Like many other people have said, if there was a CC required most people wouldn't even of tried the game to begin with. Myself included.

Edited by: NightmareX on 08/08/2007 09:44:17 Weeeeeeeell, it's kinda strange to see those few peoples here who says that i wouldn't try out a trial on EVE if you had to write in the credit card details, that's kinda funny, since in WoW, you HAVE to write in your credit card details before you can try out a trial on WoW.
And i don't think that was a problem for all of those millions who started to play WoW.

I would disagree with this
if the issue is macroers then introduce regular random disconnects for trial users and monitor reconnect attempts
if issue is isk selling spam then disallow website links for trial players and limit their trade channel access (2 messages / 10 mins + convos would be fine).

bad idea... kicking trial users off the system will only drive new players away because they will think the server is buggy...

Why should we relegate new players to the test server that can hardly support a hundred people in-system? EVE is a harsh world, but Jesus, trial accounts shouldn't be 3rd-class citizens! OK, first of all, Eve was built to draw a different crowd than WoW does. Second of all, many players in Eve do NOT have access to a credit card-- that is the reason Eve Time Codes exist. There are countries that do not have access to Visa and Mastercard, much less American Express or Discover, and whose local banking systems are not compliant with international standards of electronic banking standards. My first run through Eve, I had a gentleman in my corporation who was entirely reliant upon Eve Time Codes. He had money, but no way to get it from his bank to CCP other than through Time Codes.
Also, Credit Card validations cost money. The processor will charge a fee for every transaction, only part of which is dependent upon the amount of the transaction.
Next, as someone else already pointed out, CCP holding onto credit card numbers is a BAD thing. Although they have managed to put together better software than the state of Indiana, at least I know that my state's computers are a black hole where no information can ever be located . If hackers knew that CCP's credit card processor kept on file indefinitely CC numbers, they'd never get a minute's rest, and neither would we once someone got into their system. It happens all the time, much more often than people realize.
Remember, Blizzard is big enough that they can shut out those without credit cards. CCP from the beginning has included them. To deviate from that would lose CCP my business, because it would be a betrayal of a relatively large number of loyal players. I came back to Eve because CCP has demonstrated a sincere desire to do right by its community, even as they struggle with issues that far outstrip what they anticipated.

While on the surface a CC validation sounds good, its unworkable. there are too many programs that generate valid CC numbers.
i have 2 potential solutions. firstly, have an IGB window that pops up with one of those random string image things the first time a trial account connects to TQ. 3 incorrect inputs disables the account.
the second idea requires ISD creating a new division that specifically greets new players and helps them through the tutorial. any spammers that get passed the image verification are then banned by the greeters.
i also think rookie help should be nerfed. its utterly pointless. i remember not being able to get any help whatsoever in there, where as corp chat was more friendly and had more experienced players in there that were willing to help out.

you know there are countries who use other payment methods over credit cards - there is a reason why both Eve and WoW have a direct debit option too

If there was an easy fix for this it would of been found by the multitude of other MMO games out there. CCP have done one thing that will limit isk sellers, which is allow a valid way to get GTC by using isk. That created a base real world value and shrinking the potential profits.
Also isk selling has a much smaller effect in Eve than other MMO's because most everything can be destroyed unlike the others where once you have the best item that is it. Noob buys isk, noob buys shiney expensive ship with isk, noob gets owned by a skilled player in T1 fit.
Even if all isk sellers were auto banned from trials all that would happen is they would pick up GTCs and then get banned. I don't think the $15 is going to make or break them. Why are you still reading? Its over. Continue to the next post.

what? if theres a disclaimer on the trial site that says "YOUR CARD WILL NOT BE CHARGED, THIS IS FOR VERIFICATION PURPOSES ONLY" there wont be a problem.
Too many trial accounts are made because of the ease in which you can make them. Think about this fact as well: How much space is there being wasted on the server DB due to trial accounts that are still in the system. The devs need to do something about removing accounts that have let their trial expire without consideration fro renewal. Im sure theres a considerable amount of accounts that sit and collect dust on the DB. Delete the abandoned accounts, as well putting limits on new trial accounts.
Do this and we'll see a normalization of the server.

Unfortunately, It's extremely doubtful that the characters created from trial accounts contribute to lag. The only thing that might be affected would be the time it takes to get to the "Select Character" screen and the "Show Info" windows, but even then it would be a drop in the ocean compared to lag from other sources. Also, I do think that requiring a credit card would not help things at all as it's easy to fake a valid credit card number and requiring this would turn off many new players. WoW already does this and they still have a major problem with Gold Farmers. ------------ Whiners - Unite! Tarminic - 25 Million SP in Forum Warfare. |

When I made a WoW trial I never had to give my CC number, so that point makes no sense anyway.
I also like the idea where trial accounts can't post any website links but I would still prefer a word filter list of known isk seller sites.

Quite frankly, I trust Blizzard. If I ever decide to try out one of their games I'd be willing to hand over details to give it a go right from the start. They are a big name in gaming.
I don't hand out my CC to some random company overseas no one has ever heard of until I'm certain its a good idea.
Besides, WoW had a rabid following before it was more then a few glossy screen shots posted on game sites. People would have handed over their bank numbers and their firstborn to get to play.

By limiting the size of the wallet, it will make isk sellers life harder. I would think that those who buy isk for rl money, buy it in the billions. I assume it would be easier for CCP to monitor 10x 100mil transfers to/from a single character. They could even make it so that you cant transfer more than 20mil per 24hrs to trial accounts.
It wont solve the mail spam, but by reducing isk sellers numbers, spam amount will be reduced aswell.

This would work! Its harsh, but deserved. No person who is trying to test out this game would need to send more than 20 evemails a day, would need to use the trade channels (not really with contracts and market available), and will stop sellers from creating 6+ trial accounts in 24 hours on the same pc at work...
Afaik, Wow used to have something similar to OP... to create a trial account you needed to provide credit card details. (you would not be charged - just for verification). What is wrong with this option? Nothing.

As I stated in a previous thread, whatever CCP does needs to be PROactive, instead of REactive. Adding websites to a filter still means that some spam is going to get through before the filter is updated. We need to stop the spam PERIOD. One way I support is banning trial accounts from any non-moderated channel. Only channels with a constant CCP / ISD presence can be accessed by trial accounts. This also goes for evemails, where trial accounts are not permitted to send emails except to pre-authorized recipients.
Another idea is a filter that a user can set to block all chat / convo / evemail communications from trial accounts. It wouldn't restrict trial accounts at all, but it'd make life easier for those of us who have no need to speak with trial members. ----------------------------------- You will be assimilated...bunghole! |

I HAD to write in my credit card details when i tried WoW with a 10 days trial like 5-6 months ago.
