Great read, reminds me of my first month of play
Fresh out of trial I made my first millions hauling NPC goods, I had already removed the low-sec warnings, they are simply too annoying, and anyone who has flown a hauler prefer as few jumps as possible, "prefer shorter" and "prefer safer" autopilot settings does indeed work as advertised I had fitted TWO warp core stabilizers just to be on the safe side
I needed to move to a new region, because the NPC market was exhausted, so I stuffed EVERYTHING I owned in my uninsured, untanked T1 hauler, that included my mission running frigate and even the signed graduation papers from the tutorial mission, only 7 jumps to a new region .....
I woke up after a 3+ man gatecamp by my clone in a noob ship well, no, this is not WoW actually this is my number 1 reason to like EVE, "Death can actually cost you something", most single playergames is just reload, most MMOs it is just a slight annoyance, you have to do a corpse run or some such, most other MMOs a death means only a few minutes wasted, then you are back in business. Consider EVE a MMO in Ironman mode, here you have to plan a bit ahead.
Did I learn anything: not really, only lost 30 mill or so all in all
I had my noob ship and almost two million in cash, joined a player corp and moved my base of operations to a new part of space, after a week of goofing around with both mission running and mining, the hauling called to me again, the money is indeed really great considering the very low skill point requirement, gives you something to do for the month+ training learning skills.
Being more careful now I fitted three warp core stabilizers, and all the tank I could muster, I had learned the value of giant secure crates, which helped make up for the lack of cargo space. Millions soon came flowing again, I wanted at least 100 of them before investing in new implants, and was doing really great, even evading several small gatecamps in the process. Some of the camps even resorted to whining in local
That dream ended in a 7+ man camp, and of course they had to catch me with a hold full of goods, that gank cost me another 50 mill or so. This time I did a reassessment of the risk/reward of hauling NPC goods in lowsec, probably below optimal, even for rookie pilots
Rule #1 Dont undock what you cant afford to loose
Obey that and you are well on your way to live here, actually I am grateful I learned that in the very beginning, some are not as fortunate, and end up learning it when they haul several billions worth of goods to Jita in a freighter, or merrily running low sec missions in a faction fitted CNR.
And welcome to EVE by the way
