Haven't seen too many posts about the Caracal. Is this a viable cruiser? I enjoy missle combat but am curios about a Caracal configuration versus a MOA, range, damage, etc... Any thoughts? |

A Caracal is a misille boat only! so its a good ship for hit and run, but i dont think it would be espacial good against a moa!

I'd have to disagree totally with that, depends on the pilot and the set-up.

I have a mate who I combat tested my Moa against his Rupture. He totally owned me...I was on fire and I hadn't even gotten through his shields at all.
I docked and brought my Caracal out (standard fitting I always use...no special modding it just to defeat a particular ship/loadout). I owned his ass. He kept his Rupture going a lot longer than I thought was possible but in the end the battle was all mine. In real battle his only choice would be to run or die.
That's not to say a Caracal can't be killed. They most definitely can...all too easily for my money (they are not robust and are horridly slow and ponderous). However, in the right hands it is a nasty bird. Even battleships have to pay attention to one when it is on the scene (which generally means they see to it the Caracal dies first).
Caracal is 100% PvP ship. They suck for pretty much anything else (agent missions, NPC hunting, etc.).

although its hull and armour are quite puny it does have high shields (1000), combine this with 4 mid slots and you have a descent sheild tank. I find the caracals main drawback is the cpu, you cant even run a gameboy off it without the air con failing.

If you use a Caracal expect to die, Caracals and Blackbirds are always the first to die in PvP.
Also, now that missiles no longer inflict damage after you've shot them and go to align warp to get out, forget about hit and run..... ------

Hey i survived two battles in YZ-LQL in my caracel but i had to bail out in one fight a caracal is good but it cant take a missile spam from a raven for long. But BB is like the prim target in battles. Had a 1v1 on chaos moa vs caracel the moa got killed but he wasted 2med slots on ecm so i was target jammed luckily i had FoF in my cargo and the moa never got me to armor. But its all up to the setup and skills

"Caracal is 100% PvP ship. They suck for pretty much anything else (agent missions, NPC hunting, etc.)."
You mean it only sits there doing PvP all the time.
In between PvP duties, with some refitting, a Caracal can do agent missions and NPC hunting absolutely---which helps pay for its cost too. Caracals are great for agent missions because of its large cargo space---as big as an Omen's or Stabber's.
There is a number of tough NPC kill missions that results in some very hard cruisers (not somthing you see in an empire space spawn) or even a battleship NPC. Things that means you have to pull your gloves off.
Then you'll pray you actually have a Caracal with five H-50s loaded with cruise missiles instead of some Vexor or Omen.
The easy agent kill missions can be more than dealt with 2 250mm rails.

Edited by: Sepharim on 29/01/2004 08:08:42 i was told to swap one of the heavy launchers for a medium launcher to use for defender missles, and heavy missles for frigs. (u can also save valuable cpu doing this)
and if you stagger your missles by 2-3 secs(which you should to avoid them blowing each other up) then u can reload another cruise missle in the medium launcher without hardly noticing by the time its turn comes.
what you think of them apples?

Hi Peeps
I have been sitting on a 3 x 30k cruiser spawn (caldari ospreys) in a Caracal for a while now.
Basically it starts with 3 ...and after you kill them a new one appears every 4 mins (up to the max of 3 again).
I take a basic loadout of 5 launchers with Widowmakers (heavy missile with thermal damage) in every launcher.
Takes 15-17 missiles to kill each osprey (at a cost of about 7500 ISK).
I stagger the missiles with gaps of about 2 secs between them, for 2 advantages IMHO:
1. 1 defender only takes out 1 Widowmaker, since there is a significant gap between the missiles. (theoretical here but applicable elsewhere and a so good habit)
2. Reloading launchers becomes easier, as they drop out with a gap between them.
I send all missiles at one target at a time.
I warp in at max range.
I always pack an afterburner, a medium shield booster and capacitor batteries (to boost max capacitor).
Took me a while, but once I got the hang of this setup I can clear 3 cruisers and be left with 70% of my shields. The basic method is to switch the shiled booster on just before the first missile hits, and then count the missiles out.
Having been elsewhere (helping friends on agent missions against cruisers) ...I can say that I find the Caracal a GREAT ship for NPC kills when handled correctly.
Main Strengths are:
Attack from long range means you generally only deal with incoming missiles Fat shield (as on all caldari ships) Massive cargo space, which has got even better with the shrinking size of missiles.
Main Weaknesses are:
Relative cost of missiles is high Slow ship to collect cargo (I might change to a MWD) Asteroids get in the way of missiles
Just my 2 ISK worth ...
DC.

Couple of other things...
Another Main strength - Massive damage potential (how could I forget ). With Missile Launcher skill level 5 you are pumping out around 600+ damage every 15 seconds ...from 50k away
If you go NPC hunting in a Caracal - look for caldari cruisers (I forget exactly which pirates - message me in game and I will send you the answer). They drop upgraded heavy missile launchers. Over time you can upgrade all of your launchers to higher specs which means more missiles and faster launch speeds.
Last but not least ....if you get the timing just right, you have a lovely little trail of 5 missiles rolling towards the enemy ...very satisfying

Edited by: Frost88 on 29/01/2004 12:02:07 After losing my BB to a PC Pirate attack I went straight for caracal (mostly paranoia as I wanted to be able to hurt if I did get jumped again) but since then I have been using it for all sorts. Mostly usuing it at a 30k 3 rat spawn (caldari ospreys again :P ), it works a treat with the two 250 rails you can be hitting heavily enough to take them out one on one, and with some F.O.F cruise or heavies kept in your heavy launchers you can deal with any desperate situations. The big cargo space means you can sit at a spawn happily for quite some time before having to resort to running it back to the station or dumping it in a can, as well as obvious bonuses of being able to carry more missiles, and the Caldari rats drop a lot of missiles so your unlikely to run out. And the 200 drone space comes in handy too if you happen to get a few drones from loot. I've even used it for low sec mining as the missiles and handful of drones can defend you suffuciently enough, while you mine but this is more me having no other ship at the moment :P. I've also started fitting some shield hardeners on it as the only real weakness it has is once the shields are gone... That and it handles like a house brick but hopefully that'll change when CCP remember the Caldari Race Description. ------------------------------------------------ I've always owned Kehmor, cheap as chips off Ebay

The caracal is a bit like the Raven/Scorp debate.
Though to be fair persoanlly I think with the changes to items such as warp stabs and hull/armour kits the caracal lacks low slots and perhaps should have 1 or 2 more to make it viable.
