Mimmatar Brutor 1.5 sp so far.
My question is this, "How in zues' butthole" does one choose a ship to play. There are so many out there I have no clue what to get and stick with.
I currently am in a cruiser, arty setup. I'm on level 1's going to level 2's. I like mission running, but I think as I get a better grip on this game and hone my skills I would like to pvp. But not until I hit at least level 4's where I have more experience under my belt, so I would be mission running till then.
I want to dish out massive dmg but on the same hand be viable in a fleet if the occasion arises. ( I know this can be achieved by simply switching gear)I also understand my race is a shield tanking race, how does that figure into my desired play style?
But I am a little overwhelmed with all the ship choices I can work towards.
Should I be going for a battle cruiser or battleship if I want to do high dps? If so which ship
If not, suggest something, I'm just kinda lost atm.
Thanks in advance for all your help, much appreciated.

Edited by: Acinonyx Jubatus on 12/08/2007 08:11:10 It's all basically summed up in...
"what type of playstyle/performance you want" pretty much.
Since you're in cruisers you've mentioned, you can just sit in those if you truely like them as they're fairly cheap for fairly good performance.
Rupture and Stabber are the combative cruisers, but both have varied performance as one's fast and the other can take more of a direct beating.*
Anyways, you've asked about battlecruisers and battleships.
I'd suggest you go for battlecruisers first if you really must choose between those two. Battlecruiser is easier to get into, cheaper, and can run on the same skills of the cruiser. They'll also have more mobility and tracking than BS, but BS will obviously have more range/dps/tank... but that comes at more of a cost.
So I'd say, if you're wanting bigger right away, I'd settle on BC first over the BS while you get your skills sorted. But cruisers aren't that bad either...
* That's only counting the minmtar T1 cruisers, not the other races nor T2/faction variations.

with a BC, you also have a t2 path to go once when you ahve enough skillpoints. BS is probably easier to get into compared to command ships (t2 BC), but a command ship is a lot more fun, at least with my experience. (t1 BC over BS) simply due to mobility and t2 ships are a lot stronger compared to most t1. i think a command ship could fairly easily take down a BS with the right strategy.

first ask your self what you want.. do you want to be shooting stuff. or do you liek building stuff? do you like mining stuff?
Anyway when you like to shoot stuf look up ship setups .. so get your self a ship and see what a good setup is from the experience of other players.
pve and pvp are 2 different worlds..
anyway there are some sticky`s in this topic where you can find the ship setups..

Also...
I was currently looking at the hurricane But I am yet again bewildered, there was a index ship guide I was looking at but I am not quite sure as where to lean on ship setup as well. Long Range Sniper or, the slow bus tank with auto cannons. What's usually better for missions? (I'm used to arty now with my cruiser, but again need some more veteran experience.
also this T1 talk I understand but how does one advance to t2 ships of the same class(i.e. type, like battleships or a command ship)
And one last question.. when I get to choosing a Battleship and from what I understand I'll probably be sticking there, which of my races ships would last me the longest and do the most justice in high dps.(granted setup and skill points will vary)

Edited by: Robke on 12/08/2007 11:37:22 Hello there,
Im not sure what you mean with the first question. In my opinion, battleships work better in lvl4s than battlecruisers. This is because battlecruisers are really just big cruisers. They use the same modules as cruisers and the same skills. In missions in general, artillery is better because the range advantage allows you to stay out of range of the npcs and do damage while you would be getting in range (if you'd have ac).
If you look at market browser you can see command ships. These are tech2 battlecruisers. To get in them is a bit skill intensive and I wouldn't recommend it unless you are sure you really like bc over bs. You will need racial cruiser 5 and battlecruiser5 just to get in one.
You say minmatar is a shield tanking race, but to be honest, a lot of their ships are more effective using armor tanks (imo).
Shieldtanked minmatar ships you could be looking to use are stabber, cyclone and maelstrom. Armortanked minmatar ships you could be looking to use are rupture, hurricane, tempest.
However, lastly I would like to say, do not feel 'locked' up in your race. You are minmatar, but that does not mean you can not go into gallente ships for example. I am caldari myself, but have only flown minmatar and gallente. If you see for example the myrmidon (drone using bc) and like it, don't think well i'd never be able to get in that, because it just needs gallente cruiser 4 which is only a couple of days. Furthermore many of the skills will work for other races ships as well.
Hope this helped.

It's always tricky starting a new mmorpg not knowing what path to take. Remeber tho this is not like any wow clone out there. you don't choose any 'starting profession' and then get stuck with a small selection of skills and paths to take. You can choose to train towards anything and any ship at any point in the game.
if you are going minmatar then u are the race of speed and skills. owing some of the fastest most nimble ships in game that excel in hit and run type pvp. They generally aren't the highest dps race but they are very versatile. most minnie ships can be shield or armor tanked. generally armor tanks are better for pvp becuase u can fit ur mid slots with tackling gear and ewar to pin down ur target. for pve and some times pvp u can fit a good shield tank and then fill ur lows with 3 dmg mods for much better dps and also a few other slots for tracking mods and further shield tank.
Minmatar, minnie, matar whatever u wanna call it is a pretty solid choice for combat tbh. gallente would also do you well, amarr do ok in many ships, caldari for serious pve and support/team pvp. all are good but different strengths.

I'd say you're on the right path if you want to PVP. Minmatar are an awesome PVP race with some of the best ships in the game. My advise would be to get trained up in the smaller ships for PVP first then progress onwards. Sure you might want to train battleships for missions but leave them at home for PVPing until you have a much higher skill count as you'll be much less effective and will loose ships too easily. At 1.5M SP you probably don't want to go outside cruisers just now but aim for BC since the recently released battlecruisers are very good, far more so than the old ones. Also small ships like interceptors and interdictors are very fun too, the Sabre is head and tails the best interdictor dealing damage greater than a cruiser but with the agility of an interceptor and the survivability of an assault frigate. It is welcome in ANY PVP gang in 0.0. Be warned though the skill path to interdictors is quite long perhaps 3 months until you can fully T2 fit one but on the bright side it requires the interceptors skills first so you quickly get a fun T2 ship to fly.

I thank you all for the valued information. I've learned alot,
What I really want in the end is to warp in, with a big beast of a ship, and eat cornflakes out of the enemy's skull in a matter of minutes.
So I'm guessing work on getting to t2 BS's then eh? as for now continue my skills while in my cruiser and make a slight jump up to a BC.
