I currently use an Osprey with an expanded cargo to 1000m3
It uses 3xminer II's
I was looking at the Thorax but it's base cargo is 265m3, how far can that be pushed ?
The Exequror looks good with 600m3 and 4 turret slots.
Any other ships that could do a better mining job than my Osprey ? -----------------------------------------------

There's no better cruiser then the Osprey as far as m3/minute goes (thx to it's bonus it mines as though having 6 miner II's at cruiser V).

no and never think of useing a beutiful PvP ship like the thorax for mineing. if you are going the route of the miner it's best to train up to use mineing barges as all of them apart from the most basic barge absoultly pwn the osprey.

Hehehe, I like the look of the Thorax so might cross train anyway to use it for PVP.
No I'm not really into mining, just want to maximise a cheap ship for when I'm bored of mission running/exploration.

The Vexor, with good drone skills, is a pretty darn good ship for mining. It can fit 4 Miner II's and the 5 Mining Drones will pull you in a fair amount of ore. It takes a lot of drone skills to do it, but you can beat out the Osprey in terms of m3/minute, but not without serious drawbacks (the small cargohold becomes inconvenient). --- Wherever you go, there you are.

Good point, the Osprey has only 5m3 base cargo than the Vexor so probably still could get it up to 1000m3. But is 4xminer II's better than 3xMiner II's + bonuses from Osprey. -----------------------------------------------

No, but 4x Miner II + 5x Mining drones is fairly equivalent.

Edited by: pandymen on 14/08/2007 21:12:38 Sorry, but the vexor doesn't quite come close to the osprey. Anyone who's used mining drones know how much they can suck. You can't really jetcan mine well in one without dragging your can behind you with a tractor (because drones go to and from the roid with each cycle...slowly...).
And whats all this worry about cargo space? For an osprey, you fit 3xminer II, 2xmining upgrades, and a cpu upgrade. That's the best possible output. You don't need any extra cargo space. You just cycle your miners so that they fill your hold at different times and you can toss it in the can before it fills up with all 3. Don't waste your low slots with cargo expanders.
And you probably won't have enough cpu for anything extra besides the miner II's and the mining upgrades. And considering the vexor has even less cpu than the osprey, and my cpu is totally maxed out on my osprey, the vexor can't possibly hope to get the output of the osprey (equivalent of 6 miner II's and 2x mining laser upgrades, best the vexor can fit is 4x miner II and 1 or 2x mining laser upgrade..think its just 1x).
So that basically means that the drone bonus is negated if you try to get the mining laser output of the vexor anywhere near that of the osprey because you wont be able to fit a tractor beam. Without a tractor beam to constantly move closer to new roids...mining drones are virtually useless.

The osprey is a superior mining vessel (for a cruiser) with even mediocre cruiser skills you can get mining 360m3/minute and with t2 expanded cargoholds it can have a crago space of 1000m3.

Couldn't you mine into a can and return with a hauler and get the mined ore?

Thats what I do at present.
Use the Osprey to mine 1000m3 and drop it into can, rinse and repeat with both giant secure cans.
Return with a badger with 7000m3 and fill it up.
This is just a sideline to what I want to do but I like it to be efficient and cost/time effective. -----------------------------------------------

Currently I just jettison my ore and have a friend in my gang load it up. Is this what you mean or is there some form specific canister that can be used?

That is called jetcan mining and is very effective and popular. Only problem is ore thieves, but with a bit of paranoia, you can mine more efficiently than just carrying it back each time. However, one thing with mining-sometimes if all your lasers cycle at once, they mine more than your cargohold, leading to waste, which is why you still need good cargo bays.
Anyways, if you want a good mining ship w/out much skills, either go Osprey or some battleship with 8 turret slots (Rokh, Hyperion, Maelstrom, Abaddon, Apocalypse).
Jetcan = jettisoned can, so poster before me is correct. ------------------------------ One more soldier off to war... And one Velator in my hangars. |

Just trigger them 20 seconds apart ; that gives you plenty of time to drag & drop into a Jetcan.
The lower slots are best used with 2x Mining Upgrade + 1x CPU upgrade. (Second mining upgrade will only fit if you have good skills and basically remove every medium slot item).
Mining upgrade gives 5% extra yield, which is nice. Training Caldari Cruiser to 4 will give you 4x 20% extra mining yield, with the Osprey which is VERY nice.
My Osprey has:
3x Miner II 1x Asteroid Scanner 2x Mining Upgrade / 1x CPU upgrade
You rely on your drones for protection though with this setup.
If you drop one Mining Upgrade you have plenty of CPU to fit a decent tank (~3000-4000 shields) and an Assault missile launcher for picking off rats; and a couple of mining drones for that LITTLE bit extra.
The dragging & dropping becomes tedious though, I currently fly a Retriever; it has 2000m3 of space, strip miners and only needs to be emptied every 3 minutes.

