Yesterday's hardware deployment and database management software update has been completed. The installation consisted of the following:
A pair of IBM X Series 3950 M2 with 2 x 3.5Ghz dualcore XEON processors and 64 Gb RAM, A number of IBM Disk Array DS4800 with 64 Fiberchannel 15k rpm disks, An additional Texas Memory Systems RAMSAN 400D with 128 Gb of solid state memory, and Microsoft SQL to the Enterprise edition with Service Pack 2.
While issues did arise during the start-up process, the initial reports are showing an average of 20% less CPU utilization when compared against the old hardware.
Concerning the server restart soon after the hardware deployment, Microsoft is working closely with our IT team to finalized hardware and software settings for optimal performance. They were instrumental in determining the cause of the server failover and continue to assist with final fine tuning.

Woohoo! I'm ready to fly and waiting...
It was a little disconcerting having that remaining announcement here though, the one about stress-testing Singularity sometime yesterday evening. 0_o
Might be nice to have someone stationed on the PR front when things get a little extended like this, to drop an occasional note on the web.
Oh well, glad we're on the road to recovery. Congratulations.

I think it's real (64 Gigabytes and 128 Gigabytes) capacity of the systems. More Batteries guys! Show everybody how to fly =)

Edited by: Krytie on 09/08/2007 23:38:24 Edited by: Krytie on 09/08/2007 23:36:36 I think that a few above do not really realize the extent of the servers that they are dealing with. I think if I remember correctly, they are using 150 server cluster environment.
Check out the Computer Technology Review about the Eve gaming system. http://www.wwpi.com/casestudies/eveonline.htm (this was written in 2005 or so, so they have upgraded a lot since then I am sure, but this gives an idea what you are running on).
These are not your standard home or even office systems configurations that they are using. Some may complain, but remember that they are basically the leaders in the gaming industry. I would like to see WoW or other games go to a 1 world system. Keeping this many transaction happening all over the place with all of the functions that anyone can play with is remarkable.
I say great job guys. 20% saving of CPU usage for the system is a huge saving. It can only get faster..... =:-D

They could run Solaris X86 on the same hardware. Oracle 10, that'd be one smoking system. I bet you'd get 10x active users and zero downtime.

Does this mean CCP's using SQL Standard (64-bit)? If so can you reveal any details of how you chaps plan to use the extra features (Partitioned Views/Indexes etc) in Enterprise?

ps. for the love of god please can your chaps fix the cookie issues in the forums.

No, they didn't. The story at Tom's Hardware clearly says: "Texas Memory Systems will be able to solve that need in a few months with their upcoming RAMSAN-500 box that can hold up to 2 TB of Flash memory along with a maximum of 64 GB of DDR2 memory", and the story is dated yesterday, 10 August 2007, so this is not available yet. Also the RamSan 500 will mostly use flash memory and can only contain 64 GB of DDR memory.
We now have two 128 GB RamSan 400 units (all DDR) on TQ. TMS actually already offers 1 TB of DDR storage in the Tera-RamSan, which is basically a stack of up to 8 RamSan 400 units as far as I can tell.

Same happened to me. Worst bit is I don't even remember specifically which bpo's and there are no record of them ever being entered into research, so kinda hard to file a petition on that one :(

Anyone having problems with multiple clients not staying loggged in? Haven't played in a few days and now today I can't keep more than one client online for more than a few miutes at a time. Seems to boot a random client whenever someone appears in local or some database query is made or even when rats appear in the belt. And before someone says its sunday I'm in a backwater system that has never lagged on any day of the week.

These are much lower end than the DDRAM-based solution that you have but are still worth considering as an alternative to normal hard drives:
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/products/flash/Products_FlashSSD.html
In addition, they seem to be very rugged, which means you can freely whack the servers when you get frustrated with de-synch issues.

Can I whack the servers too? Everytime I tried to gang up the mining ops and convert it to a fleet to share the bonus it kicked half the gang to the desktop and even when we just mined without a gang some members would randomly drop out right as the strip miners cycled thier ore. Ah well. I know you guys are working hard on it and it will eventualy get squished with the other annoying bugs.

Is the front end application multithreaded? If it is have you ever considered using the Sun T2000 hardware?
