a side note, ECM drones would do you well in a one on one.

With excellent skills the nightmare can't be beaten. With non-exellent skills, yes, it is a bit awful. It's a bigger typhoon really... just a bit gimped.

it pretty standar in the high mids slots, its the lows that are the tricky once and actuvly depend on the high slots.
imo
high:
4x lowest CPU req launcers (siege or cruies) and biggest pusles with in cpu range (and this is fitted after low slots to see what cpu your working with)
mid: (standard pvp)
MWD scram web injector (named or faction) just have ot low cpu req
low:
2x L reps (DB or same) 2x faction EANM 1x DGU T2(must imo)
2x slots left are the hardest to fitt.
plate will only slow it down to the point where you dont want the MWD there so plate = AB in mid then in the other slot a HS T2 if it fits and the nightmare has the 2nd most hp of the faction ships if my calc is right (8 in the morning havent slept all night)
or 2x HS T2 in the last 2 slots
or 1x HS T2 and DCU T2(but that req cpu)
and 100% skills and some implants are prop very handy as well
and in all this fitting madness on this ship the price still keeps rising (i know about the plex nerf)
best fix you can find on this ship is to have the same turret\launcer layout as an apoc and have the galdari bonus an optiaml range on the lasers by 10%

If you were to go full gank, that'd be different of course but in this case i'd go for max tank, being 3x active + 2x EANM + DCU

Rattlesnake and CNR will both outdamage it and outtank it, and will do both while using no cap for guns and not having to care about tracking. Hell, it's maybe a 3-5% damage improvement over a REGULAR Raven. This ship is terrible for its cost in PvP. I mean if it cost maybe 300 mil I could see using it as it's better than any regular BS, but not with its current price tag.

Well it has the highest armour of any bs in the game and can have an insane passive tank if you use slaves+trimarks+1600s.
It's pretty iffy with normal setups because your tank gets hurt by having to fit a cpu mod and you'll have low damage as you probably wont want use damage mods because of the split weapon slots. If you want a pimped active tank you'd be better off in an abaddon or even a navy apoc.

Finalized a setup that isn't horribly expensive, and tanks pretty decently. Unfortunately Even with pretty decent skills on both ends, i can only get 500 dps out of the 8 split weapons.
Highs - 4x caldari navy cruise launcher ( try and get dread guristas ammo) 4x True sansha Mega pulse (again try and get darkblood/true sansha multifreq and standard)
Mids - 1x gist-c type 100mn mwd (same fitting as x-type and alot cheaper) 1x domi web/ 1x domi disruptor 1x true sansha heavy cap booster
Lows - 2x true sansha large reps 1x kin/therm/exp True Sansha Hardner 1x radical damage control (got mine for 15 mil ) 2x True sansha Adaptive nano membrane (no cpu ftw)
Drones - 2x heavy web drones 5x warrior II (web drones help keep slower blaster ships away for longer)
Rigs - 1x energy burst aerarator (would like to use missile rig but setup 621.625 cpu ) 1x aux nano pump 1x trimark giving the thing 23.1 k armor Stats - 23177 armor 77/84/78/77 em/therm/kin/exp resists. Does just under 500 dps with decent volley damage due to a 10 sec rof on cruises. only problem I have found is the cap doesnt last that long at 1;30 with mwd on so it is a bit harder keeping range.
Implants - Slave set. (im using all but omega because cyber 5 is a pain and I still get
Notes - This thing begs for a officer web. even the lowest one. Use the ship to what it looks like it was to do and stay out of blaster/nos(soon to be neut) range.

High: TS Mega Pulse / TS Siege (Faction crystals, standard torps) Med: Domi Webber / Domi Disruptor / CR II / Heavy Booster Low: IF Array / 2 x TS Reppers / 2 x TS Nanos / 1 x TS Kin/Exp/Thrm Hardeners
2 x Trimark rigs, 1 x Aux Nano
DPS is over 500. Armor is 21,000 (111,000 effective), sustained rep of 900+ dps for over 5 minutes. Resists are 80/86/81/77 Em/Thrm/Kin/Exp. It's already slow so AB wasn't much help. Open with Siege, Disrupt at 30k, Lasers at 20k, Web at 15k.
Stay away from projectiles on a PvP setup. Lasers use cap but do about 25% more damage accross average resists.

