I'm going to keep this simple since I'm leaving shortly, and since the idea has probably already been posted here before.
Every time a gang forms up, every new person to join inevitably asks the same questions. "Where is the gang forming?" "What ship types would be best?" "What's our objective?" etc. So, why not allow the gang boss/fleet FC to create a message to appear once when the channel is first opened (i.e. when a new member joins the gang, they will see at the top of the window "FC Message: blah blah blah" or something) and reappear in every member's window if the message is changed? It would show up just like MOTDs do in user-created channels, and it would be totally free-form so the FC/boss could decide exactly how much information they want to give away to the gang.
Anyway, just an idea. Think about it.

Just gonna throw in an example of what I mean for clarity's sake now that I have more time...
This is what you see in the gang chat window as soon as you accept the invitation to the gang: Message from gang boss (Insig): Drunken frig raid forming up in 9-9. Target: Shrike's new avatar. T1/T2 frigs only. Join vent channel "suicide ops." BYOB.

Very good idea, and throw in a slash command or button to push that'll bring it back up. If you B too much of YOB, it gets tough to remember what you're shooting at or why.
I think there should be MOTDs for corp and alliance chat, as well, and sovereignty should let you put them in local.

Heh, Corp and Alliance chat MOTDs would be cool too... as for local, that'd certainly allow for a whole new level of AFK-smacktalking, but it could be nice.
