Hey guys, just wanted to hear other peoples inputs on what all you can 'be' in EVE. I realise you can pretty much be whatever you want, but what are in your opinion the professions that you can get around with in EVE, making a living and actually having fun.
What I mean is, what all professions can you actually excercise in the world of EVE?
Here is my contribution:
-Scientist/Researcher -Manufacturer/Engineer -Miner -Trader/Cargo shipper -Corporate position holder -Explorer -Corporate fighter pilot -Mercenary/Bountyhunter -Spy -Pirate
My main problem being, my main character is a manufacturer/miner/tradesman/scientist/explorer all combined, and my secondary character is a mercenary fighter pilot/pirate. Now, for the third character slot, I would like something different from the first two characters, but don't have any clue whatsoever as for what that could be.
Appreciate your input!!

My character does EVERYTHING (well most things). Granted, he isn't excellent at anything, but the game is more playable. I mine, trade, haul, fight, research, build, explore but, ugh, I don't pirate. Not bored yet. Was bored in corp where roles and activities are more clearly defined.

Actually, what I meant was more like, are there anything else to do than manufacture / mine / trade(includes all forms of trade)/ research / fight / explore?
Im not by any means saying that I don't like doing those things, but since my two characters already do all of that, I have the third character slot empty.. And hey, empty slots are boring. ;)
Just checking if I have overlooked some possibilities (and propably have).

Look beyond money-making, Luke! Stretch out with your feelings!
Seriously. What you can do depends on how fat you want your wallet to be. If you're interested in a really fat wallet - I mean, take-me-to-the-chiropractor- this-thing-has-knocked-my-butt-out-of-whack fat - then there are a fairly limited number of ways to do that. Most of them involve either getting other people to make isk for you, or getting a bunch of accounts and spending an obscene amount of time mining.
Now, if you don't care too much about wallets thickness (like me: I own 12 frigates, one cruiser and one indy. My wallet has never risen above 20 million, and generally hovers around 5. And I've been playing since last July), there are all sorts of things you can do. Many of 'em have been mentioned here. Look at Jera, for instance. I don't imagine being the CEO of Drink Starsi makes her a lot of dosh, but I'll bet it's fun rousing all that rabble.
So, on the one hand, you can think to yourself "I've got a manufacturer/miner/etc character, and a fighter, what other sort of profession do I want to do". Or you could think to yourself "I've got a jack-of-all-trades type who likes running a business and making something of it, and I've got a nasty Caldari pirate who wants to help liberate Caldari Prime. What else do I want to do? I've got it! I'll play an Amarr who gets the idea that slavery goes against the scriptures and makes it his personal mission to point this out!"

eve badly needs a role play element too it . but atm its kinda impossible too play a minamtar freedom fighter or amarr slaver . just cause . simply the game . allthough a mmog . missed out the rpg bit . and sorry smacktalk talk in a .9 system dosent constitute role play
what can be done to help those who would like to play a deeper role play game in eve . i dunno . will take a cleverer mind than mine too figure out how too balance that .

The system and rules are not everything.

Its impossible to RP all the time in Eve, whoever, it is easy to stay in character. This may sound contradictory, but I think non-RP'ers perception of RP'ers and RP-ing is that its a 24-7 in game commitment, and something that is overly theatrical and hammy.
Thats simply not the case.
It is easy to adopt a persona and a stance and stick to it in game. And it does add to the fun.

Exactly so milady Petrova,
It is quite possible to play the game as is, with merely broader motivations and characterisation depending on roleplayed persona.

First, what's with the punctuation?
Second, Eve is actually defined as a MMOG on the CCP website, not as an MMORPG. Dunno if that is deliberate, but there you go...

Why not just let people play the game how they want? Afterall, this game is about human interaction. If you want to create a persona to play out that interaction then so be it. If you don't want to, then don't.
What CCP intended the game to be is irrelevant. Its the playerbase that defines the interactive environment not the games creators.

Edited by: Jayad on 29/01/2004 15:02:41 I find it hard not to role-play, some events in eve are just better conveyed through the story line acting your part.
m0o, for instance seem much more terrifying as a murderous pirate cartel than a group of c0ockney thugs. Even though the m0o guys clearly express they have no real love of RP, Stav still got involved a bit.
RP is possible in every online game, but more so when the setting is realistic with death. IÆm quite happy with eveÆs RP populace, but there can never be enough RP :)

I started an Anti BS Empire Space Mining rogue corp(so no one can decalare war on me) where I give all the proceeds of my stealing to the person who rats out the Bs miners. Let me tell you there is one happy camper out there right now with about 15 mil in ore from me. I only steal from BS's too so its not like they need it. And I only do it in empire so if they attack me they get greeted with a bestower with warp scramblers and burst ew for the drones since they always have all miners equiped. It stopped working when I was to well known and now it's never going to work. I would perfectly bookmark them so by the time they got to the station to get a hauler I had it all safely in a can about 500k away from the belt.

I run many roles in this game since I have 3 accounts, 1¦st account : 1¦st slott is dedicated fighter(pirate), 2¦nd slott is hauler, 3¦rd slott is member of medium/big corp. 2¦nd account : 1¦st researcher/buyer/builder/seller (main isk maker to support my fighter), 2¦nd slott is CEO of small mercinery corp, 3¦rd slott is scout.
3¦rd account : 1¦st slott is CEO of small corp that specilizes in small events that support so called noobs, 2¦nd slott is member of so called mega corp, 3¦rd slott is empty.
I play the roles that suit my mood that day, harder if you have 1 account but still possible.
I think you have yet to play the role of supporter, i.e. help others to get ahead in the game just for the fun of it, make your own fun and dont get stuck in the virtual world Spawn of the Devil
