So it means that (if I have understood this correctly) eve actually uses massive graphics resources which kill my cpu but leave my gpu relatively intact, even though my setup on half life 2 can run with little trouble with most if not all settings at high up to and including 72fps.
With eve I am lucky if I get 35 in station...
Is it really such a resource hog?
The GPU, or graphics processing unit as it is cunningly named, is designed to render graphics. The CPU, or central processing unit as it is slightly less cunningly named, is designed to run about everything else (Other than audio for the audio card, or if you have a physics card and one of the like 2 games that uses them physics, etc.)
Windows calculator? CPU. Half Life 2? GPU. MSN Messenger? CPU. Bioshock? GPU. Eve Online, run on Trinity 1? CPU.
I'm sure you see a pattern with the first four, and see something terribly wrong with the fifth.
I'm no computer hardware expert, I learned enough to build my own computer years ago and have forgotten all the acronyms by now. There are plenty of words I'll use that are probably a bit off. But I do remember that graphics card have hardware specifically designed for rendering environments with stuff like shaders, anti-aliasing, etc. It has memory designed to efficiently store and access this information, differently from typical RAM. CPU's and standard RAM sticks are designed for longer term storage, like loading a song for WMP or remembering all that stuff you wrote in notepad.
Someone like me has a meaty graphics card thanks to their old one dying and getting a new one, but has a not-so-meaty CPU. Bioshock on full = no problem. Eve on low in semi-large fights = zomg ctrl+q before it asplodes
