Depends on the day/mood. I normally put on pandora.com and let it flow where it will.
Kinda hooked on local bands lately, though.

rise against, static-x, slipknot, spineshank (RIP), mushroomhead, and more recently i've gotten into the red jumpsuit apparatus. the harder the better but the music has to have some quality to the tone and a bit of melody.

I listen to a lot of fast poppy stuff, Stereo Total is pretty sweet. I speak no French but it is a beautiful language, and pop beats are universal.

You'd be surprised how many metal bands have concept/theme albums about space, math and physics. Physics and the possibilities that it can bring about are a frightening topic and metal bands love those types of topics.
Add to that the extremely metalic sound, combined with a wall of sound and you get all kinds of fun imagery and sound scapes.
You forget that there are more than 50k metal bands and 40 years of metal history, your generalization that implies that all metal folk are simple is a little off the mark...
Now if you're referring to nu metal (Mudvayne and crap like that) then you are quite right. But nu metal is a simplified crossover of (80s) hardcore punk and Pantera inspired groove metal which is why most people in the know don't consider nu metal bands metal bands. Oh yea, and Mike Patton. Mike Patton is essential to any discussion involving nu metal. Guy had some great ideas (Mr Bungle!), but he helped to spawn one of the more terrible genres of music ever conceived.
