Originally by: Sheriff Jones Edited by: Sheriff Jones on 10/08/2007 11:51:56 the thing is, i use an arbitrator, with two drone links, giving me a healthy 85km range and i've run dozens and dozens times with it.
No problems.
Only thing they have done is stop attacking rats, 'cause those rats who haven't aggressed me/i haven't aggressed arn't on their "list". Which is how it should work.
I tend to control my drones more though(i think) then a usual pilot, meaning i give commands almost all the time.
They've always returned to the ship, always been really nice lil' fellas and i've got nothing to complain about them.
Even the interface, i find to be much better then to have them on hotkeys, since you couldn't very well have them as a "all attack" key, since then turrets should have that option too.
Right clicking twice is hardly "alot of work" for controlling drones. Especially taking into consideration the bonus sides of them.
I mean come on, they're the only weapon working while jammed, auto-attack targets and a good drone carrier can fit three different damage types.
Also taking into consideration the other sides, non jammable webbers, ecm, repair.
I think the drone "problems" are a bit over-sold andtaking into consideration the bonus sides of drones, they are hardly "broken".
If you satisfied with this ****** UI and bugged drones it doesn't mean everyone feels the same and it's not a problem at all.

Well i never said that, i said it's a bit over-sold, as in, it's not THAT bad as it's sold out to be.
Not every post, that is not "pro nerf/fix this!" is a "No you are wrong and there's nothing wrong!" post.
So yeah, i have a problem with being serious, but it's the almost smallest problem i have. |

I've seen alot of flaming when people say 'no problem with drones', and obviously people have serious problems. I use Drones and Fighters all the time. Now, I admit I might not have the same concerns as most about who they attack, but (Flame suit on) - I don't have problems with drones.
They do have rules, however, and that might be why people have problems.
1> If you launch drones before the rats have agro, the rats might shoot the drones. Any drone shot at without a locked and engaged target in its list will go after the rat that shot it. 2> If you lock and engage a target with drones, they will all kill that target first. Works every time for me. 3> Once the initial target is dead, they will randomly pick another agro target and engage. 4> If you pick a second target and order drones to engage, they will switch to the second target. However, they may have already agro'd another rat before you do the switch. Hence the setting off of multiple agro's. 5> Yes, they get stuck on each other from time to time. Try launching 14 of them from a carrier and you'll see it almost every time. 6> Yes, they occasinally will return to just outside scoop range and get stuck. I see this most often with mining drones who just popped a rock. Seems like they are queued to dock and so sit around. Approach and scoop them.
If you believe there to be other problems than the effects listed above, please describe the scenario. I like the fact that drones will pick other random targets after a kill. I wish my Fighters would do it - in large fleet battles its simply too laggy to properly order fighters around, and I'd rather they shot something than just hanging out after the first kill.
As a side note, launching drones at rats and going afk works really well.

Oh, I have an idea, maybe you could just, oh, I don't know, just not use drones if that's how you feel. There is no comandment that decrees that you use drones if you have drone space. Sure, my drones are a little quirky at times, but I just issue a new command and everything is copasetic.

how about when you've orderd drones to return to ship, and half of them just stay behind.. how about when they do arrive at your ship they just get stuck?.. riiigghhht, we must all be wrong! its just our imagination! the hundreds upon hundreds of posts from players over many years .. they are just all wrong? do you work for CCP by any chance?
sorry if im overly sarcastic, but if you've never had these problems then either your ignorant or you have just been extremly lucky! it is by far the single thing in eve which boils my blood more than anything, followed by people dis-beleive there is a problem.
Totally.
And drones attacking structures in encounters when there's ships shooting at you. Yeah sure blow up that fence or what not while I take care of these frigs. Flippin annoying. Bad code.

I'll gladly trade my drone space for some Med or Low slots. Oh and I feel like controlling my drones via kb.

