Which one would you prefer for pvp and why?
The interceptor with immense speed, or the frig. for the extra firpower?

AFs are just to slow. They like a faster cruiser with less flexibility. They have their moments but if I had a choice I would go with a ceptor like every time.

AF are wannabe cruisers. Get a ceptor... And, if you use minmatar ships especially, get a claw. That thing is a beast.

I'm a big interceptor person, but I think Assault Ships have an undeservedly bad reputation. There are things assault ships can do that interceptors can't. For one thing, sniping. I fly both. ------------------

Yeah, ceptors are still nice if you use them to kill dictors and frigs though. And not to mention insanely fun^^, Stabber=Win though I agree there too;p.

and about afs. afs dont utterly suck. for example an afterburning af is hard to hit, even for cruisers (not even mentioning an mwding jaguar). they are superb gank ships if flown in bigger squads and can take a beating. u can kill battleships in 5 man gangs and engage vs other gangs. u are absoluteley safe from interceptors since an af squad will pretty much one volley any closing ceptor due to the small sig radius of their guns or for those who use hawks due to missle storm of doom. if flown wiseley ( mainly not under 15-20km range from target) afs are pretty hard to counter. the only big problem are dedicated drone carriers with big dronebays which can replace drones quickly, i.e dominix and ishtar or medsized missle ships like the drake or cerberus. if u engage this kind of enemy u will have to either use ew to shut down the target or warp out and back in once u become primary. escaping in an af is easier than with cruisers and or bc. their lack of agility however is a drawback if measured by frigate standards.

Web and Neut would kill just about any small ship TBQH.
Still, I'd prefer the interceptor. ---

Edited by: Baron Fletcher on 03/08/2007 22:30:21 It depends what you want to do with it.
The interceptor fills the classic role of the frig in pvp- the tackler- much better. Its main defence is the ability to run away, plus being really hard to hit at high speed. If your in a situation where some starts hitting you though, you pop fast. Never, never get webbed.
The Assault Frig is in the general wisdom more of a PvE ship. It can take on up to level 3 missions, plus with care and patience rat even in 0.0. In pvp it struggles to find a role. You can fly it as an anti-support/anti-small target ship, but destroyers do the same at a fraction of the price (although with less survivability). It can be a dammage ship for small gangs, but again other ships that cost less can do as much dammage. Tech 2 ships cant be insured for anywere near their purchase price, and some people are put off by the amount of resources you have to expose to risk/vs the lack of clear benifits, compaired to other options. In a true fleet environment it lacks clear purpose. Most people see them as as a steping stone to Heavy Assault Cruisers/Command ships, or a fun ship for the frigate enthusiast.

The role of an interceptor is the same as an AF but its better. Anti Frig/Destroyer. Look at their bonuses and medslots. Not tacklers...imo.

I would say that they are indeed both, but they use totally diferent approaches.
however interceptors are the best tacklers there is, while AF's are probably the best frigate-sized anti-frigate platform there is (that is if you know what you're doing).
bottom point is, don't use the Afrig as a tackler. you will fail miserably. ---

I disagree with the anti-AF crowd at least from a Minmatar point of view.
The Jaguar with excellent speed, passive shield tank and interesting EWAR options and the Wolf with it's lovely DPS and passive armor tank are very solid ships to fly. The Jag is great in gangs (a bit low DPS wise for solo) and the Wolf provides nasty DPS and is very capable as a solo ship (see Drake Mezcal Wolf videos).
AF gangs mixed with intys are devastating. But you need to be a skilled pilot to get the most out of AF's. With the NOS balance coming they will get even better.
Inty's are a completely different ship. They are best used as intended-pointing up targets and staying alive until the heavies come in. Yeah....there are a couple of inty's worth flying solo...but not greatly so until again the NOS balance makes it worth flying something like a plate Claw (the plate Claw is a crappy option to the Wolf IMO...YMMV)
Both Inty's and AF's require excellent and varied skills to fly effectively. Target knowledge goes a long way as well .

The ishkur is also a beast of a ship ...not rigged it can take out a raven without nos easily ....and 90% cruisers and pirate drakes (those needed to fit tackling gear)
The ishkur is scary if you dont have the proper counter....and tbh if the ship isnt looking to counter your ishkur it will just die in most cases....
tbh though a cruiser will do much more damage...just dies faster....so pick your targets and check your wallet

I've flown with a AF pilot in my roaming Frigate gangs before. He helped tackle pretty well, and provided a lot of DPS. We used Rifters as tacklers, and took down a few ships that day. In a blob, might be good if you could sneak up on a SB or some other frigs, but other than that... I'd say it's fantastic in 5man ish gank squads, but in blob wars... I'd go with the ceptor.

There are some really bad setups out there... I run into the bad ones more often than the good ones. People often assume that everyone else fits a ship with the kind of study that they personally would use. Ishkur vs Raven is not that much of a stretch in the Iskur pilot is smart and the raven pilot is not. Not to mention that the Iskur will be able to run if things are going badly.

Having an idiot for an opponent always helps, but is not a good indication of relative ship worth. A stupidly fit, stupidly flown battleship goes down to a lot of things.
On the other hand, I do think that the crowd that totally writes off AFs is overstating their limitations. My main objection to AFs is cost vs. perfomance. A ship that can cost 20 mil and be insured for 2 is a heck of a risk for what AFs deliver.

I've flown a Jaguar quite a bit but I found its use rather limited, the role I performed could always be replaced in a better and/or cheaper way by either a stabber, destroyer or interceptor. And I never really liked the wolf personally, 2 med slots is just limiting.

Interceptors are good for holding down large targets - its there role.
Af's provide better fire in a gang - sdince you need a tackler than can take some fire. I've flown ceptors and AF's in 30+man gangs, ceptors pop in seconds. At least when im flying an af, i can take sniper fire long enough to announce im having to warp off.
Also a range bonus'd AF can give the range on a cruiser a run for its money.
P.s.
Try the cormorant with destroyers 5 - interceptors get alpha'd from 100km.
