Hey,
I read about the long awaited upgrades to the graphics engine. Sounds really cool. Though, I am rather concerned as to if older cards (namely my ancient FX 5200) are all going to work with the new graphics engine.
I didn't see anything one way or the other on the blog, and I'm hoping that it'll still work. Though, in all honesty I know I need a new one "soon" anyway.
Thoughts? News? Something?
Thanks, Caia

Well, I've got a Dell 4600, and laughably the Nvidia is right up there in cards that I CAN use. At least without getting a new power supply.
Yes, I realize the FX 5200 is a pretty bad card (though, it plays everything I've thrown at it fairly well. Except for Oblivion, but nothing plays that well it seems. :( )
I suppose it doesn't matter much as I'm hoping to get a new computer by the time the new graphics engine is released. Along with a decent card.

Hey all, thanks for the replies.
FX5200 most certainly doesn't support the 3.0 shaders. In fact, it does a terrible job on the 2.0 version. I managed to get Oblivion (the sequel to Morrowind) working by turning off ALL the shaders. It worked, it looked terrible, but I could play.
I realized the FX5200 was out of date when I got it, but I got it for the sole reason of playing FFXI, which ran wonderfully on it. It wasn't until I got into other games that I started running into issues.
With everything I read on the entire FX series, they were a bust. They didn't do what NVidia said they were going to do. Now, they do work on most older games, and work decently at that. I've had no complaints with mine even playing EVE.
And I need a new computer anyway. This one is old and I'm getting clicking on the hard drive. You know, the impending clicks of doom before the hard drive stops working. :) It isn't that much a stretch to get a whole new box at this point (and a whole new video card).
Anyway, thanks for all the replies.

To the above poster: Have you tried Oblivion? That seems to chew up most systems and video cards. For a while, there were no systems out there that could play it to its full potential. Or very very few anyway. (Of course, that's changed a bit since then from what I understand. Bethseda optimized a number of things and made a "very low" graphics setting.) Great game too, should you ever find the time away from EVE. ;)
From everything I read about EVE, its actually amazingly lenient on processor speed and video cards (go CCP!). If hat I gather from this thread is true, it seems it will stay that way, more or less. Kodos to CCP for being able to do that. A LOT of other companies force upgrades if you want to continue playing.

Quote: no offense, but why do people with crappy gfx cards want to know if their old cards will run a new graphically intense game. I cant imagine that even if it DOES run the game after the new gfx upgrades that youd be happy. I mean when i had my 5600 all i could do was look at my screen and say "omg i need antialiasing!!!"...
Because its a sensible thing to ask. If it doesn't run, then I need a new card (or quit Eve). If it does run, then I don't need to update. If-then-else, gotta love being reasonable.
I don't play games for eye candy. I want content, not super cool OMG graphics that grind games down to 1 FPS. I rarely play any games with all the eye candy turned on, even those that I can.
