You train the skills to be able to use Tech 2 modules because "theoretically" they are better than everything short of their faction and officer counter-parts. But what you end up with is a module that only matches the "Best Named" version in performance but requires more resources to run. Now for my cut to the point statement...
- SHOULDN'T IT BE THE OTHER WAY AROUND? -
If you think about it, being Tech 2 should mean that it is more efficient than the best named version and therefore requires less resources to fit and run. Take for example ECM Target Jammers... The best named version is the 'Hypnos'. If we take the 'Hypnos' Multispectral Jammers stats and compare them to the Tech 2 Multispectral Jammer, you will find that they have the same performance ability (jam strength, range, falloff etc.), but the fitting requirement and capacitor cost per cycle is greater on the Tech 2 than on the 'Hypnos'. Similar comparisons can be found in other module categories, where the best named and the tech 2 versions are equal in performance, but its harder to fit and run the tech 2.
Now, unless there is a hidden purpose for this that I am missing, I would imagine that most others would agree with me that this should be changed. My suggestion would be to just flip the stats between the "Best Named" version of the mod and its Tech 2 version.
That sound rational??? |

"If you think about it, being Tech 2 should mean that it is more efficient than the best named version"
Why? T2 isn't presented as the highest possible tech, and never has been... This is just your assumption. To give you a contrasting approach, T2 could simply represent hi-tech mass produced items, which naturally can be surpassed by high-tech, small run items.

Good point, I understand that. But what about the skill requirements to use T2 as apposed to Best Named? Wouldn't it make sense that you should get a greater benefit from the module that requires more skill than the one the requires the bare minimum?
I guess thats where my assumption, that T2 should mean better than best named, is coming from. |

Cause "best named" is often rare, where as T2 can be produced.

And the best named cost more than the t2 named in the cases where they are better. It all balances. Look at the cost of the named sensor dampeners that have slightly better fitting requirements than the tech II's...roughly 12 mil iirc while tech 2's only cost 2mil.

also if you look at t2 compared to best named t1 you do get extra bonuses that apply only to the t2 variant, guns get more damaged than the best named t1 and missles get a higher ROF for their t2 counterpart...also t2 is cheaper...although a bit harder to fit. then again get weapon upgrades and advanced weapon upgraded trained and they all become a whole lot easier to fit...

I agree completely with this too, there is allready an bigger topic on this subject however and it might help if all comments got added to that one instead so the issue is better visible. Nyphur made a very good list of most of the defunct / subpar T2 modules in here

I was about to post that link and just noticed you had already posted it. Thanks mate :).
Most modules follow the idea that T2 is better than best named but has higher fitting reqs. Some modules, however, break this idea and need fixed. Four have been fixed so far since I noticed the issue (cap injectors, remote reps, stasis webs and energy transfers) but several more are still broken such as energy neutralisers and nosferatu.