As a Nightmare owner, please realize that you ship will change drastically in Trinity, and the above fittings will no longer apply. I would be careful not to lose the precious thing now, because if the trend continues and people will start to see the new stats after the patch, we'll have prices in the range of 3 billion for one of these babies soon.

Some changes summarized: -4 launcher slots +100% inherent damage on lasers, Cap use bonus removed Adjusted racial skill gains -5000 grid (-26%) +210 CPU (+42%) -2 highslots, -3 lowslots, +3 midslots (now 6 / 7 / 5)
All in all, it will be a better Amarr Marauder without the skill requirements. Well, with the one exception that it wants to be shield tanked, yeah.
Also note that this stuff is from SiSi, but considering CCP should more or less be in feature freeze for Trinity already... and the fact that all Sansha ships have been changed in the same manner... I'd say that it's pretty much guaranteed to happen.

Nothing. Or maybe rename it all to Dark Blood and make new TS shield mods seeing as TS and DB have the same stats.

at first i was proepr disappointed by the changes as i have plenty of shield tankign ships and the mare was a great armor tanker and the split system was ideal for me since i have my missile skills really high and limited lasers.
It looks like it will have a truly insanely strong tank with the 7 mids and 5 lows, it'll be nasty on the cap but with any luck it shud kill stuff quick enuff that it dunt need to tank for long.
Onc eagain tho, i'm rather pee'd about the insane amount of isk i have in 5% zet implants and faction armor tank, yeah the modules will sell but i now have no armor tank ships to use so this clone is practically redundant now, just glad i'd not got the slave set, that would probs have tipped me over the edge lol

Well, to be fair, you have not posted an alternative have you?
You have not posted an alternative Nightmare tank, nor pointed out the good raven examples.
And as I have recently read the forums for ravens, most set-up are for per-run large and blipping x-large.
I have joined the cap modules and rigs crew, with massive number of hardeners and a single non-boosted X-large for blipping. Works fine for me, I have yet to cry.
I will agree that I spend most of my time ratting, and often a rat set-up is a world away from PvP config. But then I am sure there is a PvP - Raven set-up worth taking the time to read for its tank.

Haven't figured out the 'best' (whatever it means) setup yet, but it's kinda evident that Nightmare can utilize few tracking/optimal range boosting modules to achieve better perfomance. Webber/AB can also be quite handy. So it's beyond me how copying Raven's setup can be that great.
Generally speaking, new Mare seems to be rather suitable for both pulses and tachs (or even beams if your particular setup lacks PG), so I doubt one can say that pulses are clearly superior to tachs or vice versa.
The setup I'm currenly working out includes:
4x Tachs II 2x ...
Heavy Cap Booster XL Shield Booster 5x ...
DC 2x HS 2x ...
2x Semiconductor Memory Cells 1x ...
Fields marked '...' are up to discussion.
Fitting 2x Heavy Nos would be great but unfortunately it's unlikely to happen due to Tachs consuming almost all the MWs avail 
Megapulses on the other hand allow using just any module of choice.
I'd say the following will rock:
4x Megapulse 2x Heavy Nos
AB XL SB SBA Heavy Cap Booster 3x invuls or whatever
DC 3x HS + whatever you need.
Rigs: SMC or SMC/resists ---

I was thinking (for missions)
4x Tachs (faction or officer) 1x Heavy Dim. Nos
4x hardeners 1x Gist B-Type X-L Shield Booster 2x Cap Recharger II
3x HS 2x Cap Flux
3x CCC
peak dps tanked isnt super high, but its got a crapton of cap regen and shouldnt have any trouble firing off tachs with multifreq, and running a mean tank. its ability to permarun the booster (and regen cap) when not shooting make up for the loss of a boostamp, as will a crystal set.
