God yes a crow can do solo piracy very well indeed. I started flying one recently and love it. yes the dps sucks something rotten but i have taken down cruisers, af's, and obviously lower. took down a ferox with 2 crows (took about 20 minutes )
The great thing about it is you can roam around with no scout not worrying about gatecamps and can at least attempt to take on most targets in game. And, if the almighty blob turns up then most of the time u can simply leave.

Gistii Crow you say?
Lol i do it in T2 quite comfortably; Crusaders do **** tbfh.
Come do the same to my Sader, kay?
That Sader was close range fitted, it wont kill anyone. ( Except maybe some poor frigates or something).
It's all about Dual Light Beam II pwnage and dictating your range.
Dead Gistii-Crow
Ok showing a link to a killmail of a gisti crow that died who's about 7 months old doesn't prove much tbh.
Between the 2 it totally depends on pilot skill, fittings and skillpoints.

2 equally skilled/experienced pilots, sader wins 99% of the time, at speeds greater than 6km/s, your light missiles will be doing 0 damage.

Ferocious, I fly the Vaga so your point is moot. But you are right, a mistake in an inty means you are dead. Practice makes perfect and tbh I'd rather fly perfectly and not make a mistake than sit in something which will forgive errors like the Vaga. IMO the Vaga is easy mode compared to flying in something that tanks like a paper towel.
Another thing you must keep in mind is that while the Vaga has dropped in price, it's still an expensive ship to fit, losing one will hit the wallet a lot harder for most independants. You are in a fortunate position that you are in the MC, not all of us have that kind of setup where we can 0.0 rat for isk in relative safety, we make our money from Piracy and it's hard work for the smaller fish in a big sea.
I'm not disagreeing with you in any major way, just trying to stick to what the OP originally asked.

To surmise, yes it is perfectly possible to pirate in a crow.

You can call me FeAr. I think we all strive to fly perfectly, however, you and I know that can't happen all the time. We are humans we will make mistakes, you just have to learn from them. The crow is a fabulous ship to pvp in, I just feel it has too many target restrictions. That's why I recommended the vagabond, he has more freedom, he will have a lot more fun. Now, if he isn't stable in the wallet department I can see where the crow would be a perfect fit.

that was a frickin awesome fight.
our 2 crows vs a thorax, jag, crow, domi and a couple of others i think. not all at once tho. thorax was deep into hull, jag nearly broke shields at one point but also nearly got my wingmans crow. long fight for no kills but it was fun. 9km/s crow ftw

Using reference from a credit card advert from the last century..priceless
Ceptors still have their place. Warping at 9AU+ per second will catch targets bailing from system. Long live the ceptor

And about Crow being fun to fly, I dont really agree with that. Crow is as boring as NanoCurse is, VERY boring.
ehhh
I've solo'd crusaders when they've had a second inty support.. sure it took a little bit of clever play to get it done and split em up.. but wtf? heh
Edit: before anyone goes wtf asl.. both were at the station i had safes dotted around, i allowed the crusader to chase me.. made sure i took him about 140km away from the station (the other inty was on the station) and then had him in web range and abused him (yes i fit webs on crows). I did leave in armor, and didn't get his loot as his friend finally managed to cover the distance to warp to 0 to his friend so i wtf left :) =
