It's a memory leak. My FPS in space is generally around 50 when I first undock, but over time it drops to around 20. -Wrayeth n00b Extraordinaire

Edited by: Hypo Psycho on 12/08/2007 20:58:16 so its a memory leak? i was under the assumption that these happened over a long period of time mine seems to go from 70 to 25 in around a minute is there anything i can do on my side to help this or is it a server side thing? ----------------------------------------------- "see you on the other side"

It sounds like an issue they had when Revelations 2 first came out, but I was under the impression that it had been fixed awhile back. Has it occurred to you that it may just be alot easier to render a station than a space environment and it's just normal performance? Also, have you checked the amount of memory EVE consumes over the course of traveling in space for a few minutes? That may shed light as to whether it's a memory leak or not. ------------ Whiners - Unite! Tarminic - 25 Million SP in Forum Warfare. |

ok on further checking it is not a memory leak using the in game FPS checker and the taskmanager i can see the FPS drop rapidly and the mem usage does not change with EvE running its around the 15 FPS mark now so its getting worse im putting it down to general EvE lag now ----------------------------------------------- "see you on the other side"

FPS is the number of times per second your display is redrawn, it has nothing to do with connection performance, methinks.
What about video memory?

ok the problem has come back to haunt me a gain i have no hardware probs or software probs and have narrowed it finally down to a "weekend" thing
i can play during the week with no problems but during the weekend the lag becomes unbearable
oh well looks like i am simply gonna have to put up with it ----------------------------------------------- "see you on the other side"

it a memory leak that happens so infrequently and in odd enough circumstances that CCP has trouble even replicating it frequently enough to bughunt-and-squash it.
Its been around as long as EVE existed, so meh. -

Edited by: Kw4h on 18/08/2007 19:21:51 Did you check if CPU usage increased? I heard other stories of EVE having a good performance when you just alt-tab to it, but the moment your mouse moves over the EVE window the framerate drops.
I'll investigate myself to see if I have the same problem.
edit: Started off with 152 FPS, and it slowly dropped to 148 during the minute. Not that much of a big deal but still, I didn't move anything on my pc at all. _ Planet Sight Wallpaper - EvE map |

Edited by: Sleepkevert on 18/08/2007 21:20:55 Edited by: Sleepkevert on 18/08/2007 21:19:57 Ok, i'm going to help out a little here. First (to have it mentioned) Scan your pc for viruses and other stuff you don't want running on your pc. (avg is nice and free, spybot S&D is also good for spyware. Hitman also seems to work nice, but i don't have any experience with it, and i dunno if it's free..) Check if you have the latest drivers for your video cart / motherboard. (Video drivers here.)
If that all turns out correct (I actually think you already have done this). Just delete the cache from eve, that fixed a lot of old weird problems in the past. If that doesn't work either, try and bug report / petition it with a list of what you have done already. And ask them if they know any other things to try. From 70 to 15 FPS in a few days is strange, and unacceptable imho.
(oh, and this has nothing to do with your network connection. FPS is purely local performance.)

Edited by: Hypo Psycho on 18/08/2007 22:16:59 yep done all the above i even installed a new client after removing the old one you say its a local problem and yet i have tried the PC on another Internet connection with no problems and it isnt even my Internet connection thats at fault as i have spent the last 4 hrs playing CS and BF2 without fault or lag FPS is related to network connections. ever played a first person shooter on a high ping? can you say slideshow? like i said it seems to be a connection between ME and EvE it really ****es me off when people reply with its a "PC problem" when from my end it clearly isnt ----------------------------------------------- "see you on the other side"

Try playing a third-person game where mouselooking doesn't directly affect the character's angle and position.

Slideshow, yes. (it doesn't get any movement stuff for a few seconds, so stutters, but you can still look around freely) FPS lag? No, definately not. Are you sure you are talking about FPS and not PING?
Anyway, have you specificly deleted the cache? It isn't cleared when reinstalling eve.
Cache is located on XP in the folder: C:\Documents and Settings\(USERNAME GOES HERE)\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE
It's a hidden/system folder so you might want to copy past that one. And delete the cache folder in there.