I've not done it but I assume jetcan mining is where you mine some ore, jettison the ore, open up the can and mine as much as you want to put in it, problem you will need a hauler or something to bring it back to empty it. Secondly the can is not secure so when you leave it, it can be robbed.
Giant secure cans are different, they only take 3900m3 of materials but can be anchored into place and a password set on them so no one can steal your stuff, this means you can go away and come back when you like. I have 2 cans, fill them up and then come back in a badger with 7000m3, fill it up and take to station.
One thing i'm not sure on, can you blow up secure cans ? -----------------------------------------------

Not true, at full skill you need a Covetor to outmine a osprey, or a hulk. Teh Retriever advantage is the larger cargo space and the miners range.

The trick is that after jettisoning the can you can open it and continue to add mineral in it, whitout the need to wait for a new can to be ready.
As pointed out the weakness is that it is vulmerable to ore thiewes and a good range of tricks, so it is best done in not busy systems, when mining in group with a dedicated hauler (leave 1 ammo in the can or a bookmark and it will last 2 hours while being filled/emptied) or in some mission where there is plenty of good ore in large asteroid (better than those usually found in high sec).

But how many industrialist are going to train Cruiser 5 before going on to barges? For most people a retriever is a step up in m3/sec. Your typical miner isn't going to burn 4 weeks on cruiser V just to then head on to barges.
Now, if you do other things in Caldari cruisers, and just happen to mine some also, the Cruiser V Osprey may be more of an option. In either case its a great ship untill you can fly that high end barge.

While they aren't likely to train Cruiser V, Cruiser IV is quite reasonable, and it still provides the equivelant of 5.4 Miner II's. Still almost 10% better than a Thorax.
Even with Cruiser at level 3, a 5 laser Thorax only gets ~4% better yield than the Osprey. You can make up for that with a Mining Laser Upgrade, as you won't be as tight for fitting with CPU on the Osprey.
Osprey is still the best option for a mining cruiser. Its only real competitor is the Scythe, as it has the same bonus to mining yield. However, the Scythe has notably less CPU so you will struggle to fit as many mining upgrades.

Edited by: Simon Jax on 16/08/2007 18:10:50 4x Miner II's and an MLU along with Mining Drone II's and high drone skills and you will be very much on par with the Osprey in terms of mining yield. Mining Drone II's are much faster than their T1 counterparts and as long as you set yourself up near plenty of 'roids you'll be just fine for a good long time. Off hand, if I fit a thrid CoProc II instead of a Cargohold Expander I can also fit a Tractor Beam ... albeit not much else.
My personal Vexor setup pulls in 86.94 m3 per laser and 87.50 m3 per drone. 86.94 x 4 + 87.5 x 5 = 785 m3
In an Osprey, at the same cruiser level (IV), I'd get 163.29 m3 per laser and 62.50 m3 per drone (same drone skills). 163.29 x 3 + 62.5 x 4 = 740 m3
However, in the Vexor I'll also have 5x Medium Drones or 10x Light Drones available for defense. So you see why I'm not quite sure where you get off thinking that the Osprey is so superior to the Vexor.
Off hand, it's also kinda nice that other than the Mining Drone skill itself all of the skills used to boost the mining drone yield also apply directly to combat.
edit - And mining in a Thorax makes President Fortian cry ...

Edited by: L0st S0ul on 17/08/2007 10:23:02 Well just as I was bored last night I took Osprey out for a test.
1x standard missile launcher for rats 3x miner II's
1000m3 cargo
2 giant secure cans to fill
It took 30mins to fill both containers, return to station, come back in a badger with 7000m3, fill up, fly back, refine and sell ore.
so far 30mins = around 1,000,000isk
missions running in my drake takes 1hr including salvaging.
salvage = around 1,500,000isk total mission profit = 2-3mil isk
So as you can see, mining is not as profitable at the moment but mission running is so boring after a few missions.
I don't want to waste too mmuch time in skill training mining as I want to fly a Drake effectively before moving onto the Raven.
As a sideline, I am also training exploration as I hear that can be profitable too. -----------------------------------------------
