Is probably going to be the main thing keeping me interested in EVE. When I played this game two years ago on my old account, I loved the graphics and I felt really immersed in the game. Now the graphics are still good, but becoming outdated. The update will bring me back in the immersed state, and I can't freaking wait for it :)
Is it supposed to come out this year? I keep hearing mixed things.
And I have seen the one topic with a bunch of pics of the new engine/models, but are there any Tempest/Typhoon pics? I'm a graphics ***** :)

the only thing that would drag me from eve is a twitch controlled space mmo with the same depth
I might even forgive a little less depth
my poor flight system is crying because it has been rendered useless by eve's depth

>< damn them for taking so long with it :p
Still I got suckered into the swarm and its ace, so I think I'll stay for a bit anyway, just dont take too long with the gfx you space monkeys!

I've heard and am assuming early next year. For all thats being put into this I wouldn't be upset at all if it were pushed back a month or two, its a massive job. I've looked all over the place for new pics but aside from the collection here ->http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=562778, I have yet to see any. From what the other minnie remodels look like I'd assume the tempest would follow the same trend of having most of the scrap parts organized into a more defined structure like these:
http://dl.eve-files.com/media/corp/Crane/scythe.jpg http://staff.ccpgames.com/redundancy/devblogs/bellicose.jpg
Seems to continue what the design around the hurricane and maelstrom started. I totally agree on the immersion btw, nothing draws me more into a game world than the visuals. -------------------------

As far as I have read, the GFX update is schedualed in early 2008.
Also it appears to be mianly DX9 with the odd bit of DX10 flourish if your PC supports it.Luckily for me, mine does ______________________________

Edited by: Imperator Jora''h on 02/08/2007 09:11:12 Maybe it is just me but I have found the graphics update to be a bit underwhelming.
There...I said it and will get flamed but from the pics I have seen I have not been bowled over.
Are they better? Sure. But to me the extra detail is minimal.
For a game EVE's age it still looks remakably good. Where I'd REALLY see improvement is in revamping the scale of things. Planets, moons, stations and so on. Make them feel like the size they are meant to be. A little extra bump mapping and fiddly bits on the ships is fine and nice but from where they are today to what they will be is not a quantum leap in graphics. Planets that feel like planets would be.

Although there was a comment before this to the same effect I'll just respond to this one by saying: It's possible but it's not as if it has earned that reputation, it hasn't been in development very long yet so there is a large chance it could come out. There are regular updates if you check the site. It's not as if the guy is gaining anything, there aren't any advertisements on the site, he's never asked for money either. I don't understand why anyone would assume it was vaporware other than to be a troll with no supporting evidence.
Or could it be that such a game is too good to be true and therefore will never exist? Watch the videos and look at some of the updates and you will see that it's at least entertaining to browse the site every once in awhile.

I see this as moot. Ok so the moons look small compared to everything else, and the planets blah blah blah.
If you get within a KM of a planets surfaace, the planets are MASSIVE, the moons are smaller but they are moons.
The problem we have is that until the eve-avatar stuff comes in, we have no human counterpart to get scale on. I use the generalisation as defined by the eve entry on wikipedia that a Rifter is about the size of a 747 jet.
Scales best achievable when we have something close to the real world to compar it with. The eve-avatar video helped a little by showing a ship next to the avatar characters. ______________________________

How about if a little common sense can be poured into EVE so that you can warp between any main celestial object like station to station, stargate to stargate or station etc and NOT find yourself warping through planets...
That alone put a bunch of my friends off even trying EVE.

The last update was in april. they have 2 developers. there are some screenies and some vids, thats all. release date supposed to be end 2007 : no testing has occured as of yet, not even pre-alpha. nothing public.
Though I love the concept of procedural programming a project as large as this requires a LARGE team to maintain. So far theres just the 2 guys. if you want to seriously MAKE this game you need a business model, investors, servers, the whole shebang. this game has been 'online' since 2005: if any 'real' developer or publisher would be interested, they would have snagged it by now.
Don't get me wrong, I say more power to the maker: but he has a herculean task ahead of him, and I see only slim chances of success. I would LOVE for him to release his game and get the love he deserves, but infinity has 'pipe dream' written all over it...
I'm not just trolling, I just think it's fairly unlikely that inifnity will be tangible anywhere before 2010. if it DOES come out end 2007, I'll be sure to check it out though. a billion worlds, and a game made for explo sounds fun. I worry about the procedural part of the game replacing any true content though.
All I'm saying is, don't hold your breath.....

Bah, I have no hopes of the game coming out anytime soon. it's gonna take at least two more years IMHO. I relaize that they have a small dev team, extremely small. But I'm amazed at how much they have accomplished with what little human resources they have.
All I'm saying is keep your eyes on it.

If a few fancy graphics is the only thing going to keep you in Eve you are missing the point.

How about reading some of the papers on warp drive theory, then come back and whine about something that is actually a problem?

Well, if you take into account the procedural programming, the accomplishments can be put into perspective: the whole MEANING of the technology is to reduce the amount of man hours and headcount you need to put into programming in the first place.
My main gripe is the fact that procedural prog, which from now in I will referr to as PP, is a viable technology, but you must ensure that your game doesn't become completely made out of filler material.
if you look at the 'other' PP game, Spore, you can see that the stuff which is possible IS indeed mind boggling: getting it to work as a playable game, which is fun, engaged, and replayable is a whole other matter. PP and spore in particular run the risk of creating nothing more than viva pinata with a different pinata every time you start over. And lest we forget, spore is facing delay after delay and a complete no show at e3 07.
The same is true with inifinity: a billion systems SOUNDS awesome: but can PP create the depth you want from those systems, or will it just be a the same system with a million variables over and over again. will it be 'stale' ? I realise of course the vast majority of eve is sterile and stale, but it works because of the human element.
I hope the inifnity devs can pull a rabbit out of their hat and create something awesome.... until I start to see some hard evidence of a game, and not just some screenies and vids, I'll stick with eve :-)
but you bet your ass I'll be on infin like a fly on **** as soon as it starts to be a game, not a pipe dream. They need a publisher, they need servers (and space to store em), and they need more industry support. but to be sure, I'll keep an eye on it ----------------------------------------------- "Yes... I sleep with my myrmidon. It's nothing to be ashamed of!" |