As a side note, launching drones at rats and going afk works really well.
7> After a kill, when you order the drones to attack a target on the other side of your ship (lets say 90+ km travel) the drones are liable to "decide" to switch targets half way through and scatter. Not too terribly game breaking as you just repeat the engage command (or spam it) and everything is fine... but slightly annoying nonetheless.
As a rule I love the little buggers (and their independence is a boon when you're jammed) but there are times when little annoyances like that can cost you... I've lost a ship or two on those bugged missions (when entire room aggroes on you) and all of the sudden you're surrounded by a whole bunch of warp-jamming little frigs. When several seconds can mean your ship's destruction and a successful warp out, tight control over your drones is really important (not to mention that if you are surrounded by tightly orbitting mass of ships the drones freak out sometimes due to collision detection).
So to summarize:
* Yes I think the problems with drones are not game breaking and more of an annoyance most of the times. There are there however as many (most?) dedicated longrange drone pilots can attest to. * Yes I think that long standing bugs (annoyances) like this should be fixed after so long. Though in all honesty I'd rather they address fleet battles issue first * Yes I would love more customization w.r.t. keybindings and in particular the ability to control drones through the keyboard.

Either some people are extremely picky about the behavior of their drones, or there are issues with drones that exist with some people's installations of the Eve client that don't exist for others.
Because I've never had a problem beyond sometimes having to repeat an order once or twice and sometimes (somewhat rarely though) having to turn and move towards the drones to get them to to return to the drone bay. And to me, that's hardly much of a problem. ------------------

Believe me - and the other with that problem - we aren't picky. Watching drones go after the assigned target just to switch targets a km before reaching it to scatter out and pursue something else is just annoying if you notice it in time. If you don't well more often then not you have a dead drone and a room full of angy ships.
But I think you might have hit the spot. I'm not so sure anymore where the drone AI resides. It might be in the client. And then it might be vulnerable to all kinds of network problems. But that is not even an educated guess here.

Worst problems I ever had with Med drones was having to repeat the engage command 3 times just to be really sure the lil buggers actually listened. 2x quite fast, and then once more after a bit of a delay, or sometimes they'd decide to lounge 'round and turn of MWD while returning to drone bay near the ship.
That was it. Both liveable conditions.
However, since moving to heavy drones.. Ugh.. I've started seeing the dreaded split and scramble the drones will do while en route to a selected target. Mid way they'll just scatter to random targets and require yet another hit of engage target to send them back in the right direction. ---

Sadly people from CCP usually respond on topics like: "what color of icecream do you like? pink or blue?" then "Please fix the camera zoom bug" or something other important things. Didn't make 1st post to flame CCP for doing nothing, so please keep posts "I have no problems with drones" (if you don't have them - good) and "you should not use them noob if you don't like" away. __________________________________________________

I wouldn't say that what I've experienced using drones counts as being a real problem. ------------------

At first I thought drones were fine because ive never had problems before. Instead I went and tried it out and yes somethings messed up. Im a caldari pilot so I dont use drones much but this is probably the first time ive had a problem. The main problem I had was getting all of my drones to attack the same target. 4 went to the target I wanted while 1 went to a different target and no matter how many times I clicked engage target, it wouldnt. So I dont know this is a new issue for me

Originally by: Moridin920 Unless you can look at all the code that makes EVE, I'd say there is absolutely no basis on saying how hard adding something in is.
The problem is they have to make sure that code fits in with everything else. Sure, it might just be one small function to add on that stuff calls on. It might be a nightmare to add it and they are working on it right now, because the simplest code add sometimes makes the whole program quirky.
BS. Utter BS. CCP has (I hope) competent programmers. They haven't fixed the drones problems because they don't know/care about it. The programming time is being given to new content instead of old bugs.
One of the devs (Sharkbait I think) posted in a related thread that he didn't even really look at those mega threads that have been up for ages. Instead, he expected a clear, concise bullet-point presentation (his words) stating our concerns. Yes, that's right, a 20 month old thread showing widespread problems affecting a large percentage of the player base is ignored by the people the thread was aimed at. oh, and then's the poor Amarr (poor buggers). Same story for them.
This indicates a major disconnect on CCP's part. Sad.
Instead, they spend their programming time on things like Sov or Heat. Yay for us, right?
They will never fix drones. Just train for something else, m8. I've given up waiting and I suggest you do, too. __________________________________________________ FOLD. The Ultimate PVP. It really is Us vs. Them. clicky |