They're correct, FPS has nothing to do with network connection. FPS and lag are 2 entirely different entities, although in games that were built around the single computer, and then the other computers are added on lag can cause FPS issues. This is mainly the computer waiting for a response from server and will be done with stuff in real time "to avoid people jumping around all crazy in FPSes".
However MMOs, and games that are lock & activate are more client oriented. EVE is capable of running without connection for a short period of time "reason for Desync issues". And ping issues instead results in modules taking forever to activate "what happens in MAJOR fleet battles". ___________

ive got to the point now that it is simply costing me too much money the PC has been checked over by a PC technician twice and is going for a third tomorrow the technician also plays EvE so he knows what to expect and is not going in blind he has told me that the PC is not the problem i have been to the cache file that you stated the location of and deleted the "Machonet" folder there which is the usual culprit (done this 3 days ago) do i need to remove the cache folder in its entirety???
i have got past the point of upset and my game time has come to a complete standstill because of this
the "suggestions" i recieve are muchly appreciated but they simply dont work i apologize for my last reply but like i said i am really annoyed at this persistent problem that has now lasted for about a week and a half (in that time i did have maybe 2 days that it was ok) i am currently paying for 3 accounts and not being able to play i have got to my breaking point and just cant take any more

Pentium4 CPU 3.20 GHz
What class?
It's funny no-one's suggested tinkering with the CPU, since this is a mostly CPU render controlled game (UI).
Go into your bios, disable HyperThreading (it shouldn't be enabled, and if it is, EVE can't make use of it anyway - turn that off).
Then, make sure you close as much as possible down, and make sure you close ANY overlay programs, such as XFire and Steam. XP, DX9, and shadows don't get along well - so disable any window shadows you have. This can be done by right clicking My Computer, going to properties, advanced tab, then the first Settings button. Untick:
Show shadows under menus Show shadows under mouse pointer
Click ok.
This should rule out quite a few things.
I'd also go through task manager and remove anything you don't want running. EVE is VERY CPU dependant, anything that takes away CPU usage from it will reduce it's preformance more than you realise. ---

well im up for trying anything now so after reading Grez' post i thought what the hell i turned off the Hyper threading thingy along with shadows and Steam and i have to i am shocked that it worked (gonna contact the technician and tell him hes an ass hat) it seems fine atm but i will continue to monitor the PC
is there any reason that it would happen now when nothing on the PC has changed? is it related to a CPU problem? ie temperature? CPU leak? etc
i am very thankful to all for the help
im gonna cross my fingers and hope that i will be fine
Hypo - one happy man (until it goes wrong again)
P.S. norton is a crap program and dont use it, downloaded AVG anti-spyware and it found a virus which it deleted immediately (norton couldnt find it) doing this did not sort out the prob

ok that didnt last long lol problem is back again i checked CPU usage of EvE and it was sitting at around 99 with hyper threading disabled after being told to turn it back on CPU sits at around 70 (from the windows task manager screen) the cache folder was completely removed anti virus and anti spyware has been run on the PC again and still the same problem reconfigured the router to allow EvE a straight route to my PC and also pinged the TQ server which was fine (which was my first thought)
im suffering a leak somewhere but i just cant pin it down FPS is just dropping ----------------------------------------------- "see you on the other side"

By any chance, do you have anything called "Cool 'n' Quiet", or something like that? CPU Throttling?
This slows down the CPU when it gets too hot, or isn't in use. You might want to disable that. ---

Grez is correct here. These throttling programs are not even necessary anymore. P4 and up (not sure about the AMD CPU's) automatically do this. It is a protective feature they added at the start of the P4 line.

I'm having very similar problems.
Pentium4 CPU 3.20 GHz 3.19 GHz 2 GB Ram NVidia 7800 GTX
I seem to hover at 40 fps in station, undocked I managed to reach 10fps if I'm lucky.
So far I've done a Virus scan, cleared the cache, reinstalled eve, updated all my drivers, done the shadows thing, turned HyperThreading off, Spyware scan, followed all the tips in the FPS thread, tried sound on and off and now slammed my head repeatedly into the desk.
Didnt have any issues back when I was playing 5 months ago, now the game is literally unplayable and I cant work out why.
Sorry to be a pain, but any more suggestions?

If there is I cant figure out what it is, it does seem to be a CPU or GPU problem but I just cant figure out where its coming from.
